Scott (sociology, Stanford U.) presents a comprehensive introduction to institutional theory that relates past to present work, emphasizes the interdisciplinary nature of the field, and connects theory with empirical research. He outlines early contributions to institutional theory by economists, political scientists, and sociologists. He also briefly reviews the mid-20th century integration of institutional orientations into organization studies that gave birth the "new institutional" approaches in the 1970s. He presents a two-part conceptual framework for analyzing institutions first in terms of three regulative/normative/cultural-cognitive pillars, and then in terms of institutional logic, agency, carriers, and levels of analysis. The middle chapters address how institutionalization happens. The last chapters explore the influence institutions have on the shape of organizational structures. A final chapter provides an overview, some concluding observations, a cautionary comment about institutions as double-edged swords, and "a sermon."
