State University of New York Press Road Taken: Chinas Incorporation Process into the Capitalist World System and Its Capitalist Transition
GTIN: 9798855803075 Raamatud
Traces China's transformations with a focus on China's incorporation process in the nineteenth century, which help to grasp the historical origins of China's capitalism. As Europe's colonial powers reached China in the nineteenth century, they became so strong that China could no longer ignore them. Given that the unprecedented geographical expansion of the European system undermined a China-centered world order and brought unprecedented changes to Chinese society, an intriguing question—why and how the Chinese empire entered into the capitalist world economy—has attracted increasing attention among historians, historical sociologists, and world-systems researchers. Yet, there has been no comprehensive monograph touching on China's incorporation process into the capitalist world-economy. To rectify this, The Road Taken investigates China's incorporation process. Incorporation studies, based on world-systems analysis, aims to illustrate the long-term integration process of external arenas into the capitalist world-economy. Ru traces China's transformations with a focus on how incorporation process unfolded over the course of a century (1780s–1890s), which represents a watershed era in the relations between China and the capitalist world. State University of New York Press Geometries of Experience: Thinking with Remo Bodei
GTIN: 9798855804577 Raamatud
The first volume of essays in English on one of the most renowned contemporary Italian Philosophers.Remo Bodei (1938–2019) was one of Italy's most influential philosophers of the past half-century. His intellectual influence was wide-reaching as he guided the search for rational explanations of seemingly irrational phenomena and the philosophical underpinnings of poetry. Diverse both in their disciplinary approach and theoretical style, yet following a logical and coherent progression, the essays within Geometries of Experience begin with an exploration of Bodei's methodology followed by an analysis of his interest in the crisis of subjectivity in modern culture; his engagement with Spinoza, especially in his work Geometria delle passioni; his treatment of the body, framed as a "materialistic spirituality"; and his engagement with the relationship between philosophy and poetry. Overall, the book provides a rich and nuanced view of Bodei's intellectual legacy, demonstrating his distinctive approach to philosophy and literature. State University of New York Press Laughing on the Brink of Humanity: An Exercise in Epihumanism
GTIN: 9798855800005 Raamatud
Stretching from antiquity to AI, a provocative study of the joyless laughter that emerges at the boundary of the human and the inhuman. What does it mean to be human? And, more precisely, what does it mean to be human now, with both humanism and the humanities in crisis? In answer to these questions, Laughing on the Brink of Humanity seeks not some essence of the human but rather an epiphenomenal manifestation-a sign of the human. The book finds such a sign in the joyless, painful, and often deadly laughter that resonates when we cross the barrier between what is human and what is not: animality, machinery, divinity. Jan Miernowski brings together a wide swath of discourses and figures, from Plato and the Bible through early modern humanism, to Friedrich Nietzsche, Georges Bataille, Hannah Arendt, Claude Lanzmann, Spike Jonze, Tom Stoppard, and Michel Houellebecq. Looking for laughter on the brink of humanity-in literature and philosophy, natural science and film, theology and computer science-the book offers an exercise in epihumanism appropriate to our posthuman age. State University of New York Press Gaslighting: Philosophical Approaches
GTIN: 9798855801316 Raamatud
A feminist introduction to emerging philosophical understandings of gaslighting.Originating in a 1938 play, the term gaslighting has become part of our everyday vocabulary. But do we truly know what it means? This collection of new and foundational essays explores concepts and experiences of gaslighting from philosophical perspectives. Contributors build on longstanding feminist analyses of the relations among knowledge, affect, and power to consider how gaslighting can work at not only individual but also structural levels to undermine its targets. In examining racial, epistemological, medical, affective, political, and other forms of gaslighting, the book helps illuminate contemporary power relations and provides urgently needed tools for further research in and beyond the field of philosophy. State University of New York Press Applied Mysticism: Studies of Meditation and Psychedelics in Secular Contexts
GTIN: 9798855801514 Raamatud
Examines how mystical practices and experiences are being applied in secular contexts today.Today is an exciting time for mysticism. Interest in mysticism today often involves what Aldous Huxley called "applied mysticism"-that is, taking mystical practices and experiences out of their traditional contexts, where the focus was on the total transformation of the individual, and applying them (often within a secular framework) to help other people with more limited this-worldly problems, such as a person's well-being in society or general social change. Neuroscientists are taking mystical experiences seriously, studying meditators and psychedelic subjects to gain knowledge of how the brain works. Cognitive scientists are exploring mystical altered states of consciousness to expand the spectrum of consciousness states-in particular, whether there is a state of "pure" consciousness. Buddhist meditation is being taken out of its religious contexts and adapted by psychotherapists to help with problems such as depression or addiction. The use of psychedelics in psychotherapy is also gaining traction while New Age thinkers are extolling the alleged merger of post-Newtonian science with mysticism. Mystical ideas are being adapted to problems on the social level-for example, in "socially-engaged" Buddhism. This is the first book to explore all these varieties of applied mysticism together and to examine the current state of the field (with a focus on philosophical issues) in a readily accessible manner. State University of New York Press Lineages of Brahman Power: Caste, Family, and the State in Western India, 16001900
GTIN: 9798855803228 Raamatud
Traces the role that western India's influential Brahman communities played in shaping India's modern caste system.Western India's Brahman communities have played a key role in the shaping of India's modern caste system. In Lineages of Brahman Power, Rosalind O'Hanlon focuses on their rise to power between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries, exploring the ways in which some Brahman intellectuals sought to defend the hierarchies of caste against the social changes of the early modern era while others looked for compromise. Drawing on Marathi vernacular sources, O'Hanlon also examines the household, family, and lineage as key sites for Brahman accumulation of skills and cultural capital. This approach also reveals Brahman identity itself as contested, as Brahman subcastes competed with each other not only for service positions and state patronage but also to define who could actually be considered a Brahman, and of what kind. This focus on Brahman social history is novel, in that most historians focus on Brahman power as emerging out of their religious prestige and dominance of intellectual and literary cultures. The emphasis on Brahman identity itself as complex and internally contested also helps to avoid essentializing Brahman power as always and everywhere the same. Autorid: Rosalind O'Hanlon

State University of New York Press In Search of Identity: The Ongoing Crisis of Israeli Society
GTIN: 9798855803198 Raamatud
"Describes and analyzes the main divisions within Israel's heterogenous society"-- Describes and analyzes the main divisions within Israel's heterogenous society. In November 2022, Israeli citizens went to the polls to elect their representatives to the legislature, the Knesset, for the fifth time in less than four years. This was the culmination of a political crisis that began in November 2018 when Avigdor Lieberman resigned from his position as minister of defense after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu refused to approve a significant military move in the Gaza Strip. Since then, Israel has been caught in a political whirlwind. In Search of Identity seeks to find out the nature of the crisis in Israel by analyzing the main rifts in Israeli society. It describes and analyzes the main splits within Israel's heterogenous society, arguing these divisions have social, ideological, and political consequences, the most important being a lack of common national interests and vision. The goal herein is to present a society and country that has long been searching for identity, not only geographically but also in terms of moral values, ethics, and integrity. Autorid: Gadi Hitman

State University of New York Press Politics of Not Speaking
GTIN: 9798855801132 Raamatud
In contrast to the common understanding of politics as a domain of speaking, reveals an alternative tradition where the spoken word fails, collapses, breaks (i.e., a politics of not speaking).According to a common conception, modern politics is based on speaking, on discussion and rational argumentation-on "logos." In contrast, The Politics of Not Speaking argues that politics is based not on speaking but on the suspension of conversation, on the break of rational discourse, on "logoclasm"-on politics of not speaking. Elad Lapidot presents the notion of politics as logoclasm through readings of five canonic thinkers of the twentieth century: Carl Schmitt, Martin Heidegger, Frantz Fanon, Gayatri Spivak, and Jacques Derrida. Tracing the development of the politics of not speaking from the 1930s to the 1990s, he shows how the notion of logoclasm, the rupture of rational discussion, explains key notions in modern politics, such as sovereignty, law, the state, violence, war, race, colonialism, decolonization, and boycott, and sheds light on current debates concerning the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement and the Gaza war. State University of New York Press Gadamer on Art and Aesthetic Experience: Rethinking Hermeneutical Aesthetics Today
GTIN: 9798855800951 Raamatud
Original essays on Hans-Georg Gadamer's hermeneutical aesthetics and philosophy of art, written by some of the most important authors in this field, disclosing the possibility of a renewed understanding of Gadamer's thinking in the context of current aesthetic debates.Hans-Georg Gadamer was one of the greatest intellectual figures of the twentieth century. As a philosopher trained in phenomenology, he established philosophical hermeneutics as one of the leading traditions of contemporary philosophy and opened new paths for philosophical reflection. Within the many dimensions of Gadamer's vast, complex, and multifaceted thinking, a special role is played by the question concerning the relevance of the various arts and the centrality of aesthetic experience in human life. Despite being one of the most relevant voices of twentieth-century philosophy, Gadamer's hermeneutics has at times been overlooked in contemporary philosophical debates. The firm conviction at the basis of this volume is that Gadamer's thought is still relevant today, especially regarding aesthetic questions concerning the persistent meaning and truth of art in the age of what he called "the shadow of nihilism" and in the age of the so-called "end of art." In contrast to the claim that Gadamer's philosophy is "anti-modern," or allegedly "out of date" in comparison to other philosophical approaches to aesthetic questions, Gadamer on Art and Aesthetic Experience aims to show that a renewed and critical confrontation with Gadamer's aesthetic thinking can offer stimulating and penetrating insights to understand the role of art in contemporary society in all its transformations and its challenging manifestations. State University of New York Press Unimportant Clerks: The New York School Poets and the Culture of Bureaucracy
GTIN: 9798855803341 Raamatud
Examines the ambivalent, often critical relationship of the New York School poets to bureaucratic culture and the conditions of work.Unimportant Clerks identifies a central tension in the writing of the New York School poets: at times their poetry replicates the ideology of bureaucracy while at others—and more persistently—it repudiates related principles of efficiency, routine, and regimentation. Frank O'Hara, John Ashberry, Barbara Guest, James Schuyler, and Eileen Myles each had a clerical or secretarial job at the start of their professional careers. Heirs to Melville's Bartleby and antecedents of our own era of "quiet quitting," they by necessity channeled their creativity into everyday practices of refusing work. Drawing on a range of anti-work traditions, movements, and theories, Unimportant Clerks shows how their poetry reflects and contests a midcentury administrative ethos, anticipating contemporary critiques of precarity and the demands of office work. State University of New York Press Witness as Educator: Reading W. G. Sebald, Aimé Césaire, and Walt Whitman
GTIN: 9798855803495 Raamatud
Illuminates the power in bearing witness as an ethical orientation toward the world and its people. In The Witness as Educator, David T. Hansen examines the idea of bearing witness. He shows how it constitutes an ethical orientation that heeds human yearnings for justice, beauty, and meaning. He engages the work of three exemplary witnesses: W. G. Sebald, Aimé Césaire, and Walt Whitman. Sebald powerfully confronts the human costs of the violence of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Césaire evokes a creative Black consciousness in the face of European colonialism and attests to this outlook's joyous and painful development. Whitman's witness to American life, alongside his poignant testimony about caring for wounded soldiers during the American Civil War, speaks to a hope deeper than hope for the prospects of democracy. Hansen shows how these witnesses did not "choose" to write about their respective themes. They had to. The circumstances of their lives and the events of their time summoned them to bear witness. Hansen addresses how their efforts, supplemented by those of other witnesses whose testimony he incorporates, hold considerable educational promise in a world marked by continued misunderstanding and discord and yet also by great possibility. State University of New York Press Politeia: New Readings in the History of Philosophy
GTIN: 9798855803013 Raamatud
Innovative readings and creative reinterpretations of significant works in the field of ancient philosophy. In classical Greece, the word politeia in its largest sense meant the citizens' engagement with the shared project that is the lived life of their polis, city, civic society. Ancient philosophers, poets, historians, and orators constantly reflected on what this shared project should be and how citizens could participate in it. The chapters in this collection, inspired by the work of Anthony Preus, examine some of the products of their reflections, both the written works themselves and the variety of comparative contexts into which they can be put, from the Greeks' neighboring Asian polities to contemporary philosophical engagements with similar issues. The essays in Politeia hope to inspire readers to think about their own lives in conversation with the lives of the many communities to which we belong—to not only demonstrate the idea of politeia but to bring to life politeia's connection of the individual to the collective, something that seems to be of central importance in a world of division and to be the beating heart of the discipline of philosophy. State University of New York Press Ethnic Studies and Youth Literature: A Critical Reader
GTIN: 9798855802986 Raamatud
Brings together scholars and practitioners to present an ethnic studies framework for studying and teaching youth literature. For decades, youth literature has been reckoning with its role in systemic racism and oppression. In this landmark edited volume, Marilisa Jiménez García and Sonia Alejandra Rodríguez assemble a cadre of well-known women of color scholars and practitioners to make a case for ethnic studies as a path for pursuing racial justice in the field. Ethnic studies, they argue, demands that we go beyond seeing race, ethnicity, culture, and diversity as questions of identity and difference. Instead, it shows us how marginalized positionalities create epistemologies that shape our understanding of age, craft, genre, and knowledge production. Multidisciplinary and intersectional in its approach, Ethnic Studies and Youth Literature analyzes US imperialism through the lens of youth literature and vice versa, shedding light on the roots of our current culture wars and curriculum battles. State University of New York Press Haunting the World: Essays on Film After Perkins and Cavell
GTIN: 9798855803105 Raamatud
Argues that the experience of the ordinary film viewer and the investigations of the film scholar or film philosopher are not necessarily so far apart. In Haunting the World, Dominic Lash tries to show that taking films seriously in no way interferes with the pleasure we get from watching them. The book draws its title from the philosopher Stanley Cavell, who saw "haunting the world" as something we are all prone to and who claimed that cinema's relationship with this tendency is both an "importance" and a "danger" of film. Specifically, Lash proposes that the work of Cavell and of the critic and scholar V. F. Perkins have valuable lessons to offer contemporary film studies, some of which are in danger of being neglected. Written in a lively and approachable style that makes philosophical ideas accessible without simplifying them, the book argues that film theory risks going awry when it dismisses or underestimates the experience of the ordinary film viewer. Haunting the World offers fresh accounts of fundamental topics, including description, experience, and agency, and examines in detail important films by Ildikó Enyedi, Paul Thomas Anderson, Ridley Scott, Werner Herzog, Andrei Tarkovsky, Kelly Reichardt, and more. State University of New York Press Animist Poetics: Ancestral Trauma and Regeneration in African Literature
GTIN: 9798855803259 Raamatud
Argues that African literature conceptualizes trauma and regeneration as a more-than-human process, offering an animist revision of psychoanalysis.Psychoanalytic trauma theory largely disregards African perspectives. Postcolonial criticism often filters these perspectives through a secular humanist lens. Examining how African literature uses animism to address the traumas of colonization, Animist Poetics offers a new understanding of the postcolonial condition. From an animist viewpoint, the self is not an individual but rather a regenerative process linking the living, the dead, and their ecosystems. Looking at poetry, fiction, drama, and visual art—including archival manuscripts by Wole Soyinka and Yvonne Vera—Ryan Topper argues that African literature reinvents these Indigenous ecologies in uniquely modern ways. Animist Poetics takes Indigenous—and literary—knowledge seriously, rethinking the foundations of psychoanalysis and charting new theoretical paths in posthumanism, the environmental humanities, new materialism, biopolitics, and memory studies. "Rethinks the status of bodies in a field that is meant to heal the mind and how institutions can shape the drama of psychiatric education"-- Provided by publisher. Rethinks the status of bodies in a field that is meant to heal the mind and how institutions can shape the drama of psychiatric education. The Education of a Psychiatrist offers a fresh engagement with the challenges of learning a profession and building a practice in hospital settings often resistant to care. With astute analysis of works by both clinicians and critics of the field, such as Oliver Sacks and Michel Foucault, Sheila Harms reflects on the role of myths of endurance in education and the more promising possibilities of an ethical turn toward personal transformation, precisely as an educator. Working across the humanities and medical education and drawing on her own experiences in Canada and Uganda, Harms shows why relations of concern, vulnerability, and dependency must become urgent grounds for psychiatric practice. State University of New York Press Shaping Students of Color from Preschool to Graduate School: The Impact of Families on Education
GTIN: 9798855803693 Raamatud
"Illuminates how family-student interactions enhance the educational achievement of students of color/first-generation academics and applies these lessons to institutional goals"-- Provided by publisher. Illuminates how family-student interactions enhance the educational achievement of students of color/first-generation academics and applies these lessons to institutional goals.Shaping Students of Color from Preschool to Graduate School argues that family socialization and parent involvement in education influence paths to graduate school. Based on personal interviews with over thirty graduate students of color and first-generation graduate students, the text shows that families and parents use a complex system where cultural knowledge and behavioral modeling socialize children over the life course to promote specific values, including prioritizing education and hard work; building family unity and spirituality; honoring familial and ancestral sacrifices; fostering individual agency and personal autonomy at a young age; resisting gendered and racialized norms; and managing relationships in both personal and professional settings. These stories lay the groundwork for developing an asset-based understanding of what graduate students of color and first-generation graduate students bring to campus. Institutionally, what we learn can continue to build on the unique experiences and strengths of graduate students and enhance connections between personal and familial backgrounds and inclusive educational programming.
