Following the sad death of Stuart Baker, the creator of Rail Atlas Great Britain and Ireland, in 2020, we were fortunate that another fine railway cartographer, Joe Brown, agreed to complete the work that Stuart had begun, to revise what became the 15th edition. However, the railway network of Great Britain and Ireland is always changing and never static and revised editions of this atlas are required on a regular basis; the rebuilding of the line from Oxford towards Cambridge and the reinstatement of the Foynes branch in Ireland being examples of some of the additions to this new edition.Fortunately, Joe Brown has agreed to take on this work and this 16th edition will be the first one to be fully edited and revised by him. As with all the previous editions, the Atlas has been fully revised and updated whilst retaining the convenient format of mapping where each page overlaps with that on adjoining pages to make it easier to follow a long-distance route. Where appropriate, additional detailed inset maps have been drawn to show the complex railway developments in metropolitan areas such as Nottingham and Manchester. While some minor changes to the layout have been made, Rail Atlas Great Britain and Ireland remains true to the standards of clarity and accuracy which were the hallmarks of its creator that have made the Atlas an essential work of reference for both railway professionals and enthusiasts since it was first published in the 1970s. Since it was first published in 2007, The Southern Way has become the definitive journal on the history and heritage of the Southern Railway and the Southern Region of British Railways. The first two of the four issues scheduled for 2025, numbers 68 and 69, will be released in January and May. Two more issues and a Southern Way Special are due in the second half of the year. Each volume contains a mixture of articles and photo features on various aspects of the SR including rolling stock, infrastructure, operations and personalities. The Southern Way remains essential reading for all who interested in the SR and those modelling it.As this catalogue went to press not all the content had been finalised but among articles confirmed for inclusion are a survey of Southern stations in East Dorset, Wiltshire, West Hampshire and the Isle of Wight and a feature on the Guildford-Cranleigh-Christ's Hospital branch. By comparison with Civil Aircraft Markings, with which it shares an annual Spring publication date, Military Aircraft Markings, is virtually the new kid on the block even though it has a continuous record of annual publication since the 1970s. Military Aircraft Markings has built its own loyal following over all those years and it retains its reputation as the indispensable annual publication for all enthusiasts, historians and students of military aviation. At the heart of Military Aircraft Markings is the most complete listing of all the aircraft of the UK Armed Forces; the Royal Air Force, Royal Navy, Army and associated units. For each entry the military serial, aircraft type, unit/operator and usual base are given. Further listings cover Ireland's military aircraft and historic aircraft in military markings.Other sections of Military Aircraft Markings include American military aircraft based in Europe, overseas military aircraft that may be seen in the UK, unit markings and a unit serial number/letter de-code. Also included are details of the UK's main military air bases, a maintenance unitcross reference section and details of RAF Squadron markings. In addition, the book provides a comprehensive listing of visiting aircraft from overseas air forces that may be seen during the air display season, together with a new full colour photo section. This new 2025 edition of Military Aircraft Markings has been fully revised and updated by one of Britain's leading authorities on military aviation. This remains the must-have companion for all those interested in UK military aviation. Autorid: Stuart Schofield
This is the second book in Crecy's new Railways Remembered series to draw on the work of Blake Paterson who was a career railwayman, a railway enthusiast and an accomplished photographer. At the time these photos were taken, he was working for the Western Region and aware of the great changes to the railway network which were underway. Even before the publication of Dr Beeching's notorious report, he resolved to record in colour as much of the changing railway scene as was possible. He sought innovative angles, and unlike many railway photographers of the era made a particular point of including people, particularly railway employees, in his photos. This photographic journey starts in Kent in the east of the region and travels westwards. The photos have been broadly organised according to the territories of the pre-grouping constituents of the Southern Railway, and latterly BR's Southern Region, starting with the South Eastern & Chatham Railway (SECR), then the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway (LBSCR), and finally the London South Western Railway (LSWR). Interspersed with these companies is coverage of the Isle of Wight railways, whose services were being operated by several small railway companies prior to absorption by the SR.To our knowledge, few if any of these photos have been previously published and they will take those reading this book back to an era which, while well within living memory, depicts a railway environment that has radically changed in subsequent decades. This is a new, revised and fully updated edition of one of our most popular railway atlases. The key to the attraction of this atlas is the ease with which it enables comparisons to be made between today's railway network and that which existed in 1923.The book includes 45 maps from each period alongside a detailed gazetteer and brief introduction. The contemporary maps have all been revised and updated for this new edition. They include information about railway lines that have been closed and converted for other purposes such as walking or cycling routes, or have found a new use as heritage lines, tramway conversions and the like. Other information includes the location of all post-1923 steam sheds and current diesel and electric depots, railway museums and a wide range of modern commercial narrow gauge and miniature railways. The Atlas also provides a list of all stations that have both been opened and closed between the 1923 and the present day as well as those currently under construction. The new edition of this unique publication can be used either for pleasurable browsing or as an aide for more detailed research into how the railway network has changed over a period of close to 100 years. The railways of the Lake District and North Lancashire are characterised by massive contrasts. From north to south, the area is intersected by the West Coast Main Line. Its series of tough grades, including the legendary Shap, presented a challenge for steam locomotives and crews for decades, and also for photographers seeking out new locations to record them at work. Along the way, the major centres of Carlisle, Lancaster and Preston were hives of activity, dealing with all manner of traffic from elsewhere in the country. It was also possible to see a rich variety of motive power at stations and loco sheds. The spectacular Cumbrian Coast line conveyed trains via remote and dramatic scenery bordering the Irish Sea while linking industrial towns built around coal and steel. Branch lines to places like Silloth, Coniston, Windermere and Lakeside tapped into a growing tourist market until most were usurped by the private car as ownership grew. Stations at Blackpool proved a magnet for holidaymakers and day-trippers whilst Morecambe was served by an intriguing early electric service. The corridor connecting Preston to Blackburn, Burnley and beyond relied on a variety of passenger and goods traffic, especially coal. It was also notable for being the last major outpost of BR steam in 1968.All these aspects feature in this new colour album, covering the period from the 1950s to the late 1970s, largely based around previously unpublished images, many of which are held by Online Transport Archive. Mainline and branch views cover freight and passenger workings in the steam, diesel and early electric eras. These are complemented by some remarkable views of industrial operations with a fascinating mix of locomotives in a range of locations. Another wonderfully nostalgic book to complement previous titles in the Railways Remembered series. Autorid: Martin Jenkins, Charles Roberts
The OV-10, the world's first purpose-built counter-insurgency (COIN) aircraft, has had a long and varied career. Primarily employed as a forward air control (FAC) platform, the Bronco was one of the few fixed-wing aircraft flown by the US Air Force (USAF), the US Marine Corps and the US Navy during the Vietnam War. The Bronco made its combat debut in Vietnam with the US Marine Corps in July 1968. The USAF followed shortly thereafter in September 1968, and the US Navy initiated OV-10 operations in Vietnam in April 1969. The US Marine Corps used the OV-10 as a ground-support jack-of-all trades, providing visual reconnaissance, FAC, helicopter escort, CAS, search and rescue, photo-reconnaissance, assisting in the insertion and extraction of Marine reconnaissance teams, and spotting for mortars, artillery and naval gunfire.Following the Vietnam War, the USAF shifted its Bronco focus from jungle warfare in south east Asia to defending against large-scale armoured thrusts in West Germany and South Korea, before retiring its OV-10s in the early 1990s. The loss of two OV-10As over Kuwait was used by those within the US Marine Corps looking to the retire the type as an example of the Bronco's vulnerability over the modern battlefield. In 1994, the US Marine Corps Reserve retired its last OV-10s, bringing an end to the Bronco's US military career.Demilitarised OV-10s have seen extensive employment with civilian agencies in the United States, with NASA using several for numerous flight test programmes, including one of the original YOV-10A prototypes modified for extreme low-speed flight. OV-10Ds were passed on to the US Department of State, which modified the aircraft for use as aerial applications platforms, spraying herbicides on coca and poppy fields in Colombia and Ecuador as part of America's war on illegal drugs. As the US military and other air arms throughout the world address the need for a light attack platform, several companies have put forth designs that draw heavily from the OV-10 - a testament to the type's proven versatility and efficacy in the light attack role.
Hiroshi Takizawa's photographs are the result of a complex process in which the relationship between object, material, image, and their spatial qualities are probed. His series Fingerprinted Objects shows items made from clay that stand out sharply against a dark background yet have an indefinable presence themselves-an amorphous lump without recognizable objecthood steeped in colorful light whose source is equally undetectable. In photographing the images over and over, their vexing, shimmering coloration emerges as a self-generating process. [...] Ultimately, this project is about the perceptual parameters of the human visual apparatus and the extent of our sensory abilities. Can we feel a photograph? Patricia Grzonka In its capacity as a micromuseum, MuseumQuartier Vienna's Sternenpassage highlights artists whose work broadly relates to photography. Each resulting series is presented across five illuminated circular display cases mounted on the walls. Lumen Zine is a miniature catalogue supplementing exhibitions at Sternenpassage.

Speedlink was launched in 1977 as an attempt to arrest the decline in British Rail's wagonload freight business. One of the things that distinguished Speedlink workings from almost all of the freight services that had preceded them was that all the wagons used were air braked. At its peak in the mid 1980s, it carried over 8 million tonnes annually. Despite this, Speedlink was never profitable, and in the run up to railway privatisation the service was abandoned in 1991. This is the second in a four-book series, each one complete in itself, which will provide a comprehensive survey of the whole Speedlink wagon fleet. This volume looks at the types on order in 1977 and delivered subsequently. It will also cover existing stock either fully or partially converted to be compatible on these services and include their former identities. Full coverage of each type is given, particularly livery changes and conversions where appropriate.Wagons produced under 15 Design Codes are covered in this second volume. Among the types included are; 100T Bogie Steel Carriers, 80T Bogie Plate Wagon, 49T Borail Wagon, Flatrol Nuclear Flask Wagon, 32.5T Hopper Coal Wagon, 31T Open Goods Wagon, 12T Pipe Wagon, 31T Plate Wagon, 45T Vanfit and14T Van (Ammunition).Written by wagon expert David Larkin and heavily illustrated throughout, this series is an invaluable source of reference for all those interested in the post steam era on Britain's railways. Those modelling the railway scene from the 1970s to the 1990s will also find these books essential reading. Autorid: David Larkin
When it was originally published,. Hugh Longworth's definitive record of every steam locomotive operated by British Railways from nationalisation until the end of steam traction on the network in 1968, was very much welcomed, as it provided, for the first time in one place, a detailed and accurate source of reference on this important subject. With the book out of print for some time, a new and revised edition was overdue. However, the extent of the revisions, which included the book's many photographs being given more space on the page, and the use of enlarged and enhanced locomotive drawings, greatly increased the size of the work. Rather than attempt to cut or dilute the content, it was decided that instead of publishing one unwieldy and expensive book, a more realistic approach was to present the work in two volumes of roughly similar size. The first of these dealing with the Great Western and LNER locomotives which became part of the BR stock in 1948, was published in 2025. This second volume covers Southern and LMS locos inherited in 1948 and the Standard classes introduced by BR.The entry for each class provides essential information including the size of the cylinders and driving wheels, boiler pressure, wight, the type of locomotive in a class, its place of construction and the date, withdrawl and scrapping dates are given as the details of any renumbering that may have occurred during the BR era. Heavily illustrated throughout, this book and its companion volume will be of great value to all interested in the steam era on British Railways. All classes that were on BR's books in the years post 1948 are covered in the two volumes, and whilst the overwhelming majority of the locos featured are standing gauge, the few narrow gauge locomotives operated by BR are also included. When it was originally published,. Hugh Longworth's definitive record of every steam locomotive operated by British Railways from nationalisation until the end of steam traction on the network in 1968, was very much welcomed, as it provided, for the first time in one place, a detailed and accurate source of reference on this important subject.
