The place of emotion in legal education is rarely discussed or analysed, and we do not have to seek far for the reasons. The difficulty of interdisciplinary research, the technicisation of legal education itself, the view that affect is irrational and antithetical to core western ideals of rationality - all this has made the subject of emotion in legal education invisible. Yet the educational literature on emotion proves how essential it is to student learning and to the professional lives of teachers. This text, the first full-length book study of the subject, seeks to make emotion a central topic of research for legal educators, and restore the power of emotion in our teaching and learning. Part 1 focuses on the contribution that neuroscience can make to legal learning, a theme that is carried through other chapters in the book. Part 2 explores the role of emotion in the working lives of academics and clinical staff, while Part 3 analyses the ways in which emotion can be used in learning and teaching. The book, interdisciplinary and wide-ranging in its reference, breaks new ground in its analysis of the educational lifeworld of situations, communities, actors and interactions in legal education.

Colm Tóibíns personal account of encountering James Baldwins work, published in Baldwins centenary year. Acclaimed Irish novelist Colm Tóibín first read James Baldwin just after turning eighteen. He had completed his first year at an Irish university and was struggling to free himself from a religious upbringing. He had even considered entering a seminary and was searching for literature that would offer illumination and insight. Inspired by the novel Go Tell It on the Mountain, Tóibín found a writer who would be a lifelong companion and exemplar. From On James Baldwin Baldwin was interested in the hidden and dramatic areas in his own being, and was prepared as a writer to explore difficult truths about his own private life. In his fiction, he had to battle for the right of his protagonists to choose or influence their destinies. He knew about guilt and rage and bitter privacies in a way that few of his White novelist contemporaries did. And this was not simply because he was Black and homosexual; the difference arose from the very nature of his talent, from the texture of his sensibility. All art, he wrote, is a kind of confession, more or less oblique. All artists, if they are to survive, are forced, at last, to tell the whole story, to vomit the anguish up. On James Baldwin is a magnificent contemporary authors tribute to one of his most consequential literary progenitors. Autorid: Colm Toibin

For over six hundred years, a medieval manuscript has defeated every attempt to read it. The Voynich Manuscript takes you inside history's most enigmatic book-not to solve it, but to understand why it cannot be solved.Held at Yale's Beinecke Library as MS 408, the Voynich Manuscript is a fifteenth-century vellum codex containing over 240 pages of text in an unknown script, accompanied by illustrations of unidentifiable plants, astronomical diagrams, naked figures in interconnected pools, and massive foldout cosmologies that unfold to reveal structures unlike anything in medieval manuscript tradition.Cryptographers who broke military codes have failed to crack it. Botanists cannot identify its plants. Linguists cannot determine its language. Every decipherment claim in the past century has collapsed under scrutiny. This book strips away a century of speculation to examine what the manuscript actually is:• The Physical Object - vellum preparation, quire structure, binding evidence, and what radiocarbon dating does and does not prove• The Unreadable Script - glyph inventory, statistical properties, positional behavior, and why the text resists every known form of analysis• The Plant Illustrations - botanical plausibility, composite features, mysterious containers, and why identification attempts consistently fail• The Astronomical Wheels - circular diagrams, zodiacal structures, embedded figures, and systems that resemble medieval cosmology without matching any known tradition• The Bathing Scenes - female figures in pools connected by tubes, architectural framing, and whether these represent medicine, anatomy, hydraulics, or something else entirely• The Cosmological Foldouts - massive engineered diagrams requiring careful planning, showing wear from repeated consultation, mapping something we cannot identify• The Pharmaceutical Recipes - dense text blocks with jars and plant parts, formatted like medieval remedy collections but describing unknown preparations• Competing Theories - natural language proposals, cipher systems, constructed languages, and the hoax hypothesis, each evaluated with forensic skepticism• Decipherment Claims - how to audit solutions like a skeptic, why confidence is not evidence, and what a real decipherment would look likeFrom its probable creation in the early 1400s through its acquisition by Emperor Rudolf II, its transmission through Jesuit archives, and its modern life at Yale, the Voynich has survived because people believed it contained valuable knowledge-even when they could not access that knowledge. The Voynich Manuscript does not promise revelation. It promises something more valuable: a clear understanding of what the manuscript is, what it contains, and why it has resisted interpretation for six centuries. By the end, you will know more about the Voynich than most people who have published theories about it. You will also know what you cannot know, which is more valuable than false certainty. This is not a book about solving a mystery. This is a book about understanding an object that refuses to be understood-and what that refusal teaches us about the limits of knowledge itself. For readers fascinated by medieval manuscripts, historical mysteries, cryptography, and the stubborn persistence of the unknown in an age that claims to explain everything.
