Central Anatolia (Iç Anadolu Bölgesi) is one of the seven geographical regions of Turkey, extending from Sivas in the east to Eskisehir in the west and from Çankiri in the north to Karaman in the south. The region has a rich history of cultural diversity, with people of various cultures and a wide range of languages shaping its identity. However, this diversity is currently threatened, and it is only in recent years that research has begun to focus on the description and documentation of this heritage. This volume combines linguistic descriptions, ethnographic studies, and sociolinguistic research of ethnolinguistic communities residing in Central Anatolia.¿

Bernhard Jülg dürfte heute nur noch einigen Linguisten als Herausgeber von J.S. Vaters Bibliographie der Grammatiken und Lexika (1847) und einigen klassischen Philologen als Professor an den Universitäten Lemberg, Krakau und Innsbruck bekannt sein. Berühmt war er jedoch als Pionier der Mongolistik. Nachdem er 1847 sein Doktorat von der Universität Kiel für eine Skizze der kalmükischen Grammatik erhalten hatte und damit wohl der erste Doktor in diesem Fach überhaupt war, wollte I.J. Schmidt (1779-1847), der Begründer der Mongolistik in Europa, Jülg zu seinem Nachfolger an der Petersburger Akademie der Wissenschaften machen, was sein vorzeitiger Tod aber verhinderte. Das Kalmükische blieb indes für Jülg ein Leben lang sein Hauptinteresse, er sammelte und kopierte kalmükische Manuskripte und veröffentlichte die Erzählungszyklen Arji Borji und Siddhi-Kür in mongolischer bzw. kalmükischer Version mit deutscher Übersetzung. Für diese Publikation mussten mongolische und kalmükische Schrifttypen geschnitten werden, für deren Finanzierung Jülg die Österreichische Akademie und einen Innsbrucker Buchhändler gewinnen konnte. In Jülgs Korrespondenz mit dem berühmten Sprachwissenschaftler Hans Conon von der Gabelentz lässt sich die Lebensgeschichte dieses unermüdlichen Gelehrten beispielhaft nachvollziehen und zugleich spiegelt sie die Entwicklung der Sprachstudien im Deutschland des 19. Jahrhunderts wider.
