This bright, funny book tells the story of a cliff as it is gradually eroded by the sea, wind, rain and ice. The Science Works series uses cartoon style illustrations and lively narrative text to make key topics in science accessible and engaging. Scorching days, cold nights, pouring rain, stormy winds and pounding waves for thousands of years. It's enough to make even the hardest rocks crack up! In this revised edition from Jacqui Bailey, we follow the story of what happens when a cliff is gradually eroded by the sea, wind, rain and ice. We find out how rocks from a cliff-face eventually become the grains of sand we find on the beach. This book also contains an experiment, more great facts to know, useful websites and an index. Ideal for readers age 6+.
A collection that includes such tales as: In Rye train station a woman impulsively buys the same ticket as the man in front of her. The accidental journey leads her to Berlin. A novel way to run away from home; and, more. A collection of surreal, comic, and mournful graphic stories, traveling across three continents, zooming in on unusual lives and remarkable situations, each tale unknowingly impacting the nextIn Rye train station a woman impulsively buys the same ticket as the man in front of her, the accidental journey leading her to Berlina novel way to run away from home. At Heathrow Airport, a building perpetually busy with people coming and going, a traveler is visited by a memory that refuses to leave. A tray of Singapore rice noodles cooked up in Christchurch takes on a life of its own. A lone letterbox in Britain's only desert is central to a friendship between a traveling chef and a deep-sea diver. An old man realizes that time is running out in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. Elsewhere an out-of-towner meets a crab at a taco stand who seems to know more than any crab has a right to know. The "sound mirrors of Denge" reflect more than noise for one day-tripper. In this radical reinterpretation of the Financial Revolution, Craig Muldrew redefines our understanding of capitalism as a socially constructed set of institutions and beliefs. Financial institutions, including the Bank of England and the stock market, were just one piece of the puzzle. Alongside institutional developments, changes in local credit networks involving better accounting, paper notes and increased mortgaging were even more important. Muldrew argues that, before a society can become capitalist, most of its members have to have some engagement with 'capital' as a thing a form of stored intangible financial value. He shows how previous oral interpersonal credit was transformed into capital through the use of accounting and circulating paper currency, socially supported by changing ideas about the self which stressed individual savings and responsibility. It was only through changes throughout society that the framework for a concept like capitalism could exist and make sense. Autorid: Craig Muldrew

In these highly-candid radio interviews, more than fifty legendary, larger-than-life personalities trade anecdotes about the Golden Age of science fiction. Ray Bradbury, Robert Bloch, Harlan Ellison, Philip K. Dick, Isaac Asimov, Margaret Atwood, Fritz Leiber, Frank Herbert, Frank Kelly Freas, and many more, depict the wild personalities, sparks of contention, and vivid imagination that made science fiction thrive.Today, depictions of aliens, rocket ships, and awe-inspiring, futuristic space operas are everywhere. Why is there so much science fiction, and where did it come from anyway? Radio producer and author Richard Wolinsky has found answers in the Golden Age of science fiction, between 1920 and 1960.Wolinsky and his fellow writers and co-hosts Richard A. Lupoff and Lawrence Davidson, interviewed a veritable whos who of famous (and infamous) science-fiction publishers, pulp magazines, editors, cover artists, and fans. The interviews themselves, which aired on the public radio, Probabilities, span over twenty years, from just before the release of Star Wars through the dawn of Y2K. Probabilities was the home of a vivid cross-section of the early science fiction world, with radio guests offering a wide range of tales, opinions, theory, and gossip. It speaks to how, in the early days, they were free to define science fiction for themselves and push the genre to explore new ideas and new tropes in creative (and sometimes questionable) ways. Space Ships! Ray Guns! Martian Octopods! is ultimately a love letter to fandom. Science fiction wouldnt have survived as a genre if there werent devoted fanatics who wrote fanzines, organized conventions, and built relationships for fandom to flourish.
