Shugendo In this strategic board game, you guide the expansion of your family’s settlement beyond the known borders of the forest. As your community grows, more settlers will gather under your banner. You will cultivate land, build new villages, and shape the future of your domain. However, expansion must be handled carefully. The wilderness is still home to ancient spirits, and disturbing them may bring trouble. The watchful yokai lurk in the forest, and their mischievous interference can disrupt your plans if you ignore their presence. Grow your influence, adapt your strategy, and attract skilled settlers to your community in order to earn victory points and become the most prosperous settlement. In Shugendo, each player begins with their own personal deck of cards. Over time, players strengthen their decks by replacing weaker starting cards with more powerful settler cards. Each round is divided into three phases: Reveal, Action, and Recruitment. During the reveal phase, players reveal cards from their deck until they choose to stop or until they “explode” by revealing seven or more yokai icons. If this happens, they may only perform either the action phase or the recruitment phase. During the action phase, players increase their meters according to the cards revealed and perform one of the core actions: explore, expand, or develop. Finally, in the recruitment phase, players gain bonuses based on their revealed cards and recruit new settlers from the available eras.
