Our Knowledge Publishing Gladiatorial combats in ancient Rome: The social and political significance

This thesis examines gladiatorial combat in ancient Rome from the 3rd century BC through to the Roman Imperial period of the 3rd century AD. It analyses the development of gladiatorial combat during this period within the context of the changing political and social system of the Roman Empire, and outlines its social and political significance at each stage.
