The Matilda Mk II tank, was an infantry tank used by the British Army during the Second World War. This tank was famous for its heavy armour and its ability to resist enemy attacks, especially in the early stages of the conflict. In fact, its armour made it virtually invulnerable to the anti-tank guns of the time. On the other hand, its speed and firepower were limited compared to the enemy tanks. It was armed with a 2-pound (40 mm) main gun and a coaxial machine gun. For all these characteristics, the British Matilda tank was nicknamed "the Queen of the Desert"!

The M4 Sherman was the primary tank of the U.S. Army, first deployed in February 1942 as an answer to the advancements in armored warfare introduced by the German Wehrmacht in Europe. It was designed to quickly form large, mobile armored units and came fitted with a 75 mm cannon (which was progressively upgraded) along with two machine guns. The Sherman played a crucial role throughout World War II and later in the Korean War. Although early models were somewhat vulnerable, especially prone to catching fire, it ultimately had one of the highest survival rates among tanks in the war. With close to 50,000 units produced across 19 different models, the M4 Sherman became one of the most widely manufactured tanks of World War II, a record it shares with the legendary Soviet T-34.
Considered one of the most significant tanks of World War II, the Sherman also soon became the backbone of the British armored forces. After the defeats suffered in Africa by British troops in 1942, President Roosevelt pledged to provide sufficient numbers of tanks to the British ally. By the end of the conflict, the Sherman was mainly used as a medium tank, recovery vehicle and in various specialized roles. In this second volume, we will focus on Shermans in service with British, Commonwealth, and also Polish, French, and Russian forces. However, the many specialized variants, such as cranes, engineer vehicles, self-propelled artillery vehicles, or tank destroyers, based on the Sherman chassis, will not be covered. Instead, these will be the subject of the third and final volume devoted to the Sherman dossier!
The Crusader tank-tank (Mk.I, Mk.II and Mk.III) was perhaps the most typical and well-known military vehicle employed by Britain during the Second World War. Armed with a 57mm cannon, it was equipped with a very powerful and reliable engine, well combined with the Christie suspension, which allowed for higher speeds, also thanks to its low weight (which was at the expense of protection) especially on flat terrain such as the North African landscape. The Crusader Mk.III was the most produced fighter and by 1939, 65 examples had already been built for successful combat in North Africa, in the early part of the Libyan War.
Originally designed as a medium tank for direct combat, the Sherman tank became an excellent foundation for numerous specialized variants due to its durability, reliability, and adaptability. It was especially suited for roles in military engineering, battlefield recovery, and support operations. Thanks to its versatility, the Sherman evolved into a "Swiss Army knife" of wartime vehicles, capable of meeting diverse operational needs. These specialized versions played a crucial role in many missions, often working discreetly.
At the dawn of the Second World War, the French war industry was one of the most advanced in Europe, heir to a technical and military tradition rooted in the successes of the Great War However, behind the apparent modernity of its arsenals, France was building armoured vehicles that still reflected the defensive and fragmented mentality of the military doctrine of the time.It was in this context that two of the most emblematic and, at the same time, controversial light tanks of the Armée de Terre were born: the Renault R35 and the Hotchkiss H35.Two vehicles that were twins in design and use, symbols of an army that, while seeking to innovate, remained trapped between the past and the future of mechanised warfare.
