Today s garden?designers and avid home gardeners have new concerns about ensuring their gardens are above all resilient: They must reduce urban temperatures, protect and improve wildlife habitat, and be able to thrive without traditional chemical maintenance. This volume shows us how to do all that and more step by step, covering every aspect of designing a garden, including finding relevant local environmental data, defining the actual planting challenge, telling a narrative with plants, sketching plans, designing planting compositions full of structure and texture, generating plant palettes and seasonal color schemes, and evaluating sustainability. International case studies of the best new gardens by today s top designers highlight each of these topics and delve further into the design process.Illustrated with hundreds of full-color photos, Fisher Tomlin guides readers on how to create gardens that are truly appropriate for the needs of specific landscapes and therefore likely to succeed, as well as lovely. This book is intended for professionals and students in landscape design programs, and will also appeal to a crossover lay audience of avid home gardeners.

This new title in the Crossbill Guides covers the well-known region of Dordogne in southwestern France. This title poses and answers two key questions: what makes this area so special and how you can experience this uniqueness for yourself and describes the flora and fauna, landscape and traditional land use of this region.
The novel centers around Michel, a forty-year-old exhibits agent for the French Ministry of Culture. In the opening chapter, he must deal with his father's murder.
This is the most up-to-date and comprehensive study of French history available ranging from the early middle ages to the present. Amongst its central themes are the relationships between state and society, the impact of war, competition for power, and the ways in which power has been used. Whilst taking full account of major figures such as Philip Augustus, Henri IV, Louis XIV, Napoleon and de Gaulle, it sets their activities within the broader context of changing economic and social structures and beliefs, and offers rich insights into the lives of ordinary men and women. This third edition has been substantially revised and includes a new chapter on contemporary France - a society and political system in crisis as a result of globalisation, rising unemployment, a failing educational system, growing social and racial tensions, corruption, the rise of the extreme right, and a widespread loss of confidence in political leaders.
A new edition of this guide highlighting what to see as well as where to stay and what to eat in Paris. A mini encyclopedia of the great European city.
Robert Doisneau's enchanting black-and-white photographs immortalize the magic of Paris, with its combination of dreamy nostalgia and teeming modernity. Profoundly fascinated by his city, the photographer possessed an uncanny ability to capture poetry in ordinary moments-from the jubilation of the Liberation in 1944, to a gaggle of schoolchildren crossing the street, or the famous kiss in front of the Hôtel de Ville-and it was this eye for humor and poignancy that infused his work with enduring popular appeal. The 560 photographs in this definitive volume-curated by his daughters Annette Doisneau and Francine Deroudille-are enhanced by witty and revealing quotations from the photographer's personal notebooks.

And now, dear reader, for your intellectual toilet, here is a little piece of soap. Well handled, we guarantee it will be enough. Let us hold this magic stone. The poet Francis Ponge (1899-1988) occupied a significant and unchallenged place in French letters for over fifty years, attracting the attention and admiration of generations of leading intellectuals, writers, and painters, a notable feat in France, where reputations are periodically reassessed and undone with the arrival of new literary and philosophical schools. Soap occupies a crucial, pivotal position in Ponge s work. Begun during the German occupation when he was in the Resistance, though completed two decades later, it determined, according to Ponge, the form of almost all his postwar writing. With this work, he began to turn away from the small, perfect poem toward a much more open form, a kind of prose poem which incorporates a laboratory or workshop, recounting its own process of coming into being along with the final result. The outcome is a new form of writing, which one could call processual poetry.Ponge s later work, from Soap on, is a very important tool in the questioning and rethinking of literary genres, of poetry and prose, of what is literature.

Claude Monet (1840-1926) is one of the best-known and most beloved painters in the history of art, with myriad publications and exhibitions devoted to his oeuvre. And yet, there remains a previously undiscovered aspect of his career: his surprisingly significant role as a draftsman. This book is the first to focus on Monet's pastels, drawings, and sketchbooks, offering a revolutionary new interpretation of the artist's life and work. Monet has long been seen as an anti-draftsman, an artist who painted his subjects directly and whose rarely seen graphic works were marginal to his artistic process. In an effort to develop his public image, Monet denied the role of drawing in his working method. In actuality, Monet began his career as a caricaturist and as a teenager developed a passion for drawing that was never extinguished. He went on to master the medium of pastel and included seven in the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874.Citing recently discovered, unpublished documents that overturn the accepted image of the artist, "The Unknown Monet" reveals an extensive group of graphic works created over the course of the artist's career, many of which are unknown to the general public and to scholars: beautiful pastels, stunning black chalk drawings, and fascinating sketchbooks, which include pencil studies that relate to many of his paintings. The book also shows how Monet exploited the print media to promote his art. The most important publication on Monet to appear in a generation, this illuminating volume is essential to anyone interested in his work, Impressionism, and nineteenth-century French culture.

Emily in Paris: The Fashion Guide chronicles the bold, whimsical, and unapologetically fabulous outfits of Netflix’s most stylish American, Emily Cooper, in the City of Light—not to mention those of her chic friends, lovers, and colleagues. The first o!cial book on the series is curated and authored by Marylin Fitoussi, the award-winning costume designer behind the global sensation that is the fashion of this blockbuster show—one that sparked viral conversations about Emily Cooper’s blend of vintage couture, color clashes, and prints upon prints that are nothing if not impossible-to-miss. With a foreword by Emily in Paris creator Darren Star, who revolutionized the role of fashion in television with iconic series like Sex and the City, the book underscores how costume can drive character and story alike. As both Fitoussi and Darren Star note, the clothes in Emily in Paris are more than wardrobe—they are characters, revealing emotion and transforming perception.A true behind-the-scenes look at one of television’s most aesthetically influential (and controversial) shows, Emily in Paris: The Fashion Guide unveils Fitoussi’s process: from original costume concepts and vintage sourcing adventures to fittings inside the show’s Paris atelier. Spotlighting Marylin’s twenty-five favorite looks (with her insights on each), the title features photos captured exclusively for Assouline, never-before-published mood boards, sketches, and insider commentary, including Marylin’s handwritten musings in the margins throughout.Describing her work as "a manifesto for freedom” and "a refusal to follow rules,” Fitoussi embraces an exuberant, unapologetic approach—her introduction defiantly addresses the show’s critics—that marries major fashion houses with emerging designers she personally champions, from Chanel to Ludovic de Saint Sernin. For Season 4 alone, Marylin pulled more than 25,000 pieces from over 480 brands, reflecting her conviction that the art of dressing should be democratic, daring, and fun. Each look is defined by digital-age sartorial maximalism, which makes Emily in Paris so instantly recognizable. As anticipation builds for Season 5’s December 18 premiere, Emily in Paris: The Fashion Guide stands as the ultimate glossary of the show’s evolution, a front-row seat to Darren"Star’s cultural phenomenon, and, above all, a celebration of the sheer joy of dressing up.
