Originally published in 1967, Ngugi's third novel is his best known and most ambitious work. "A Grain of Wheat" portrays several characters in a village whose intertwined lives are transformed by the 1952-1960 Emergency in Kenya. As the action follows the village's arrangements for Uhuru (independence) Day. This is a novel of stories within stories, a narrative interwoven with myth as well as allusions to real-life leaders of the nationalist struggle, including Jomo Kenyatta. At the centre of it all is the reticent Mugo, the village's chosen hero and a man haunted by a terrible secret. As events unfold, compromises are forced, friendships are betrayed and loves are tested.

"The "Panic of 1907," as it was called, is considered the third worst stock market crash in history. Historians say it lasted from January 19, 1906, through November 15, 1907. The market crash was primarily caused by a credit crunch in New York that slowly spread across the country. To try to offset the decline, the U.S. Treasury department bought $35 million worth of government bonds. The Panic of 1907 aims to discuss the drivers of this crash and the major players involved, including F. Augustus Heinzeand his bank, Knickerbocker Trust, as well as what lessons we have learned and can continue to learn from the panic"-- An authoritative "biography" of one of history's great financial crises with enduring lessons about contemporary finance In this newly-revised second edition, offering 50% entirely new material, The Panic of 1907: Heralding a New Era of Finance, Capitalism, and Democracy, delivers a groundbreaking examination of one of the most consequential crises in financial history. Deftly weaving historical evidence, insightful analysis, and compelling narrative, The Panic of 1907 explains how and why a financial panic unfolds, with lessons that can be applied to our understanding of present-day financial and monetary systems. In the book, you'll find: The reasons why, despite today's stronger monetary regime and risk-mitigation tools, our modern institutions are not immune to future crises Explanations about the development of the United States' Federal Reserve System, which was created in 1913 in direct response to the Panic of 1907 An engaging and entertaining account of an innately fascinating period in financial and economic history, with remarkable leaders and a gallery of rogues An indispensable tale that belongs on the shelves of anyone with an interest in American or financial history, The Panic of 1907 is an expert retelling of one of the most important, but least well-known crises of the last 200 years. Economics has the power to make the world a better, happier and safer place: this book shows you how Our world is in a mess. The challenges of climate change, inequality, hunger and a global pandemic mean our way of life seems more imperilled and society more divided than ever; but economics can help! From parenting to organ donation, housing to anti-social behaviour, economics provides the tools we need to fix the biggest issues of today. Far from being a means to predict the stock market or enrich the elite, economics provides a lens through which we can better understand how things work, design clever solutions and create the conditions in which we can all flourish. With a healthy dose of optimism, and packed with stories of economics in everyday situations, Erik Angner demonstrates the methods he and his fellow economists use to help improve our lives and the society in which we live. He shows us that economics can be a powerful force for good, awakening the possibility of a happier, more just and more sustainable world. Autorid: Erik Angner
LONGLISTED FOR THE NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FOR FICTION SELECTED BY THE TELEGRAPH AS ONE OF THE FOUR BEST DEBUTS OF THE YEAR 'A tense, yet tender portrait of a father and son trying to escape life on the margin. Determination and despair collide in this unforgettable debut, with an ending that broke my heart' Douglas Stuart, Booker Prize-winning author of Shuggie Bain Evicted from their trailer on New Year's Eve, Henry and his son, Junior, have been reduced to living out of a pick-up truck. Six months later, things are even more desperate. Henry, barely a year out of prison for selling drugs, is down to his last pocketful of cash, and little remains between him and the street. But hope is on the horizon: today is Junior's birthday, and Henry has a job interview tomorrow. To celebrate, Henry treats Junior to dinner at McDonald's, followed by a night in a real bed at a discount hotel. For a moment, as Junior watches TV and Henry practises for his interview in the bathtub, all seems well. But after Henry has a disastrous altercation in the parking lot and Junior succumbs to a fever, father and son are sent into the night, struggling to hold things together. Each chapter of this deeply emotional and compassionate novel begins with amount of money in Henry's pocket, showing how literally father and son's fortunes can turn on a dime. Can they make it through tomorrow? Praise for Abundance: 'Full of beauty, honesty and unexpected grace.' Gary Shteyngart 'A quest, a page-turner, and above all a love story, Abundance lays bare one father's brutal, tender hustle to care for his son in a winner-takes-all world.' Mia Alvar 'Tender, anxious, angry, and beautiful.' Mark Doten Autorid: Jakob Guanzon
It is true that he has been one of the inner circle of the 'Beats' from the first, but many admirers of his poetry feel that it belongs quite as much to other and older traditions in world literature. One of these is the revival of pure poetry whenever an originalbe it Rimbaud or Whitmanhas broken with current verse conventions to give free rein to the magic of language. Another is that ancient pre-occupation of poetsthe sense of the immediacy of death. Like Villon or Dylan Thomas, Corso lives close to the mystery of death. It is, perhaps, his central theme, on which variations ranging from the terrible to the comic are sounded. But Corso is seldom macabre. A bursting vitality always carries him back to the sensations of the living, though always it is the reality behind the obvious which has caught his eye. How I love to probe life, Corso has written, Thats what poetry is to me, a wondrous prober Its not the metre or measure of a line, a breath; not law music; but the assembly of great eye sounds placed into an inspired measured idea.
