Publiés par Gallimard de 1936 à 1953, les romans de Raymond Guérin furent appréciés par Jean Paulhan et Albert Camus, entre autres écrivains français, Henry Miller et Curzio Malaparte à l'étranger. Au cœur de cette œuvre, le cycle Ébauche d'une mythologie de la Réalité invite le lecteur à une étonnante traversée des apparences : qu'il s'agisse, en effet, de ruiner les tabous de la morale traditionnelle ou les catégories de la convention littéraire, Guérin a forgé son style en s'inspirant de Dostoïevski et de Proust. Au Cynique, il emprunte sa lanterne pour ne rien ignorer de la misère humaine, à la divinité ses métamorphoses afin de du langage de la fiction naisse une incessante surprise.

Maurice Denis' Amour is an extended love letter to the woman who became his wife and muse. The title of each of the twelve prints is taken from the diary Denis kept of the courtship, which he transfigures in these scenes of his beloved asleep, picking roses, praying, or simply gazing back at him. All the dramatic use of flat colour and strong outlines that characterised the Nabi group of which he was the leader and theorist is present in these prints, but suffused in an otherworldly light and breathing an ethereal tenderness. This is one of the three hugely original portfolios of etchings brought out in 1899 by the great dealer Ambroise Vollard, and printed by the master craftsman Auguste Clot.
