Does climate change cause conflict? Did it cause the Syrian uprising? Some policymakers and academics have made this claim, but is it true? This study presents a new conceptual framework to evaluate this claim. Contributing to scholarship in the fields of critical security, environmental security, human security, and Arab politics, Marwa Daoudy prioritizes non-Western and marginalized perspectives to make sense of Syria's place in this international debate. Designing an innovative multidisciplinary framework and applying it to the Syrian case, Daoudy uses extensive field research and her own personal background as a Syrian scholar to present primary interviews with Syrian government officials and citizens, as well as the research of domestic Syrian experts, to provide a unique insight into Syria's environmental, economic and social vulnerabilities leading up to the 2011 uprising. Policymakers, academics and the media have claimed that climate change causes conflicts. This study presents an innovative framework to evaluate this theory, asking whether climate change caused the conflict in Syria. Its argument and findings are essential for practitioners and scholars of climate change, security, and Middle Eastern politics. Autorid: Marwa Daoudy
Letters from a Stoic, include the complete surviving collection of 124 letters that Seneca the Younger wrote at the end of his life. They were written during his retirement, after he had worked for the Emperor Nero for more than ten years. They are addressed to Lucilius, the then procurator of Sicily, who is known only through Seneca's writings. The letters focus on many traditional themes of Stoic philosophy such as the contempt of death, the stout-heartedness of the sage, and virtue as the supreme good.Regardless of how Seneca and Lucilius actually corresponded, it is clear that Seneca crafted the letters with a broad readership in mind. The letters often begin with an observation on daily life, and then proceed to an issue or principle abstracted from that observation. The result is like a diary, or handbook of philosophical meditations. Seneca's letters are focused on the inner-life, and the joy that comes from wisdom. He emphasizes the Stoic theme that virtue is the only true good and vice the only true evil. This case laminate collector's edition includes a Victorian inspired dust-jacket.
All it takes is just one look.AdakAfter a series of relationships where I've been made to feel inadequate because of my asexuality, I've made the sole focus of my life my coaching career. I love hockey - the chill of the ice, the fast paced, high stress game. I love the fans and the atmosphere. The energy. Now that I'm coaching in the NHL, I feel a sense of serenity and comfort with life. All that's left is to get my team to The Stanley Cup.A series of unfortunate injuries has riddled the Bobcats into a serious funk. The frustration that my boys feel echoes through me and after one of the most horrible plays I've ever witnessed, I turn my back on the ice - only to catch his eyes. Suddenly, I know what I've been missing. In a sea of over 15,000 faces, I found the one I've been waiting my entire life for. There's sadness in his eyes that's only overcome with the fear behind it. Nothing will stop me from making Oren mine and giving him the life and love he deserves. Nothing.OrenMy life is shit. I'm the pariah of my family for hell knows why. All I want is to get away. But I tried once - at nineteen, I ran and my father with his buddies on the police force dragged me home. I've since been dragged down into submission. But then I meet his eyes and everything inside me just... shifts. Adak takes a chance on me and I think that perhaps my father has finally met a wall he can't barrel through to keep control. That is, until he starts blasting his hate everywhere.I wouldn't blame Adak if he chooses to leave. This is his career on the line. His image and reputation. Am I worth it?***This is a LGBT+ story with content not intended for those under 18 years of age due to graphic scenes and situations.
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • REESE'S BOOK CLUB X HELLO SUNSHINE BOOK PICK • From a leading voice on racial justice, an eye-opening account of growing up Black, Christian, and female that exposes how white America's love affair with "diversity" so often falls short of its ideals. "Austin Channing Brown introduces herself as a master memoirist. This book will break open hearts and minds."-Glennon Doyle, #1 New York Times bestselling author of UntamedAustin Channing Brown's first encounter with a racialized America came at age seven, when she discovered her parents named her Austin to deceive future employers into thinking she was a white man. Growing up in majority-white schools and churches, Austin writes, "I had to learn what it means to love blackness," a journey that led to a lifetime spent navigating America's racial divide as a writer, speaker, and expert helping organizations practice genuine inclusion. In a time when nearly every institution (schools, churches, universities, businesses) claims to value diversity in its mission statement, Austin writes in breathtaking detail about her journey to self-worth and the pitfalls that kill our attempts at racial justice. Her stories bear witness to the complexity of America's social fabric-from Black Cleveland neighborhoods to private schools in the middle-class suburbs, from prison walls to the boardrooms at majority-white organizations. For readers who have engaged with America's legacy on race through the writing of Ta-Nehisi Coates and Michael Eric Dyson, I'm Still Here is an illuminating look at how white, middle-class, Evangelicalism has participated in an era of rising racial hostility, inviting the reader to confront apathy, recognize God's ongoing work in the world, and discover how blackness-if we let it-can save us all.
