Pinnalt peegeldumisel valgus polariseerub. Polariseerumise määr sõltub suuresti valguse peegeldumisnurgast, mis sõltub materjali pinnaomadustest. Peegelduva valguse maksimaalne polarisatsioon toimub veepinna puhul 37, klaasi puhul 32 kraadise nurga all. Polarisatsioonifiltrit kasutatakse just selleks, millise nurga all polariseerunud kiired sisenevad kaamera objektiivi.
