OR Books American Carnage: How Trump, Musk and DOGE Butchered the US Government
GTIN: 9781682196762 Raamatud
A gripping narrative of federal workers caught in Trump’s second-term purge, and the devastating consequences for American democracy. American Carnage follows eleven federal workers, in eight government agencies, from the time they were told they were fired in the early weeks of Donald Trump’s second presidential administration through to the summer of 2025. With Trump having empowered the world’s richest man, Elon Musk, and his Department of Government Efficiency, to make dramatic cuts to many of the country’s most important agencies, what unfolded in these months was a cascading tragedy of historic proportions. Their stories, which show a country in a profound moment of crisis and dislocation, are America’s stories. What happened to them—the bullying, the intimidation, the deliberate removal of financial stability—also happened to hundreds of thousands of other employees. A fierce reckoning with the intimate and far-reaching effects of these layoffs, both on the individuals who lost their jobs and on the millions of Americans who found their access to basic government services curtailed, American Carnage is the first book-length account of how these cuts dulled and denuded our city on the hill, leaving a morally impoverished landscape in their wake. Pikoprint Detektiiv Luuker Leebesurm: mängides tulega
GTIN: 9789949955862 Raamatud
Lubage tutvustada, Luuker Leebesurm ? tarkpeast detektiiv, kõikvõimas maag, räpaste trikkide ja murdvarguste meister. Ahjaa, ja surnud. Koos ebatavalise ja salapäraselt andeka Stephanie Edgleyga moodustavad nad liidu, mis peab jagu saama kõikematvast iidsest kurjusest. „Detektiiv Luuker Leebesurm: Mängides tulega“ on teine lugu Derek Landy põrgulikult põnevast noorteseeriast.Serpin on surnud, maailm on taas ohust päästetud. Autorid: Derek Landy

Eesti maastike teadusliku liigestusega on tänaseks tegeletud juba saja aasta vältel. Granö rolli Eesti geograafias on raske alahinnata.

Autorid: Silver Teinbas

Biteback Publishing Who Killed Kitchener?: The Life and Death of Britain's Most Famous War Minister
GTIN: 9781785902376 Raamatud
In June 1916, Field Marshal Lord Kitchener set sail from Orkney on a secret mission to bolster the Russian war effort. Just a mile off land and in the teeth of a force 9 gale, HMS Hampshire suffered a huge explosion, sinking in little more than fifteen minutes. Crew and passengers numbered 749; only twelve survived. Kitcheners body was never found. Remembered today as the face of the famous First World War recruitment drive, at the height of his career Kitchener was fêted as Britains greatest military hero since Wellington. By 1916, however, his star was in its descent. A controversial figure who did not make friends easily in Cabinet, he was considered by many to be arrogant, secretive and high-handed. From the moment his death was announced, rumours of a conspiracy began to flourish, with the finger pointed variously at the Bolsheviks, Irish nationalist saboteurs and even the British government. Using newly released files kept secret for almost 100 years, former Cabinet minister David Laws unravels the true story behind the demise of this complex figure, debunking the conspiracy theories and revealing the crucial blunders that the government and military sought to cover up. The result is the definitive account of an event that shook the country and which has been shrouded in mystery ever since. Autorid: David Laws

St Augustine's Press Woman Who Was Poor: A Novel
GTIN: 9781890318925 Raamatud
Written in the 1890s, Leon Bloy's masterful novel has had an immeasurable effect on all European Catholic writing since. (Bloy was responsible for the conversion of Jacques and Räissa Maritain in 1905, and they referred to him as their godfather.) It is an extraordinary book, powerful in the manner of dos Passos, and yet spiritual in the manner of the Bible. It is the story of a woman who is abysmally poor, brutally treated and exploited by her parents, living in the gutters of Paris, yet she retains the spiritual outlook and purity of a saint. We are spared no brutality, yet there are scenes of the most tender beauty. The woman, Clotilde, becomes an artist's model, meeting all the great French writers, among them the gloomy and magnificent Marchenoir, who is Bloy himself. They are all impressed by the depth of her thoughts and feelings; she finally marries one of them. They are pitifully poor, and the pages that cover the birth and death of their child shock with horror while moving the reader in their tragic beauty and tendernessfor this is Bloy, always hovering between death and ecstasy. Left a widow, Clotilda finds her true vocation, a vocation of poverty. She is the woman who is poor, no other words describe her more accurately. The novel ends with those famous words of extraordinary optimism: "There is only one miserynot to be saints." Autorid: Leon Bloy, I. J. Collins

University of Alberta Press Making Wonderful: Ideological Roots of Our Eco-Catastrophe
GTIN: 9781772126242 Raamatud
In Making Wonderful, Martin M. Tweedale tells how an ideology arose in the West that energized the economic expansion that has led to ecological disaster. He takes us back to the rise of cities and autocratic rulers, and analyzes how respect for custom and tradition gave way to the dominance of top-down rational planning and organization. Then came a highly attractive myth of an eventual future in which all of humankind's material and spiritual ills would be banished and life "made wonderful." Originating in Zoroastrianism and, through Jewish apocalyptic works, flowing into early Christianity, this belief produced utopian ideologies that set the West apart from the other civilizations of the old world. Tweedale shows how this thinking became popular among Western elites in the early modern period and eventually resulted in the distinctively Western doctrine of progress, an idea that once coupled with a virtually religious faith in the capacity of science and technology to improve human life, released economic expansion from traditional constraints. Exploring sources from philosophy, religion, and the history of ideas, Making Wonderful is for all readers who are intellectually curious about the roots of our eco-catastrophe. Autorid: Martin M. Every individual, from the most profound thinker to the casual observer, is composed of atoms -approximately 6.7110^27 of them. These arent just any atoms ... theyre the same ones that construct galaxies, stars, and the vast expanse of the universe. Predominantly, were made of water molecules and a diverse mix of organic molecules. Intriguingly, every single one of these atoms operates under the deterministic laws of quantum electrodynamics. These laws, known since the 1950s, form the bedrock of chemistry, biology, and by extension, life as we know it. If the laws of physics fully determine the motion of every atom in our body, how could we possibly have free will -or do we have it after all? Autorid: Samir Varma

Eighteenth-century readers were just as interested in gossip—especially about the rich and powerful—as contemporary readers. This volume contains the full text of William Hill Brown’s 1789 novel The Power of Sympathy and the related plays Sans Souci, alias, Free and Easy and Occurrences of the Times, all of which draw on contemporary scandal and intrigue among the elite of Boston in constructing their plots. The literary works collected here used a combination of sentiment and satire to address the public and private moral corruption and structural inequalities that made young American women especially vulnerable—and burdened them as symbols of national virtue. Situating the works within their milieu, the editors highlight the experiences of actual readers to explain why these scandals were so compelling on personal and political levels.Historical documents provide further context for the events, including debates about women’s education and political agency; the post-Revolutionary cultural work of novels, plays, and poetry; and controversies surrounding literary and journalistic representations of seduction, suicide, and other instances of unregulated passion. The only student contextual edition of a foundational American novel. Autorid: William Hill Brown, Jennifer Harris, Bryan Waterman

McGill-Queen's University Press Wild Word: Animals in the Gospels
GTIN: 9780228024712 Raamatud
The Wild Word presents new readings of the way animals are used in the Gospels to create, reinforce, and transgress social boundaries, as well as to enforce and collapse the categories of domesticity/wildness and natural/unnatural. Placed in a manger as an infant, Jesus seems to have been born into a world teeming with animal life. Yet read the stories again. Does Mary ride a donkey? Does the centurion ride a horse? Animals are everywhere in the Gospels, though not always in the ways we expect. Where animals are visible, their presence means more than we realize. The Wild Word explores the Gospels’ well-known, forgotten, and missing portrayals of animals. Jaeda Calaway examines the many interactions between humans and other animals in these biblical texts, first considering forms of consumption, such as eating animals, wearing animal products, working animals, and sacrificing animals. She then turns to symbolic animality: how humans assign animal traits and archetypes to other humans, how divine and demonic powers intersect with wild and domestic animals, and what queer and trans readings of Gospel animals can illuminate. Told and retold for two thousand years, the Gospel stories are deeply imprinted on Western culture. The Wild Word reveals how many of their associations with animals, animality, and wildness remain with us today. Autorid: Jaeda Charlotte Calaway

University of Pennsylvania Press Undoing Slavery: Bodies, Race, and Rights in the Age of Abolition
GTIN: 9781512829723 Raamatud
Undoing Slavery excavates cultural, political, medical, and legal history to understand the abolitionist focus on the body on its own terms. Motivated by their conviction that the physical form of the human body was universal and faced with the growing racism of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century science, abolitionists in North America and Britain focused on undoing slavery’s harm to the bodies of the enslaved. Their pragmatic focus on restoring the bodily integrity and wellbeing of enslaved people threw up many unexpected challenges. This book explores those challenges.Slavery exploited the bodies of men and women differently: enslaved women needed to be acknowledged as mothers rather than as reproducers of slave property, and enslaved men needed to claim full adult personhood without triggering white fears about their access to male privilege. Slavery’s undoing became more fraught by the 1850s, moreover, as federal Fugitive Slave Law and racist medicine converged. The reach of the federal government across the borders of free states and theories about innate racial difference collapsed the distinctions between enslaved and emancipated people of African descent, making militant action necessary.Escaping to so-called “free” jurisdictions, refugees from slavery demonstrated that a person could leave the life of slavery behind. But leaving behind the enslaved body, the fleshy archive of trauma and injury, proved impossible. Bodies damaged by slavery needed urgent physical care as well as access to medical knowledge untainted by racist science. As the campaign to end slavery revealed, legal rights alone, while necessary, were not sufficient either to protect or heal the bodies of African-descended people from the consequences of slavery and racism. University Press of Mississippi One Time, One Place: Mississippi in the Depression: a Snapshot Album, Updated Edition
GTIN: 9781496861238 Raamatud
Eudora Welty is among the very few authors acclaimed for their work in both literature and photography. In 1971 she surprised her readers with this important book, for in One Time, One Place many of them learned for the first time that this revered writer was also a gifted photographer. One Time, One Place is the only book of Weltys where she selected all images. Throughout her writing career, Welty's camera was a close companion. The one hundred pictures included here are for the first time digitally scanned to maximize the contrast and beauty of her vision. These are her selections from many she took during the Great Depression as she traveled in her home state of Mississippi. These pictures are poignant images of human endurance. For her, looking back, they showed a record of a time and a place, an impoverished world that against great odds sustained a sense of community. Both Black and white, the men, women, and children she photographed, unaware that they are coping with dire conditions, press onward with their lives. "The Depression, in fact," Welty says in her introduction, "was not a noticeable phenomenon in the poorest state in the Union." The foreword by William Maxwell, Eudora Welty's dear friend and esteemed colleague in literature, offers an appreciation of this photographer's special genius and a loving glimpse into her artistic world. This new version of One Time, One Place keeps the original photos and foreword intact, while providing higher-quality versions of the classic images. Autorid: Eudora Welty, William Maxwell

In the dog days of an Estonian summer, Liine flees to the countryside to put a conclusive end to her toxic 14-year relationship. She undergoes every stage of separation in a lone farmstead amid forests. Physical labor and gardening help her withstand her ex-partner’s threats, the incredulity of friends and family, and her own anguish. Dread is pervasive in this novel. Set in the near future, it is filled with vivid depictions of the threat of climate change. All around Liine, nature is facing acute drought and heat. No less menacing is the presence of an expanding NATO base close to the cottage at the Russian border. The world’s largest military alliance is practicing for an attack. Explosions and shots ring in the distance while Liine tries to recover from fourteen years of violence. Yet she simply follows the rhythm of nature as summer unfolds. While her environment changes around her, Liine—always in the garden chopping wood, weeding, sowing—undergoes profound transformations, too. The Cut Line is a story of fear, self-blame, grief, numbness, and anger ultimately giving way to hope and healing, joy and lightness. Autorid: Carolina Pihelgas, Darcy Hurford

Practical Inspiration Publishing Accounting Paradox: How financial accounting is damaging the world (but can help repair it)
GTIN: 9781788607131 Raamatud
When you think about the tools at our disposal to address the ecological, social and biodiversity challenges we face today, accounting might not immediately come to mind. And yet it is accounting standards, not science and not public policy, that set out how profit is calculated, which in turn drives investment decisions. What if we demanded that those standards reflect the true cost of business and its consequences?Unless we look again at these fundamental principles, which have gone under the radar for so long, capital markets will continue to contribute to inequality, nature loss and climate change. What’s remarkable is that we already have in place everything we need for a more just and complete approach to accounting, and forward-thinking businesses are beginning to recognize that.Jeremy Nicholls – accountant, sustainability professional, historian and activist – sets out a vision for new way of accounting, and it’s one that we can adopt immediately. Think accounting is dull? Think again. What we accept as ‘true and fair’ in businesses’ accounts is the key to a more just, sustainable future for all of us. Here’s how we make the change. Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Multi/Race/Less/Ness: A Process Philosophy
GTIN: 9781350435483 Raamatud
It is not new, or radical, to suggest that 'race' is a social construct. The idea has been prominent in social, political and philosophical discourse for decades. The bold challenge put forward by Jon Ivan Gill is that this idea is just a halfway house – questioning the fixity of race while doing nothing to lessen the trauma caused by its continued presence as a category of human identity. Can we truly end racism before we dissolve the notion of race itself, and if we do then what are we left with?Showing the role that philosophy of religion has played in reifying ideas of race and racial categories, Gill looks beyond that legacy to a world after and beyond those ideas. With seemingly immutable notions of race still baked into our societies at the level of law and legislation, process philosophy can remind us that being, and how we define it, is dynamic and will change over time. If race as a category is impermanent, then it can be undone. Dispelling this 'powerful apparition' has deep-laced significance for contemporary society, from cancel culture and reparations to mixed race identity and the suppression of ethnicity and nationality. This is at once a keen dissection of colonial apparatus and a practical, creative vision for a new way of organizing ourselves. A bold, fluent vision for moving beyond racial categories into a world free from the colonial structures that they reinforce. Autorid: Jon Ivan Gill

Trafalgar Square In the Scent of Horses, Hay, and Old Barns: The Story of Eleanor Prince, Intrepid American Horsemanship Educator
GTIN: 9781646013012 Raamatud
A narrative retelling of the life of a horse girl who moved west and started one of the nation’s longest running equestrian schools. In early autumn, 1958, thirty-two-year-old Eleanor Fracker Smith left her family roots in Massachusetts and moved to southeast Wyoming. There, she realized her life philosophy: that people can do without a lot of things, but no one should have to live without horses. Living on the dry, wind-swept prairie west of Laramie, Ellie bought horses she could afford: ill, malnourished, and poorly trained. Through her accumulated knowledge of equine care, Ellie turned her unimpressive herd into show-ring winners and sought-after breeding stock. In 1961, she established Sodergreen Horsemanship School based on a uniquely immersive curriculum, with lectures and lessons based upon love, patience, mutual trust, communication, and—most importantly—groundwork. For forty years, Ellie’s renowned depth of knowledge and commitment to educating the horse-loving public drew students of all ages and skills. When Ellie married Bill Prince in 1966, they purchased a rundown ranch, just west of Cheyenne, and took with them the school and its name. Classes were full every summer until the school officially closed in 2001. Ellie stayed involved in teaching and other horsemanship activities until she passed away in 2024, in her ninth decade. “I was nutty about horses,” she once said, “and couldn’t see life any other way.” Pamela Galbreath’s finely tuned narrative reverently traces the arc of Ellie Prince’s lifetime of service to horses and horsemanship with remarkable attention to setting and detail, transporting readers from the suburbs of Boston to the plains of the West. Those who love horses or have an interest in the history of horsemanship in the United States will find themselves wishing they could have been taught by Ellie Prince. Autorid: Pamela Galbreath

WW Norton & Co Tiny Gardens Everywhere: The Past, Present, and Future of the Self-Provisioning City
GTIN: 9781324105831 Raamatud
"Rooted in a fruitful history, this manifesto for the next food revolution by acclaimed environmental historian Kate Brown speaks to nature lovers, food activists, social justice warriors, urban planners, WOOFers, and Idealists of all varieties. Is a trip to the farmer's market nearly a religious ritual for you? Do you love composting? This rich and fascinating history justifies your passions. Beginning in the 17th century, British peasants lost the commons from which they had fed themselves for generations when capitalists frowned on self-provisioning in order to encourage wage labor. But small-scale gardeners in Paris, Berlin, London and elsewhere fought back, building topsoil in the city with composted garbage and other animal and human waste. They created the most productive, sustainable agriculture in recorded human history, growing local, diverse, organic food on marginal land without burning fossil fuels, creating ecologically and socially diverse networks of flora, fauna, and people. In Nazi Berlin, working-class gardeners harbored dissidents ands Jews throughout the war. On the fringes of Washington, DC, Black Southern migrants built communities around gardens and orchards, the produce funding home-ownership. Behind the Iron Curtain, Soviet and post-Soviet garden allotments prevented a recurrence of mass famine. In post-war America, suburban lawns took on a totalitarian character: gardeners, particularly gardeners of color, fined and harangued for defying the flat green conformity of turf. Yet the creativity of gardeners inspires hope in the 21st century; in rust-belt Mansfield, OH, helping prisoners to imagine fruitful lives. in the sinking, nitrogen-soaked Netherlands, dependent on industrial food, a progressive movement for community gardens and food forests provide an inspiring vision of a vastly more sustainable future. Down to earth gardeners, working with each other and with nature, have reaped abundant harvests while fostering mutual aid and political engagement. Grafting contemporary experience and concerns onto every historical chapter, Kate Brown creates a mesmerizing hybrid of archival historical research (about half or two-thirds of the book) and contemporary personal interviews and experience, resulting in an eloquent narrative deeply rooted in history, full of colorful stories delivering eye-opening information. The food-industrial complex is the primary contributor to climate change. Call it a utopian dream, but urban gardening offers much-needed hope"-- Provided by publisher. Nurturing health, hope, and community, gardeners in cities and suburbs are reclaiming lost commons, transforming vacant lots into vibrant plots, turning waste into compost, and recreating what was once the most productive agriculture in recorded human history. In a history that has been hidden in plain sight, working-class gardeners have consistently played an outsized role. In London, they devised ways to feed themselves when wage labor fell short. In Paris, a superabundance of horse manure in the streets nourished urban gardens that fed two million residents. In Berlin, gardeners built social safety nets for those marginalized by the state. In Washington, DC, African American migrants brought rural traditions of self-provisioning that were later disrupted by “urban renewal.” In rustbelt Mansfield, Ohio, farming ex-cons grow hope for the city’s future. In post-Soviet Estonia, shared gardens became lifelines for survival amid economic upheaval. And in Amsterdam, activists are reclaiming sustainable farming practices in a sinking landscape oversaturated with fertilizers.Tilled into this rich history of urban agriculture is an inspiring layer of contemporary activism. Each chapter includes contemporary stories of people from all walks of life who, in their gardens, are continuing a great tradition of mutual aid, political resistance, and bold experiments in sustainability.Tiny Gardens Everywhere From the eighteenth century to the twenty–first, the surprising history and inspiring contemporary panorama of urban gardening: nurturing health, hope, and community. Crosleys book of published letters is a unique and interesting addition to the body of first-hand literature on the Russian Revolution. It is particularly important as the product of a female author. Pauline Crosleys role and experience in Russia in 1917 was much the same as the diplomatic wives of the US Foreign Service: she was largely responsible for their social calendar and the day-to-day operations of their home. Her letters tend to focus on the details of everyday life, particularly the assessment of their fuel and food supplies, as well as the changing cultural scene and growing violence in the city. Crosleys letters give us a sense of what life was like during these tumultuous months, and serve as a fascinating companion to some of the more politically detailed accounts of the revolutionary period."
