The University of Chicago Press Of Bridges: A Poetic and Philosophical Account
GTIN: 9780226826493 Raamatud
Offers a philosophical history of bridges—both literal bridges and their symbolic counterparts—and the acts of cultural connection they embody. “Always,” wrote Philip Larkin, “it is by bridges that we live.” Bridges represent our aspirations to connect, to soar across divides. And it is the unfinished business of these aspirations that makes bridges such stirring sights, especially when they are marvels of ingenuity. A rich compendium of myths, superstitions, and literary and ideological figurations, Of Bridges organizes a poetic and philosophical history of bridges into nine thematic clusters. Leaping in lucid prose between distant times and places, Thomas Harrison questions why bridges are built and where they lead. He probes links forged by religion between life’s transience and eternity as well as the consolidating ties of music, illustrated by the case of the blues. He investigates bridges in poetry, as flash points in war, and the megabridges of our globalized world. He illuminates real and symbolic crossings facing migrants each day and the affective connections that make persons and societies cohere. In readings of literature, film, philosophy, and art, Harrison engages in a profound reflection on how bridges form and transform cultural communities. Of Bridges is a mesmerizing, vertiginous tale of bridges both visible and invisible, both lived and imagined. Autorid: Thomas Harrison

Key Publishing Ltd Britain's Guided Weapons
GTIN: 9781802823233 Raamatud
Britain has been at the forefront of weapons technology since the industrial revolution began and, with the Brennan wire-guided torpedo, pioneered guided weapons. World War One saw several developments, but it was during World War Two that Britain’s scientists laid the foundations for a guided weapons industry that continues to this day. Ultimately, the early guided weapons gave Britain’s armed forces valuable experience in operating the weapons. Sea Vixens, Javelins and Lightnings were armed with Firestreak and Red Top, while Vulcans and Victors carried Blue Steel, the UK’s nuclear deterrent. The Army fielded weapons such as Thunderbird, Rapier, Corporal and Lance. Navy submarines carried Polaris and Trident, while surface ships had Sea Dart, Sea Wolf, Exocet and Harpoon. From this solid foundation, the aerospace companies merged and collaborated, with lessons learned from the earlier weapons paving the way for a new generation of weapons: Skyflash, Meteor, ASRAAM, Brimstone and Storm Shadow arm the Tornado, Typhoon and Lightning; Sea Viper and Sea Ceptor protect the Navy; and Sky Sword defends the Army. With over 140 images, this book relates the history of these weapons and how Britain operates some of the finest guided weapons available today. Firefly Books Ltd Capturing Motion: My Life in High Speed Nature Photography
GTIN: 9780228102724 Raamatud
In this fascinating book Stephen Dalton takes the reader on a journey, recounting how he started in photography and how he became fascinated with the idea of photographing insects and birds in flight. When Dalton started to combine his interests in nature and photography, no photographer had succeeded in capturing on film a focused image of an animal in midair. There were no digital cameras, no high-speed film, only primitive flash units powered by a heavy car battery. Color film took a week or more to be sent away and processed, too late for Dalton to make adjustments to his camera and flash set-up. There were also no publications to learn from. Dalton describes how persistence, hard work and sheer faith that it could be done pushed him to experiment with a variety of methods. Two years of repeated attempts, an understanding of flight mechanics and insight into the art of photography brought success: he captured a sharply focused image of a barn owl leaving its nest. Dalton had created the art of motion photography. Capturing Motion: My Life in High Speed Nature Photography is part memoir, part adventure story and part scientific explanation, illustrated throughout with Dalton's pioneering photographs. Dalton explains how the photographic equipment of the time worked and takes the reader on his journeys into the English countryside in the 1960s as he searched for subjects. Each attempt could be long and frustrating but success finally came with his image of a barn owl in flight: We employed two cameras set-up side by side in the hide, one containing color film that had to be sent away to Kodak for processing, which took a week, while the other was loaded with black and white film. When the owl took off both cameras recorded two almost identical images. More often than not the negatives revealed that at least one of the flash heads failed to fire, ruining the chance of obtaining the lighting so carefully planned. Even when we managed to obtain an image, the chances were that the wings were not in an attractive position. By now, after three weeks our patience was running thin. Although we had managed to obtain a few indifferent pictures, none of them did justice to the bird and the setting. I decided to struggle on for a few more days. A couple of evenings had passed when out of the blue everything jelled - next morning from out of the developing tank I withdrew a strip of dripping negatives that held the image that had been in my mind's eye for weeks - all four flash lamps had fired and the owl's wings were perfect. Capturing Motion follows the incredible journey of a highly skilled and creative nature photographer inventing an entirely new method. All photographers will enjoy reading about the determination and skill that went into creating a method they use every day in their craft. Autorid: Stephen Dalton

HarperCollins Publishers Inc Defending Alice: A Novel of Love and Race in the Roaring Twenties
GTIN: 9780063115460 Raamatud
Roaring Twenties New York society is set ablaze when a working-class black woman marries the son of a wealthy, prominent family and makes international headlines after he sues for annulment accusing her of hiding her “Negro blood.” 60,000 first printing. In a novel based on a real-life case, 1920s New York society is set ablaze when Alice Jones, a working-class woman with at least one black parent, marries Leonard "Kip" Rhinelander, the son of a wealthy, prominent family, who makes international headlines after he sues for annulment, accusing her of hiding her "Negro blood." “Gripping courtroom drama and social commentary . . . the story flows well . . . (the author is] masterful in building suspense.”—Kirkus ReviewsSet in 1920s New York, an addictively readable, thoroughly entertaining historical novel involving sex and secrets, race and redemption, and power and privilege—based on a sensational real-life case that made international headlines—in which the marriage between a working-class black woman and the scion of one of America’s most powerful white families ends in a scandalous annulment lawsuit. When Alice Jones, a blue-color woman with at least one Black parent marries Leonard “Kip” Rhinelander, the son of one of New York’s most prominent society families, the scandal rocks high society—and eventually sets the city afire when Kip later sues for an annulment, accusing Alice of having hidden her “Negro blood” and intentionally deceiving him that she was white. While New York society in the Roaring Twenties witnessed more than a few scandals, the real-life Rhinelander case set tongues wagging and became perhaps the most examined interracial relationship in American history. In Defending Alice, Richard Stratton reimagines this remarkable story, from the couple’s courtship through their controversial marriage to their shocking divorce trial and its aftermath. Chronicled by Alice’s attorney, brilliant trial lawyer Lee Parsons Davis, and told in flashbacks and entries from Alice and Kip’s fictional personal diaries, this epic page-turner vividly brings to life the New York of a century ago—a world seemingly far removed yet tragically familiar to our own.Stratton brilliantly evokes this dazzling era in all its glamour and excess, and in retelling the Rhinelander story, explores issues of sex, race, class, prejudice, and justice that are as relevant today as they were a century ago when this headline-making trial took place. This is a dark romance/horror erotica. Please check the trigger warnings at the beginning of the book before you start by following the link to my website. This story is dark, with horror and gore, extremely explicit content, and unsettling situations/flashbacks. Readers are warned to read at their own risk. (18+ Only)Fifteen years locked in Sacred Heights Asylum for brutally butchering my parents, and they actually believe I'm cured. Fucking fixed. But I wasn't-just waiting, biding my time, preparing to unleash the chaos I've perfected for years on a world that made me this way. But just before my release, she walks in-Raven. A new student therapist. Pure. Innocent. The exact opposite of the monster lurking inside me. She's a light, and I'm a hungry shadow, ready to swallow her whole. Her piercing blue eyes and delicate freckled kitten nose ignite something dark in me, something more than just an obsession. It's a craving. Watching her from afar isn't enough anymore-I need her. So I take her. I drag her into the nightmare of my mind, where terror and lust bleed together. She thinks she can heal me. She thinks she can manipulate me. They always do, but soon she'll understand the truth-my truth. She'll see the world through my eyes, drenched in blood and madness. I don't just want to ruin her; I want her to notice the rot hiding beneath the surface, to feel the sharp edges of reality slice through her delusions. Life is cruelty, wrapped in pretty fucking packaging, and I'll be the one to rip it open for her. She'll watch as I axe my vengeance into the flesh of those who took everything from me, and by then, she'll know there's no escape. Not from me. Not from the hell I'm about to rain down on them all.But as time seems to pass, secrets are unravelled and we both become trapped in a sinister web, sinking into a darkness that runs far deeper than I ever imagined.

From celebrated business school professor and author of Edge, a research-backed framework for honing and harnessing your intuition to make the right decisions and attain greater levels of achievement. What sets the most successful people apart? You may think that the correct answer is hard work (and it’s certainly part of it), but in her interviews of the most accomplished individuals—from entrepreneurs and investors to Olympic athletes and Pulitzer Prize winners—Distinguished Professor of Management Laura Huang discovered that what they called their gut feel, the product of their intuition, played the most important role.We all have intuition, our brain's intelligent synthesis of external data and the entirety of our personal experiences. As such, it draws from what we already know and what we didn’t even realize we knew. This culminates in a gut feel that manifests as a eureka moment, a Spidey sense, or a jolt that changes how we see things and compels us to act. Most people experience these flashes of clarity passively, as random occurrences that come out of the blue.In You Already Know, Laura Huang scientifically breaks down what happens during the intuiting process and details the personified, physical, emotional, and cognitive components of the gut feel that results. Along the way, she provides valuable exercises to help you recognize, understand, and strengthen your intuition. Purposeful practice enables you to: take it from passive and accidental to active and intentional develop it to deliver increasingly reliable signals heighten your own sensitivity to the signals it sends Drawing on Huang’s pioneering research on individual judgments and decision-making, organizational psychology, and behavioral economics, as well as hundreds of interviews,You Already Knowoffers a highly practical model that equips you to leverage your most powerful and underutilized resource to make better decisions, take swift action, and accomplish your most ambitious goals. As the external world gets ever noisier, often, the smartest thing you can do is turn your focus inward and trust your gut to guide you in the right direction.

Oxford University Press Inc Tornado Alley
GTIN: 9780195307115 Raamatud
Tornadoes are the most violent, magnificent, and utterly unpredictable storms on earth, reaching estimated wind speeds of 300 mph and leaving swathes of destruction in their wake. In Tornado Alley, Howard Bluestein draws on two decades of experience chasing and photographing tornadoes across the American Plains to present a historical account of the study of tornadoes and the great thunderstorms that spawn them. A century ago, tornado warnings were so unreliable that they usually went unreported. Today, despite cutting-edge Doppler radar technology and computer simulation, these storms remain remarkably difficult to study. Leading scientists still conduct much of their research from the inside of a speeding truck, and often contend with jammed cameras, flash floods, and windshields smashed by hailstones and flying debris. Using over a hundred diagrams, models, and his own spectacular color photographs, Bluestein documents the exhilaration of hair-raising encounters with as many as nine tornadoes in one day, as well as the crushing disappointment of failed expeditions and ruined equipment. Most of all, he recreates the sense of beauty, mystery, and power felt by the scientists who risk their lives to study violent storms. For scientists, amateur weather enthusiasts, or anyone who's ever been intrigued or terrified by a darkening sky, Tornado Alley provides not only a history of tornado research but a vivid look into the origin and effects of nature's most dramatic phenomena.
