Sie sei "seminarium rei publicae", also die Keimzelle des Staates. Ihr galt demzufolge ein selbstverständliches öffentliches Interesse. Diese Arbeit befasst sich mit der Bedeutung der Familie für den Staat und vor allem mit der Frage, inwiefern Kaiser Augustus, mit Hilfe seiner Ehegesetzgebung, die "patria potestas" der römischen Familienväter minimiert beziehungsweise außer Kraft gesetzt hat.§§Schwerpunktmäßig sollen hier die Beschlüsse der "lex Iulia de maritandis ordinibus" vorgestellt und analysiert werden. Ein Problem der Authentizität dieses Gesetzes ergibt sich daraus, dass der Gesetzestext nicht in geschlossener Form überliefert ist, er musste hingegen aus verschiedenen literarischen Quellengattungen, sowie epigraphischem Material rekonstruiert werden.
