A-Z of Glasgow: Places-People-History GTIN: 9781445681818 Raamatud Explore the fascinating history of Glasgow in this fully illustrated A-Z guide to the city's people and places. Glasgow was once the second city of the Empire, producing ships, locomotives, cars and heavy engineering for the world. It was also a religious centre, with one of Scotlands earliest churches; a centre for the Virginia tobacco trade; a home of designers and architects, inventors and entrepreneurs, artists and industrialists. It is that variety of talent, and the melting pot of immigrants and other Scots sucked into the city at its peak, that saw the phenomenal growth in wealth and culture which has left the city with a legacy of fine Victorian architecture, and it is its post-war decline that has seen a legacy of remote council estates. Glasgow has risen again, and is today a successful post-industrial city, thanks in no small part to the hugely influential Glasgows Miles Better campaign of the 1980s. Since then, it has demonstrated an ability to look at the past and preserve the best of the old, while producing some of the most startling modern architecture outside of London.Well-known Glasgow author and historian Michael Meighan takes the reader on a fascinating AZ tour of the citys history, exploring its lesser-known nooks and crannies, and along the way relating many a tale of the most interesting people and places. A-Z of Great Classrooms GTIN: 9781398388406 Raamatud The A-Z of Great Classrooms is a celebration of that magical double act of teaching and learning, organised around the 26 letters of the English alphabet. Over the past twenty years as a reviewer and inspector of schools and colleges in the UK and across the world, Roy Blatchford CBE has visited over 15,000 lessons in more than 1,000 settings. In this book he seeks to distil what happens in classrooms where learners are engaged and excited by what the skilled and knowledgeable teacher presents, weaving in examples, analysis and personal reflections. Roy Blatchford notes in the introduction: 'Across continents I have enjoyed being in the presence of children, young people and adults being taught by teachers who love their work and whose passion for subject shines through their every gesture and every word. The best lessons - you just don't want them to end! 'And there's nothing quite like the professional privilege of being in such classrooms, laboratories, dance studios, workshops, music practice rooms, sports halls, libraries, learning centres, sensory zones, outdoor settings, lecture theatres - wherever the learning unfolds. 'In Section One readers will form their own views about whether the A-Z alphabetical headings impose an editorial strait-jacket when teaching and learning are such dynamic affairs. An extended Venn diagram or a series of linked Olympic rings might well be a richer way of presenting the complexities, intricacies and flow of classrooms.' A-Z of Inequality GTIN: 9781915036018 Raamatud Generation rent is getting fed up with the boomers. We know something is going wrong with wealth inequality. The gap is widening between those that own houses, shares and other assets, versus those that dont. The more you own, the wider the gap. This book is about wealth inequality not income inequality. Over the past hundred years, governments have had a track record of reducing income inequality; through taxes on income and the provision of benefits, as well as publicly funded health and education. Wealth inequality is a different matter. We have seen the prices of houses, shares and other assets rise inexorably. Fine if you are an owner. Not so fine if you are a renter, or someone wanting to buy a home, or invest in a company. Solving these challenges is, however, not as difficult as it may appear. In this A-Z we look at how the state causes inequality, why it is damaging and what can be done about it.

Autorid: Sebastian Chambers
| Tellimisel (tarne 10-14 tp) | 16,30 € | Poodi | |

A-Z of Jane Austen GTIN: 9781350254206 Raamatud Jane Austen's richly textured worlds have enchanted readers for centuries and this neatly organised, playful book provides Austen enthusiasts and students alike with a unique insight into the much-loved writer's way with words. Using a lively A-Z structure, Greaney provides fresh angles on familiar Austen themes (D is for dance; M is for matchmaking), casts light on under-examined corners of her imagination (R is for risk; S is for servant), and shows how current social and cultural concerns are re-shaping our understanding of her work (Q is for queer; W is for West Indies). Through this approach, we learn how attention to the tiniest linguistic detail in Austen's work can yield rewarding new perspectives on the achievements of one of our most celebrated authors.Sharply focused on textual detail but broad in scope it broaches questions that, like Austen's work, will intrigue, delight and inspire: Why are children so marginal in her storylines? Who is the best exponent of matchmaking in her fiction? Why are many of her female characters but none of her heroines called Jane? Providing a new close-up encounter with one of our most celebrated writers, this book invites a renewed appreciation of the infinite subtlety and endless re-readability of a body of writing in which every word counts.

Autorid: Michael Greaney
| Tellimisel (tarne 10-14 tp) | 18,43 € | Poodi | |

Nevertheless, by 1980 Liverpools population had reduced by over half; its infrastructure and economy were decaying, and its political leaders were leading the city towards complete collapse. Today, Liverpool has the fastest-growing economy in Britain and has been a European Capital of Culture and is a UNESCO World Heritage City.Well-known local author Ken Pye takes the reader on a fascinating AZ tour of the citys history, exploring its lesser-known nooks and crannies, and along the way relating many a tale of the most interesting people and places. A-Z of Poole: Places-People-History GTIN: 9781398100428 Raamatud Poole is the second largest natural harbour in the world and the largest in Europe, resulting in a trading history which dates back to Roman times. In the Middle Ages, commodities for export, particularly wool, were funnelled into Poole and it became a place where merchants could dock, store their goods and display their wares. The port grew in importance during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and the boom years of trade with Newfoundland, but suffered from an economic slump throughout most of the nineteenth century and into the 1920s and 30s. However, in the decades after the Second World War, many major national companies were attracted to the town, resulting in 10,000 more homes being built in Poole between 1946 and 1966. A major slum clearance scheme also took place during the same period, as over 1,000 condemned homes were demolished, many in the labyrinth of narrow backstreets and alleyways leading from the Eastern Quay into the Old Town. Poole is still a working port, particularly on the Hamworthy side, where Sunseeker yachts off the production line can be seen adjacent to industrial cargo ships moored nearby and the ferry terminal. On the Poole side, the Fishermens Dock nestles incongruously adjacent to a yachting marina. The Quay and Old Town has preserved many cobbled streets and alleyways containing historic buildings, some dating back to the fourteenth century, once a haunt of Newfoundland merchants, pirates, smugglers and press gangs. This fascinating AZ tour of Poole, its interesting people, places and historic events, is fully illustrated with photography and will appeal to all those with an interest in this Dorset coastal town.

Autorid: Andrew Jackson
| Tellimisel (tarne 10-14 tp) | 24,39 € | Poodi | |

A-Z of Shrewsbury: Places-People-History GTIN: 9781445695877 Raamatud An engaging and informative tour of Shropshires county town of Shrewsbury highlighting its heritage, people and places. Shrewsbury, Shropshires county town, has been an important trading and administrative centre since medieval times because of its position on the River Severn close to the Welsh border. Today, much of the town follows its original medieval street layout and remains largely unspoilt, with its intriguingly named streets and alleyways. For visitors and residents alike there is much history to discover from the red sandstone castle to the fifteenth- and sixteenth-century timber-framed buildings reflecting the wealth from the wool trade. In A-Z of Shrewsbury local author Dorothy Nicolle seeks out stories from the past about the towns places and its famous sons and daughters. Notable people including Charles Darwin, Robert Clive and Wilfred Owen, intermingle with those who are, perhaps, lesser-known ranging from Aethelflaeda to Percy Thrower (the gardening expert), Cadman (the tightrope artiste) to Judge Jeffreys (the Hanging Judge). Shrewsbury School offers a number of interesting old boys and then there are fictional characters who have connections with the town such as Scrooge, and Brother Cadfael from the medieval murder mysteries by Ellis Peters. The author also focuses on the war memorials, statues and sculptures together with the wonderful street names that Shrewsbury is famous for including Grope Lane, Gullets Passage and how about Pig Trough! Among the events covered are the Battle of Shrewsbury, the Civil War as well as visits by royalty through the centuries and the Shrewsbury Flower Show which is one of the oldest in the country. Finally, many people ask is the name pronounced Shrowesbury or Shruesbury? Well, that depends largely on whoever you ask but, it seems that locals like to tell visitors that neither is right and neither is wrong as long as they make time to explore this lovely town.

Autorid: Dorothy Nicolle
| Tellimisel (tarne 10-14 tp) | 24,39 € | Poodi | |
