WW Norton & Co Frederick Law Olmsted: Essential Texts

GTIN: 9780393733105
An Anthology Of The Key Writings of the best known and arguably most prolific landscape architect in United States history, this book provides an ideal introduction to Frederick Law Olmsted's life and work. Sixteen selections, dating from the 1850's to the-1890's, reveal Olmsted's youthful interests as well as his mature thinking on cities, small residential sites, the history and theory of urban parks, and landscape architecture in general. Olmsted directly addressed important issues of his day, which remain as cogent as ever in today's environmental crisis. In this selection of 16 lightly-edited papers (1851-1895) of the best- known and arguably most prolific U.S. landscape architect, Twombly (architectural history, City College of New York) presents Olmstead's still-relevant urban park design philosophy. Excepting for his "Plan for a Small Homestead" and lecture at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, which he landscaped, excluded are proposals on individual design plans and reports generated from Olmstead, Vaux, & Co. The book includes Olmstead's plans for Central Park and other projects, and suggested further reading.
