This introduction to the life and thought of mile Durkheim, one of the founding thinkers of sociology, seeks to present Durkheim’s ideas on their own terms in the context of his times, rather than imposing an interpretive framework, and aims to demonstrate that Durkheim was the most properly sociological of the three founders of sociology. After a bio chapter, there is a chapter summarizing Durkheim’s views on the individual and society and the sociological method. Later chapters deal with his writing on moral solidarity, offer a close reading of two of his books (The Rules of Sociological Method and Suicide), and consider his lectures and writings on education.
