In this book Sebastian Posingis photographs the famed Sri Lankan garden of architect Geoffrey Bawa (1919-2003), described by its creator as a "place of many moods, the result of many imaginings." In 1948, as Ceylon was slipping off the shackles of colonial rule, the then young reluctant lawyer Bawa returned home from a decade of study and travel, and bought an abandoned rubber estate near the town of Bentota. He renamed it "Lunuganga" or "Salt River," and set out to transform it into a tropical evocation of the great landscape gardens of England and Italy that he had explored during his travels. 50 years later the garden was in its prime and had taken on a life of its own. Great trees had been felled and new ones planted to create it, hills had been moved and terraces cut, and now artworks graced it as objects for contemplation. And yet the garden seemed so natural that it belied the effort of its creation; it was a manicured wilderness of green on green, a place of unfolding vistas and rhythms. Today the garden survives, miraculously and precariously; and now within the pages of this book.

The case for a narrow avenue is made by exploring historical foundations in the Havana ITO negotiations and later difficulties of applying provisions to developed-developing country free-trade areas. The external economic effects for the trade of non-members will remain of concern, but rules of origin and regional safeguard regimes can affect intra-regional trade between large and small members as well. The GATT-47 practice is contrasted with WTO developments as dispute settlement reports have established the conditional legal nature of the regional exception. A treaty law argument is made that GATT/WTO rules retain continuing validity for regional members. Implications for the WTO review process are considered.
This book critically engages with the contemporary breakdown of trust between Muslim and non-Muslim communities in the West. It argues that a crisis of trust currently hampers intercultural relations and obstructs full participation in citizenship and civil society for those who fall prey to the suspicions of the state and their fellow citizens. This crisis of trust presents a challenge to the plurality of modern societies where religious identities have come to demand an equal recognition and political accommodation which is not consistently awarded across Europe, especially in nations which view themselves as secular, or where Islamic culture is seen as alien. This volume of interdisciplinary essays by leading scholars explores the theme of trust and multiculturalism across a range of perspectives, employing insights from political science, sociology, literature, ethnography and cultural studies. It provides an urgent critical response to the challenging contexts of multiculturalism for Muslims in both Europe and the USA. Taken together, the contributions suggest that the institutionalisation of multiculturalism as a state-led vehicle for tolerance and integration requires a certain type of trustworthy ¿performance¿ from minority groups, particularly Muslims. Even when this performance is forthcoming, existing discourses of integration and underlying patterns of mistrust can contribute to Muslim alienation on the one hand, and rising Islamophobia on the other.
