Magnetron sputtering is a mature technique for the deposition of thin films, both at laboratory and industrial level. Conceptually, the technique is quite simple and the process can be summarized in a few lines. A gas discharge is ignited by the application of a high voltage between a cathode and an anode. To increase the ionization efficiency of the electrons emitted from the cathode, a magnetic field is generated by a set of magnets placed behind the cathode. The ions present in the plasma, bombard the cathode which results in the ejection or sputtering of atoms. These sputtered atoms condense on the vacuum chamber walls and on the substrate to form a thin film. Behind this apparent simplicity, a complex interplay between different physical and chemical processes is hidden. This is especially the case when a reactive gas is added to the discharge. This book does not discuss all these processes in detail but provides, through a series of images, an overview of them. The short description accompanying the image can serve as a starting point for a more in-depth study.

This book explores the development of ecological awareness in Jeff VanderMeer's New Weird novels, focusing specifically on the Southern Reach (2014-2024) and Borne (2017-2019) series. Examining the New Weird genre as an understudied part of climate fiction, the chapters investigate how these texts' language, content, and form develop unique and fascinating ways in which one can think and live more ecologically. As the first book-length study on VanderMeer's work to contextualize his novels through object-oriented ontology (OOO), an emerging branch of speculative philosophy that investigates how things exist, this work enables a uniquely experimental reading of VanderMeer: one that accentuates how his work unsettles what is perceived as normal and exposes the bounds of human reasoning, as well as how we understand ourselves and our relationships with nonhumans. Dang also engages with interdisciplinarity, situating VanderMeer's work within cultural discourse around the Anthropocene, environmental anthropology, prehistoric archeology, evolutionary biology, and Indigenous studies.

How did women begin wearing pants? Prior to the 1920s it was a rarity to see women in pants in the Western world, but as the silk pajama trouser suit moved from the boudoir to the beach in the early 1920s it cemented the image of the trousered woman.Worn by Jean Harlow and Marlene Dietrich, painted by Raoul Dufy and immortalized in F. Scott Fitzgerald's Tender is the Night, between the two world wars pajamas came to symbolize much more than sleepwear. This book explores how the pajama phenomenon was not only critical to the careers of designers such as Chanel, Patou, Poiret, and Schiaparelli, but how the versatile garment was also bound to the independence of women and influenced culture more broadly.Through meticulous research and never-before-seen images, the authors position pajama fashion in the context of the Golden Age of Travel, the rise of Hollywood, and the changing political climate of the early 20th century, to reveal how the rising trend in sleepwear influenced The American Look, modern sportswear, and the image of the trousered woman.
"This collection follows the extraordinary careers of nine colonial subjects who won seats in high-level parliamentary institutions of the imperial powers that ruled over them. Revealing an unexplored dimension of the complex political organisation of modern empires, the essays show how early imperial constitutions allowed for the emergence of these unexpected members of parliament, asks how their presence was possible, and unveils the reactions across metropolitan circles, local communities and the voters who brought them to office. Unearthing the entanglements between political life in metropolitan and non-European societies, it illuminates the ambiguous zones, the margins for negotiation, and the emerging forms of leadership in colonial societies. From a Hispanicised Inca nobleman, to recently emancipated slaves and African colonial subjects, in linking these individuals and their political careers together, Unexpected Voices in Imperial Parliaments argues that the political organisation of modern empires incorporated the voices of the colonised and the non-European, in an ambiguous relationship that led to a widening of political participation and action throughout the imperial world. In doing so, this book offers a comprehensive but nuanced reassessment of the making and unmaking of modern empires"-- This collection follows the extraordinary careers of nine colonial subjects who won seats in high-level parliamentary institutions of the imperial powers that ruled over them.
