The critic's job becomes one of the interpreting human symbolizing wherever he finds it, with the aim of illuminating human motivation. Thus the reach of the literary critic now extends to the social and ethical. "A Grammar of Motives" is a 'methodical meditation' on such complex linguistic forms as plays, stories, poems, theologies, metaphysical systems, political philosophies, and constitutions. Estudio a cargo de Fernando Garrido Baixauli, traductor de las memorias de Pankiewicz.El 3 de marzo de 1941, las autoridades alemanas del Gobierno General, una parte de la extinta Polonia que los ejércitos de Hitler y Stalin se habían repartido en 1939, decretan la creación de un gueto en Cracovia. Tadeusz Pankiewicz, un farmacéutico católico residente en Podgórze, el distrito donde se confinaría a los judíos de la zona, recibe la orden de abandonar su vivienda y su apteka, obteniendo en compensación un próspero negocio en el centro de la capital, confiscado a un farmacéutico judío. Pankiewicz se resiste a cumplir el mandato de las autoridades alemanas, convirtiéndose en el único residente no judío del gueto de Cracovia. Toma esta determinación convencido de que la hegemonía nazi sobre Europa no se prolongará, y los verdugos serán derrotados. Permanecer en el gueto contra la voluntad de las autoridades nazis expone a Pankiewicz al peligro constante de perder la vida y la fortuna. El farmacéutico pagará onerosos sobornos a los cuerpos policiales en el gueto, siendo testigo de la brutalidad de las fuerzas de ocupación y sus colaboradores en esta antesala al exterminio sistemático de millones de personas en campos de la muerte como Bełżec, Treblinka, Sobibor o Auschwitz. Pero Pankiewicz no se comportará como un mero testigo del horror, sino que, junto a sus empleadas, Helena Krywaniuk, Aurelia Danek-Czortowa y Irena Droździkowska, tendrá el coraje de prestar ayuda a cuántos pasan por su establecimiento en esos días, convertida la apteka Pod Orłem en un refugio durante los registros, deportaciones y asesinatos. Desde 1941 hasta 1943, el periodo que se extiende entre la fundación del gueto y el traslado de sus últimos residentes al campo de trabajo de Płaszów, Pankiewicz y sus colaboradoras asistirán a decenas de miles de personas, salvando cientos de vidas con un altruismo que cristalizará en todo tipo de acciones arrojadas, incluso temerarias, que van desde introducir comida, medicamentos y prensa de forma clandestina en el gueto, hasta ocultar a residentes señalados para su deportación o asesinato, ponerles en contacto con amigos y parientes fuera de aquellos muros, conseguir visados y documentación que favorezca su huida o sobornar a guardias y funcionarios con el único propósito de coronar una vida más, una muerte menos.Al final de la guerra, Pankiewicz dio testimonio del horror vivido aquellos días en un relato estremecedor, bajo el título de La farmacia del gueto de Cracovia. El libro que sigue es un estudio de la figura de Tadeusz Pankiewicz, el contexto de esos años pavorosos y la crónica que su autor nos legó en 1947, revisada posteriormente en 1982. Tal compromiso exige de nosotros el recuerdo, la comprensión, el elogio y la conciencia de nuestra responsabilidad, que no es otra que no dejarnos seducir por la ignominia del verdugo ni la abulia del espectador, sino por el compromiso de quienes, como Pankiewicz, valoraron la vida del otro por encima de su cómoda fortuna.
