How do political parties integrate propaganda into ordinary citizens' lives? After coming into power in 1948, the communist Hungarian Workers' Party (MDP) drew on tried-and-true Soviet methods of political outreach, mobilizing a network of agitators to circulate communist ideology and report their observations back to party leadership. These agitators produced maps, searched homes, and taught "petty bourgeois" self-criticism and "party-conform" love and hate. Making the Hungarian Communist studies communist propaganda through the everyday actions of these rank-and-file agitators, offering a nuanced portrait of mass mobilization. Through extensive archival research and personal interviews, Heléna Huhák traces the formation of the agitators' network, the training they received, and the often-gendered language they used to connect communist ideology to people's lived experiences. As the dialogue between the state and ordinary citizens developed through these interactions, the boundaries between political issues and private family life began to blur for both citizens and agitators: far from the state's initial vision of one-way political influence, homes also became a space for advocacy, complaint, and bargaining. Chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) is used in microelectronics industry to planarize and pattern metal and dielectric layers. Decrease in the sizes of the devices and introduction of new materials necessitate improved control of the CMP that can be achieved by studying the slurry chemical and particulate properties. In this study, the impacts of slurry particle size distribution and stability on pad-particle-surface interactions are investigated. Impacts of hard and soft (transient) agglomerates on polishing performance are quantified. To stabilize slurries, repulsive force barriers provided by the self-assembled surfactant structures at the solid/liquid interface are utilized. A major finding of this work is that slurry stabilization has to be achieved by controlling not only the particle-particle interactions, but also the pad- particle-substrate interactions. Effective slurry formulations are developed by studying the frictional forces representative of particle- substrate interactions, while achieving stability by introducing adequate interparticle repulsion. Optimal slurry properties are examined and a slurry design criterion is developed.

The art of painting on bark was once widely found in many parts of the Pacific, including the Sepik River region of Papua New Guinea, the home of the Kwoma people who are the subject of this study. The styles of the paintings and the subjects of designs were as varied as the hundreds of languages spoken in this region.Following European contact at the end of the nineteenth century, and the social change this brought, many New Guinea peoples discontinued producing their vibrant designs on bark. But in some areas the art form still flourishes. This book gives a detailed account of the art of painting on bark among the Kwoma, a people speaking a distinct language who display their barks on the ceilings of their ceremonial men's houses. The book includes accounts of the work of a number of individual artists all of whom are represented by paintings in one or more major art museums internationally.This second edition has a new chapter illustrating thirty-three large-format Kwoma paintings on paper commissioned by the author in the course of his fieldwork in the Sepik. All thirty-three works on paper, along with forty-two of the barks illustrated, now form part of the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne (Australia). This is an Open access book which examines learning-based innovation (LBI) in working life. It presents innovation as a continuous process embedded in the everyday practices of organizations, shaped by the competence, learning, and participation of employees, and made visible through diverse projects, outcomes, and value creation. The book offers four learning-based perspectives on innovation activities, focusing on innovation actors and the roles they construct, the nature of the competence and learning practices required for innovation, LBI projects and their multifaceted value creation, as well as the challenges of innovation and workplace pedagogical approaches to addressing them. The work is based on the EDLI Employee-Driven Learning and Innovation research project (20222025), drawing on empirical data from two Finnish organizations: the police and a technology-sector organization. The book makes a scientific contribution to research on workplace learning and (employee-driven) innovation, offering rich empirical examples and new theoretical insights for researchers and students.
