When the body of a young mother is found on the banks of New Zealands Mataura River, young female police constable Sam Shephard begins an investigation, with horrifying and very personal implications. Book one in an addictive, atmospheric new series. *** SHORTLISTED for the CWA John Creasey (New Blood) Dagger 2019*** ***SHORTLISTED for the Ngaio Marsh Award*** The tensions within a tightknit village, along with various aspects of Kiwi society, are laid out with real authority, but it is Symons copper Sam, self-deprecating and very human, who represents the writers real achievement Guardian Lively evocation of small-town life, with a plot that grabs the readers attention with a heart-stopping opening and doesnt let go The Times An achievement that blends heart-stopping thrills with deep, believable characters in a stark New Zealand setting. It will leave readers reaching for the next Sam Shephard mystery Foreword Reviews When the body of a young mother is found washed up on the banks of the Mataura River, a small rural community is rocked by her tragic suicide. But all is not what it seems. Sam Shephard, sole-charge police constable in Mataura, soon discovers the death was no suicide and has to face the realisation that there is a killer in town. To complicate the situation, the murdered woman was the wife of her former lover. When Sam finds herself on the list of suspects and suspended from duty, she must cast aside her personal feelings and take matters into her own hands. To find the murderer and clear her name. A taut, atmospheric and page-turning thriller, Overkill marks the start of an unputdownable and unforgettable series from one of New Zealands finest crime writers. A sassy heroine, fabulous sense of place, and rip-roaring stories with a twist Kate Mosse Symon has created a compelling series lead, and her treatment of small-town New Zealand is superbly atmospheric. This ones a cracker Liam McIlvanney Overkill certainly feels like the beginning of something great. Its a clever first novel and a dark thriller thats well-paced and well-plotted with a satisfying and fitting ending CultureFly Symon nicely balances action, character and story in a well-drawn rural setting, and realistically speckles the book with light-hearted moments and humour throughout Kiwi Crime Powerful, coolly assured, and an absolute belter of a read LoveReading The key to the novel for me is definitely the humorous portrayal of the one-woman police band, both extremely naïve and too eager to prove herself in the eyes of her superiors and against the silent backdrop of her parents disappointment Crime Review With a twisty plot, a protagonist who shines and beautifully written observations of the cruellest things, Overkill is crime fiction at its best and this is an outstanding book. I predict that this series is going to soar here in the UK and it deserves to Crime Watch The authors style of storytelling is smooth and engaging, making Overkill very easy to read, which is enough to keep you cranking through the pages. The ending is a cracker Well look forward to the next in the series because with the authors storytelling skills, the first is a pleasure to read Crime Fiction Lover Overkill is Symons first novel, but it reads like the polished effort of a genre veteran. A family holiday creates unexpected drama when Liv, Ellen and Håkons elderly parents announce their decision to divorce. The subtlety with which she portrays the inconsistencies between how the characters see each other versus how they see themselves is masterful Sara Taylor Reading Helga Flatlands A Modern Family is like watching the sun rise on a cloudy horizon; light whispers and dances and breaks over the clouds. Layers of deliciously cumulative insight a moving and exquisite read Shelan Rodger A beautifully written novel, bittersweet, moving and poignant a wise novel of great insight New Books Magazine Flatland has the gift that I most often covert in the work of other writers: the ability to make everyday events compelling an utterly compelling and satisfying read. Pen & Sword Books Ltd Britain Enforcing the Peace, 19181923: The Royal Navy in Turkey and Southern Russia after the Great War
GTIN: 9781036123741 Raamatud
The end of the Great War in the Near East began with the Turkish Armistice but was not complete until the final peace treaty in 1923. During that five-year period the British Navy dealt with the overspill from the Russian Revolution in the Caucasus, the Caspian Sea and Central Asia as well, and then in the Aegean Sea and the Straits confronting the resurgent Turkish forces under Mustafa Kemal. The British in India were very concerned about Bolshevik activities in Central Asia and had sent two battalions of Indian troops under a British general to attempt to cope with it. They were successful in battle against larger forces, but politically they were unable to reach any sort of settlement. They were withdrawn when an Afghan war broke out. A second expedition was sent early in 1918 from Iraq through Persia to gain control of the oil fields at Baku in Azerbaijan. The object here was to prevent the oil falling into German or Turkish hands. This was an expedition at the limit of military capabilities, but it did succeed in seizing Baku and preventing a German conquest. In the process ships in the Caspian Sea were captured and turned into a Caspian Sea flotilla to fight Russian Bolshevik advances. These adventures happened before the Turkish Armistice. Constantinople had been occupied, but holding it became increasingly difficult and required the use of considerable forces, mainly British. The other allies gradually faded away or adopted the Turkish side. The resurgence of Turkish power in Anatolia eventually led to a tense confrontation between British and Turkish forces at Chanak on the Dardanelles and a difficult negotiation between generals. The result was a truce, British withdrawal from all occupied areas, and the collapse of the Lloyd George government in Britain, which was prepared to indulge in another war over the issues. Independently Published The Once Yellow House
GTIN: 9798392012374 Raamatud
The 'Yellow Massacre' of November 19th 2020, in which three hundred and forty-seven members of a secretive society known as 'The Retinue' were brutally slaughtered, has gone down in history as one of the most horrific and compelling unsolved mysteries of the decade, if not century. So far, information about this tragedy has been patchy and heavily censored by authorities.Questions abound: what was the exact cause of death of so many victims? What role did married couple Hope and Thomas Gloucester play in the massacre? What exactly went on at the property know as the 'Once Yellow House', where the Retinue were encamped? And are the rumours true -- were the Retinue really a cult?So far, these questions have gone unanswered.Until Now.Bram Stoker Award nominated author Gemma Amor (DEAR LAURA) has been granted exclusive access to never before seen documents collated from a variety of sources, including entries and sketches from the alleged personal scrapbook of Hope Gloucester herself, verbatim transcriptions of recorded conversations, emails, articles, and letters, and, driven by a desire to help shed light on a mystery that has affected the lives of so many, has compiled them into the world's first coherent account of the Yellow Massacre. What follows is a collection of somewhat surreal first-hand descriptions of a catastrophe that seems to be part truth, part rumour, party fantasy, and one might even suggest: part performance art."I say this with the utmost certainty: The Once Yellow House is probably my favorite work of Gemma's to date. Not only is it a testament to her remarkable talent as one of our finest contemporary horror writers, but the book skillfully illustrates how the epistolary format remains one of the most effective sub-genres of horror." - Eric LaRocca
