1918 The Americans Under French Command: The Champagne-Argonne Offensives: Blanc Mont, Marines and African-Americans
GTIN: 9781036138578 Raamatud
Pershing’s aim had always been to fight the Germans with an independent American Army (the AEF, the American Expeditionary Forces) instead of dividing his divisions between the allies. When the Germans launched the first attack of their Spring Offensives on 21 March 1918, he was still far away from the creation of this independent army. During the first three months of 1918 only a few divisions could be considered as available for immediate action. On 26 March 1918 Foch was selected as the Supreme Allied Commander. Two days later, to solve immediate allied manpower problems and to check the German assault, General Pershing temporarily placed all American forces at the disposal of Supremo Foch. It was agreed that the availability of American troops would only last so long as was needed to check the German advance. This book deals with three lesser known battles fought by five divisions of the AEF that took place in the Champagne/Marne Region between the City of Reims and the Argonne Forest. The narrative includes actions of the 2nd, 36th, 42nd, 92nd and the 93rd Divisions. The latter two were made up of African-American troops. The five tours are ideal for visitors who have a few hours to spare coming from or going to the St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne and Verdun battlefields from one of Paris’s airports. They cover a lesser known area and each tour will not take more than a few hours. The starting points are all situated a little north of the A4, the Paris-Metz motorway. The tours also bridge the gap between the better known Chemin des Dames and Meuse-Argonne battlefields.

Autorid: Maarten Otte
In 1919, award-winning poet Eve L. Ewing recovers the essentially human stories at the heart of the Chicago Race Riot of 1919: of the people who took part in it, and of the lives that were marked by it.This most intense of the riots of the USA's 'Red Summer' lasted eight days, resulting in thirty-eight deaths and almost 500 injuries; it was a signal and traumatic event which has now shaped the history of the city where it took place for a century. As well as telling the tale of the riot itself and the cruel murder which precipitated it, the poems of 1919 explore its aftermath and bring to vivid life the mass migrations which had set the stage for this violence in the preceding years.Poetically recounting the stories of everyday people trying to survive and thrive in the city, and using speculative and Afrofuturist lenses to reimagine history, the result is a book which unearths the universal at the heart of the particular, and illuminates the fine line between past and present.

Autorid: Eve Ewing
1920s Scrapbook
GTIN: 9780954795467 Raamatud
With over 1,000 colourful images, Robert Opie brings to life the 1920s and captures the mood of this radical decade in Great Britain. The Twenties were a time for change and invention. The arrival of the wireless provided a new form of entertainment and The Radio Times was launched in 1923. The popularity of the cinema continued and was changed forever with the coming of 'talkies' and The Jazz Singer in 1926. While there were many notable events, from the Tutankhaman discoveries to the Empire exhibition at Wembley, unemployment and workers' discontent pervaded everyday life, culminating in the General Strike of 1926. For children, however, fun and amusement could be found with new cartoon characters: the antics of Felix the Cat at the pictures, tales of Pooh Bear in A.A. Milne's book Winnie-the-Pooh and, in newspapers, Bonzo the Dog (Daily Sketch), Rupert the Bear (Daily Express), Teddy Tail (Daily Mail) and Pip, Squeak and Wilfred (Daily Mirror),. Apart from women daring to smoke (especially Turkish cigarettes), the young flappers found freedom in the rising hemlines that revealed their legs and enabled the new energetic dances such as the Charleston and Black Bottom. It was an experimental age for hairstyles, perming, crimping, bobbing. No wonder that this decade became known as the 'Roaring Twenties'.

Autorid: Robert Opie
1922 Committee: Power Behind the Scenes
GTIN: 9781526173300 Raamatud
The 1922 Committee is seen as the kingmaker in Conservative politics. This book provides a comprehensive account of its history, structure and influence. The Conservative Private Members (1922) Committee is an important but elusive force in British politics. Despite becoming almost a household name during the leadership crises of 2022, it remains little understood beyond the corridors of Westminster.Established in 1923 by a group of Conservative MPs elected the year before, the Committee offers backbenchers an opportunity to discuss their views and coordinate independently of the frontbench. Over time it has become the kingmaker of the Conservative Party, overseeing leadership elections and confidence votes such as that faced by Boris Johnson over ‘partygate’.How did the Committee come together? How is it structured and how much power does it really wield? These are among the questions the book considers. Providing unprecedented insights into this long-standing institution, it is essential reading for anyone who cares about the integrity of our political system.

Autorid: Philip Norton
1922: Scenes from a Turbulent Year
GTIN: 9780857305015 Raamatud
1922 was a year of great turbulence and upheaval. Its events reverberated throughout the rest of the twentieth century and still affect us today, 100 years later.Empires fell. The Ottoman Empire collapsed after more than six centuries. The British Empire had reached its greatest extent but its heyday was over. The Irish Free State was declared and demands for independence in India grew. New nations and new politics came into existence. The Soviet Union was officially created and Mussolini's Italy became the first Fascist state. In the US, Prohibition was at its height. The Hollywood film industry, although rocked by a series of scandals, continued to grow. A new mass medium - radio - was making its presence felt and, in Britain, the BBC was founded. In literature it was the year of peak modernism. Both T. S. Eliot's The Waste Land and James Joyce's Ulysses were first published in full.In society, already changed by the trauma of war and pandemic, the morals of the past seemed increasingly outmoded; new ways of behaving were making their appearance. The Roaring Twenties had begun to roar and the Jazz Age had arrived.1922 also saw the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb, the arrest of Mahatma Gandhi, the death of Marcel Proust, the election of a new pope, the release of the first major vampire movie, and the brief imprisonment in Munich of an obscure right-wing demagogue named Adolf Hitler. In a sequence of vividly written sketches, Nick Rennison conjures up all the drama and diversity of an extraordinary year.

Autorid: Nick Rennison
1923: The Crisis That Led to Hitler's Coup
GTIN: 9781529360745 Raamatud
A BBC HISTORY MAGAZINE BOOK OF THE YEAR 'Excellent' Richard Evans 'A vivid, crisp, impressively sustained narrative' Financial Times 'Riveting' Irish Independent 'Refreshing and readable' Irish Times 'Gripping . . . thoroughly researched and beautifully written . . . a warning for our times' Alex Watson, author of Ring of Steel 'Fascinating . . . shows powerfully that there was nothing inevitable about the survival of Germany's young democracy in that year - nor about its death a decade later. A timely reminder' Katja Hoyer, author of Beyond the Wall The astonishing year when German democracy faced crisis and near destruction. 1923 was one of the most remarkable years of modern European history. In January, France and Belgium militarily occupied Germany's economic heartland, the Ruhr; triggering a series of crises that almost spiralled out of control. Hyperinflation plunged millions into poverty. The search for scapegoats empowered political extremes. Hitler's populism ascended to national prominence. Communists, Nazis, separatists all thought that they could use the crises to destroy democracy. None succeeded. 1923 was the year of Hitler's first victory - and his first defeat. Fanning the flames of instability, anti-government and antisemitic sentiment, the Nazis' abortive yet pivotal putsch in a Munich beer hall failed when they were abandoned by their likeminded conservative allies. Drawing on previously unseen sources, Mark Jones weaves together a thrilling and resonant narrative of German lives in this turbulent time. Tracing Hitler's rise, we see how political pragmatism and international cooperation eventually steered the nation away from total insurrection. A decade later, when Weimar democracy eventually succumbed to tyranny, the warnings from 1923 - rising of nationalist rhetoric, fragile European consensus, and underestimation the of the enemies of liberalism - became only too apparent. This account of the republic's convulsions and survival offers a gripping image of a modern society in extreme crisis.

Autorid: Mark Jones
Do you remember collecting birds’ eggs and cigarette cards? Or the first appearances of wrapped sweets like Mars and Milky Way The 1930s was a time of great progress, as engines took over from horse power, and electric light from gas and oil. Ordinary families aspired to own their own semi-detached house with a garage, and heated it with coal fires; smog was ever prevalent In cities. Some children were still sewn into their winter clothes, or went to school barefoot. This was a time of home cooking, and holidays were day trips, often by Charabanc. Families kept chickens and rabbits, children played with catapults and bows and arrows. And in the background, change was everywhere, with the Mallard speed record, the launch of the Queen Mary, the abdication of the King, and the increasing spectre of the impending Second World War. This delightfully nostalgic book will take you right back to a different age, remembering what life was like for those growing up in the 1930s. 1930s House Explained: Britain's Architectural History
GTIN: 9781846740022 Raamatud
This easy-reference guide reveals everything you need to know about houses built in the 1930s. Using his own drawings, diagrams and photographs, author Trevor Yorke explains in an easy-to-understand manner all aspects of the 1930s house, but particularly its style. The early 20th century was a key period for housing. The house-building boom of the late 1920s and the 1930s put home ownership within the reach of many for the first time. These were families with modest means but with high aspirations. Modern flat-roofed Art Deco villas grew up alongside detached and semi-detached mock Tudor styles. Many had both front and rear gardens. Interiors were required to be fashionable and to take advantage of new domestic inventions like the wireless radio and vacuum cleaner. Metro land had arrived. The book is divided into four sections. The first outlines the history of the period, and how it influenced the way houses were planned and built. The second steps inside and looks at the different rooms and their fittings, and then goes on to describe the gardens and garages. The third section explains briefly the developments in housing after this period, and the final section contains a quick reference guide including notes on how to date houses, a glossary of unfamiliar terms, suggestions for further reading and details of places to visit. The 1930s House Explained provides a definitive guide for those who are renovating, tracing the history of their own house, or simply interested in this notable and ever popular period.

Autorid: Trevor Yorke
1930s Scrapbook New edition
GTIN: 9780954795450 Raamatud
Filled to the brim with images, this scrapbook of the 1930s overflows with nostalgia, for those who remember that extraordinary era. For those who do not, this wealth of imagery provides a vivid insight into a time when sliced bread had just reached the table and Butlin's holiday camps had recently opened. Life in the 1930s for many was not easy; for others, who had known Victorian times, the pace of change was frightening, and 'modern' life led to 'nerve tension'. Yet change brought a better standard of living and numerous new products helped the daily routine. Electrical appliances were a boon to housewives without servants, affordable motor cars made access to the countryside easier, new fun included Dinky Toys, Monopoly and a stream of delectable confectionery (Mars bars, KitKat, Black Magic, Cadbury's Roses). The aluminium milk bottle top made its appearance. Design was memorable for the red telephone kiosk, the Anglepoise lamp and the Underground map - all still in evidence today. The Royal Family went through a turbulent year following the death of George V, when Edward VIII decided he had to abdicate. The speeding motorist was hampered by 30 mph restrictions, and pedestrian crossings were guarded by Belisha beacons. By the end of the 1930s, television held exciting promise for the future, but a growing tension focused on impending war. The 1930s Scrapbook has drawn together the best from the Robert Opie Collection. The images are as bright today as when they were purchased in the shops. Coronation souvenirs, film and fashion magazines, fireworks, comics and Christmas crackers - all survived to tell a remarkable story.

Autorid: Robert Opie
In a life that spanned 74 years, Fante wrote several great novels, such as Ask the Dust, and numerous screenplays. He died in 1983 from diabetes-related complications. Trapped in a small, poverty-ridden town in 1933, seventeen-year-old Dominic Molise yearns to fulfil his own dreams of becoming an American sports hero. This teenage southpaw aspires to the big leagues, big recognition and big love. He struggles, though, against the reality of his Italian parents, and comes under pressure to go into the family business. Brick-laying is not for Dominic. His father, however, seeks to pre-empt the inevitable road to failure by wanting Dominic to pick up a trowel instead of a pitcher's glove. His mother's response is to pray. Taylor has done us a great service in making the personal stories of what it was actually like to live through the most crucial year of the twentieth century vivid, compelling and salutary. - Roland Philipps, author of A Spy Named Orphan: The Enigma of Donald Maclean In the autumn of 1938, Europe believed in the promise of peace. Still reeling from the ravages of the Great War, its people were desperate to rebuild their lives in a newly safe and stable era. But only a year later, the fateful decisions of just a few men had again led Europe to war, a war that would have a profound and lasting impact on millions. Bestselling historian Frederick Taylor focuses on the day-to-day experiences of British and German people trapped in this disastrous chain of events and not, as is so often the case, the elite. Drawn from original sources, their voices, concerns and experiences reveal a marked disconnect between government and people; few ordinary citizens in either country wanted war. 1939: A Peoples History is not only a vivid account of that turbulent year but also an interrogation of our capacity to go to war again. In many ways it serves as a warning; an opportunity for us to learn from our history and a reminder that we must never take peace for granted.

Autorid: Frederick Taylor
A wonderful portrait of British upper-class life in the Season of 1939 - the last before the Second World War.The Season of 1939 brought all those 'in Society' to London. The young debutante daughters of the upper classes were presented to the King and Queen to mark their acceptance into the new adult world of their parents. They sparkled their way through a succession of balls and parties and sporting events. The Season brought together influential people not only from Society but also from Government at the various events of the social calendar. Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain chaperoned his debutante niece to weekend house parties; Lord Halifax, the Foreign Secretary, lunched with the Headmaster of Eton; Cabinet Ministers encountered foreign Ambassadors at balls in the houses of the great hostesses. As the hot summer drew on, the newspapers filled with ever more ominous reports of the relentless progress towards war. There was nothing to do but wait - and dance. The last season of peace was nearly over.

Autorid: Anne de Courcy
1940s Childhood: From Bomb Sites to Children's Hour
GTIN: 9780752499505 Raamatud
Do you remember collecting shrapnel and listening to Childrens Hour? Carrying gas masks or sharing your school with evacuees from the city? The 1940s was a decade of great challenge for everyone who lived through it. The hardships and fear created by a world war were immense. Britains towns and cities were being bombed on an almost nightly basis, and many children faced the trauma of being parted from their parents and sent away to the country to live with complete strangers. For just over half of this decade the war continued, meaning food and clothing shortages became a way of life. But through it all, and afterwards, the simplicity of kids shone. From collecting bits of shot-down German aircraft to playing in bomb-strewn streets, kids made their own fun. Then there was the joy of the second half of the 1940s, when fathers came home and the magic of normal life returned. This trip down memory lane will take you through the most memorable and evocative experiences of growing up in the 1940s.

Autorid: James Marsh, Peter Lovesey
One of the greatest and most terrible years in world history.'This war has now assumed the character', wrote Benito Mussolini, before 1941 was six months old, 'of a war between two worlds', and the Italian dictator had rarely predicted more truly. Before the year had ended, following Hitler's surprise assault on Russia and the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, thirty-seven nations were engaged in an all-out war reminiscent of Armageddon, 'the battle of that great day of God Almighty'. Richard Collier's latest narrative spans both this entire, devastating year, as well as the events that led up to it. From the hunting of the Bismarck through the North Atlantic to the triumphs of Rommel's Afrika Korps, from the horror and heroism of besieged Leningrad to the debacles of Hong Kong, Malaya and the Far East, this is a panorama of truly world-wide proportions. 1942: Britain at the Brink
GTIN: 9781408713709 Raamatud
'Taylor Downing vividly brings to life a terrible year' Max Hastings, Sunday Times 'Taylor Downing is a wonderful historian and a wonderful history communicator.' Dan Snow, History Hit Eighty years ago, Britain stood at the brink of defeat. In 1942, a string of military disasters engulfed Britain in rapid succession : the collapse in Malaya; the biggest surrender in British history at Singapore; the passing of three large German warships through the Straits of Dover in broad daylight; the longest ever retreat through Burma to the gates of India; serious losses to Rommel's forces in North Africa; the siege of Malta and the surrender at Tobruk. All of this occurred against the backdrop of catastrophic sinkings in the Atlantic and the Arctic convoys. People began to claim that Churchill was not up to the job and his leadership was failing badly. Public morale reached a new low. 1942 Britain At the Brink explores the story of frustration and despair in that year prompting the Prime Minister to demand of his army chief 'Have you not got a single general who can win battles?' Using new archival material, historian Taylor Downing shows just how unpopular Churchill became in 1942 with two votes attacking his leadership in the Commons and the emergence of a serious political rival. Most people think that Britain's worst moment of the war was in 1940 when the nation stood up against the threat of German invasion. In 1942 Britain at the Brink, Taylor Downing describes in nail-biting detail what was really Britain's darkest hour .

Autorid: Taylor Downing
1942: When World War II Engulfed the Globe
GTIN: 9781541603219 Raamatud
A penetrating history of the year World War II became a global conflict and humankind confronted both destruction and deliverance on a planetary scale By the end of the Second World War, more than seventy million people across the globe had been killed, most of them civilians. Cities from Warsaw to Tokyo lay in ruins, and fully half of the world’s two billion people had been mobilized, enslaved, or displaced. In 1942, historian Peter Fritzsche offers a gripping, ground-level portrait of the decisive year when World War II escalated to global catastrophe. With the United States joining the fight following Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor, all the world’s great powers were at war. The debris of ships sunk by Nazi submarines littered US beaches, Germans marauded in North Africa, and the Japanese swept through the Pacific. Military battles from Singapore to Stalingrad riveted the world. But so, too, did dramas on the war’s home fronts: battles against colonial overlords, assaults on internal “enemies,” massive labor migrations, endless columns of refugees. With an eye for detail and an eye on the big story, Fritzsche takes us from shipyards on San Francisco Bay to townships in Johannesburg to street corners in Calcutta to reveal the moral and existential drama of a people’s war filled with promise and terror.

Autorid: Peter Fritzsche
1945: The Reckoning: War, Empire and the Struggle for a New World
GTIN: 9781399714501 Raamatud
'I love how Phil Craig gave me perspectives on the Second World War that I had never accessed before, and the personal stories bring colonial history to life so engagingly. This book is a triumph.' Jane Caro 'An ambitious project impressively navigated with great storytelling, interweaving analysis and anecdote in a documentary style. Dunkirk, Lend Lease, Singapore, Belsen, the Arctic convoys, Chandra Bose, etc, are all connected but few historians rise to the challenge - or perhaps wish to stray far from 'favourite memories.' Chris Masters 'A riveting new account of a forgotten, if not hidden, history in the final months of the second world war. As all the best histories should, it reveals aspects of our national war-time story that have been overlooked for many years. For its new perspective, grounded in deep research. Australian readers will be alternately enthralled and enraged by 1945 The Reckoning at the naked exercise of imperial and commercial power in our region that Phil reveals, in the final months of a war we were told was for liberation and self determination.' Prof Jenny Hocking, Emeritus Prof Monash University. 'Engrossing, good natured and perceptive...His style is conversational, like a popular podcaster, but never glib or shrill. His judgments are often understated but shrewd...Craig's fashionably inclusive approach does not exclude conservative, collaborationist voices. Instead, the author seeks to understand them within their particular social and historical context. A solid and measured history in which Craig tells big stories through poignant images.' Mark Dapin, The Australian 'It's an epic canvas, ambitious, in some ways even Tolstoy-esque. Along the way Craig incorporates the tales of ordinary people - such as a very astute English nurse - caught up in extraordinary times. On both the narrative and thematic level this is skilfully told history for the general reader.' The Sydney Morning Herald 'Craig's vision is as global as was the war. His kaleidoscopic approach combines viewpoints from various theatres of war: for a few pages we are immersed in Burma, then we are teleported to Borneo, Singapore and, as the conflict spreads, Tokyo, London, Yalta and Formosa... He traces historical patterns by threading individual stories into a coherent and satisfying narrative, and he brings one other great gift to his task, a gift honed in his TV incarnation - a highly developed visual sensibility. It is easy to imagine this book being turned into a box-office triumph. As a parting gift to curious readers, the closing pages reveal the personal connection that explains why Craig was prompted to tell this epic story, with all its subplots. But no spoilers here... buy the book!' Ken Haley, Inside Story 'An unrelenting account of terror; example follows example of brutality and barbarity. There are accounts of battles; of bodies blown to bits; of atrocities and wanton killing committed by both sides - decapitation, head-hunting and the Allies paying for it. Yet in his account of these events, Phil Craig pays particular attention to the kindness, charity and humanity of his protagonists and others who occur along the way.' March 1945. Allied troops are poised to cross the Rhine and sweep on into Germany. Victory is finally within their grasp. But if they believe this victory can be easily won, they face swift disillusionment. The final 100 days of the Second World War will prove to be bitterly and bloodily fought, village by village, town by town.In Victory in the West 1945 acclaimed military historian Peter Caddick-Adams brings this closing stage of the Allies' fight against Nazi Germany brilliantly to life. He explores the immense challenges they faced in crossing the Rhine on a 300-mile front. He tells stories of individual acts of resolve and heroism, of often exhausted troops pressing forward attacks in the face of ferocious resistance. He recounts their shocked first encounters with the barbarities of Hitler's regime as they reached the gates of Buchenwald, Belsen and Dachau. And he goes behind the front line to analyse the strategic decisions made at Allied headquarters and to offer pin-sharp portraits of the military leaders.Throughout he draws on a vast range of memoirs and personal interviews with survivors to give a vivid sense of what it was like to encounter enemy combatants and civilians face to face. Compulsively readable, this will be the standard work on the closing days of the Second World War for a generation.

Autorid: Peter Caddick-Adams
With the end of the Second World War, a new world was born. The peace agreements that brought the conflict to an end implemented decisions that not only shaped the second half of the twentieth century, but continue to affect our world today and impact on its future. In 1946 the Cold War began, the state of Israel was conceived, the independence of India was all but confirmed and Chinese Communists gained a decisive upper hand in their fight for power. It was a pivotal year in modern history in which countries were reborn and created, national and ideological boundaries were redrawn and people across the globe began to rebuild their lives. In this remarkable history, the foreign correspondent and historian Victor Sebestyen draws on contemporary documents from around the world - including Stalin's personal notes from the Potsdam peace conference - to examine what lay behind the political decision-making. Sebestyen uses a vast array of archival material and personal testimonies to explore how the lives of generations of people across continents were shaped by the events of 1946. Taking readers from Berlin to London, from Paris to Moscow, from Washington to Jerusalem and from Delhi to Shanghai, this is a vivid and wide-ranging account of both powerbrokers and ordinary men and women from an acclaimed author.

Autorid: Victor Sebestyen
The story of a decade-1947 to 1957-that made and unmade India The first decade after India's independence, 1947-1957, was probably the most crucial in the nation's history. Opening a window to this period, this book weaves a story out of the complex ideas and events that have largely remained beneath the surface of public discourse. The transfer of power, the framing of the Constitution and the formation of the governance machinery; the clash of ideas and ideologies among parties and personalities; the beginning of the disintegration of the Congress and the consolidation of political forces in the opposition; Nehru's grappling with existential problems at home and his quest for global peace; the interplay between democratic ideals and ruthless power play-all these factors impinged on each other and shaped the new republic in its formative decade. 1948: A Critical and Creative Prequel to Orwell's 1984
GTIN: 9781804131299 Raamatud
Described as the most widely read and influential serious writer of the twentieth century, George Orwell remains relevant in our own era of contested media. He continues to attract a large readership. This book is about Orwells post-war cultural moment c. 1948. Taking his Diaries of the time as inspiration, together with his famous final novel, 1984 (published 1949), and treating them as contiguous texts, Brian May considers the gaps, equivocations, and contradictions in Orwell's message and asks what Orwell would have written next. But 1948 is more than a work of literary criticism: rather, it balances critical discussion with creative intervention, being one-half literary-critical commentary, and one-half fictional departure a novella titled From the Archives of Oceania, which quotes, parodies and pastiches Orwell's Diaries, offering a possible prequel. Together these elements offer a resource for the reader to interrogate anew such difficult issues as Orwell's sexism and anti-Semitism; to explore the tensions between various intertwining strands of thought that cast Orwell as both realist and idealist, Puritan and individualist; and to better understand Orwell's curious affection for the natural world. 1948 will appeal to all readers and critics of Orwell, but also to students of dystopian fiction, "revisionary" fiction and "reception study," which highlights the audiences contribution to an artwork's meaning.

Autorid: Brian May
Wembley saw its most exciting FA Cup Final ever with Stanley Matthews finally lifting the trophy. The top flight witnessed its closest-ever finish, and internationally the Mighty Magyars gave England a footballing lesson, as did Uruguay and Argentina. Sheffield Wednesday’s star striker Derek Dooley tragically lost a leg, and exasperated players went on strike over the unfairness of the contract system and the maximum wage. Others travelled to Colombia in a bid to make mega-money in a FIFA-banned rebel league. Many negotiated the first-ever image rights deals and endorsed everything from football boots and Lucozade to cigarettes and paint. In a fitting tribute to the new queen, eight of England and Scotland's best teams would clash in a one-off tournament to mark the start of Elizabeth II's reign, the Coronation Cup.

Autorid: Marvin Close
