"This book focuses on the character and enduring influence of Milton's epic poem Paradise Lost, looking beyond the book's original text and into the various works and media it has inspired."-- The life and times of Miltons epic poem about Satans revolt against God and humanitys expulsion from paradiseJohn Miltons Paradise Lost has secured its place in the pantheon of epic poems, but unlike almost all other works in the pantheon, it is intimately associated with religious doctrine and its implications for how we live our lives. For more than three centuries, it has been a flashpoint for arguments not just about Christianity but also about governance, rebellion and obedience, sexual politics, and what makes poetry great. Alan Jacobs tells the story of Miltons enduring poem, shedding light on its composition and reception and explaining why it resonates so powerfully with us today.Composed through dictation after Milton went blind in 1652, Paradise Lost centers on an ancient biblical answer to the eternal question of how evil came into the world. It has proved impossible to disentangle the defense or critique of the poem from attitudes toward Christianity itself. Does Christian theology entail monarchy or democracy? Are relations between the sexes thwarted by pompous and tyrannical men or by vain and disobedient women? Jacobs traces how generations of readers have grappled with these and other questions, along the way revealing how Miltons poem influenced novelists like Mary Shelley and Philip Pullman and has served as the inspiration for paintings, operas, comic books, and video games. An essential companion to Miltons poetic masterpiece, this book shows why Paradise Lost continues to serve as a mirror reflecting our own complex attitudes about power and authority, justice and revolt, and sin and salvation. The earliest tramcars were horse-drawn and originated during the Victorian era, a large portion of them eventually being replaced with electric vehicles (which themselves were phased out or replaced by trolleybuses). A number of these tramcars have been restored and preserved and continue to be run by museums all around the world, with a fairly significant number based in Britain. Several tramcar bodies were sold to farmers and other individuals when the systems they were running on closed down. These bodies were used for a variety of purposes chicken houses, lambing pens and houses/holiday homes. A large number have since been recovered and restored and in many cases have been returned to their original condition and are running once again on heritage sites. Royston Morris vibrant images feature those tramcars that have been preserved (in one form or another) and can be seen across the country. Recent advances in the scientific understanding of the human mind and brain along with the emphases on evidence-based practice and competency-based education are creating increasing pressures to update some of the traditional approaches to structuring and organizing education and practice in the field. There have also been many calls in recent years for a unified approach to conceptualizing professional practice in psychology. This book examines whether there exists a unified conceptual framework for the field that is firmly based on current scientific understanding regarding human development and functioning, that applies across all the clinical populations and practice areas within the field, and that would also help integrate professional psychology more fully into health care and the sciences generally.Presents a unified science-based conceptual framework for professional psychologyProvides an overview of the whole treatment process as informed by a biopsychosocial approach, from intake through outcomes assessmentAvoids highly technical language so that students and practitioners from across the field can follow the discussion Autorid: Timothy P. LONGLISTED FOR THE 2024 NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FOR TRANSLATED LITERATUREWinner of the Rómulo Gallego Prize, The Abyss is a caustic masterwork of incredible power and force, an unforgettable autobiographical work of queer fiction. The novel tells about the demise of a crumbling house in Medellín, Colombia. Fernando, a writer, visits his brother Darío, who is dying of AIDS. Recounting their wild philandering and trying to come to terms with his beloved brother's inevitable death, Fernando rants against the political forces that cause so much suffering. Vallejo is the heir to Céline, Thomas Paine, and Machado de Assis. He hurls vitriolic, savagely funny insults at his country ("I wipe my ass with the new Constitution of Colombia") and at his mother ("the Crazy Bitch") who has given birth to him and his many siblings. Within this firestorm of pain, Fernando manages to get across much beauty and truth: that all love is painful and washed in pure sorrow. He loves his sick brother and the family's Santa Anita farm (the lost paradise of his childhood where azaleas bloomed); and he even loves his country, now torn to shreds. Always, in this savage masterpiece about loss-as if in the eye of Vallejo's hurricane of talent-we are in the curiously comforting workings of memory and of the writing process itself, as, recollecting time, it offers immortality.
Congratulations on your new job as an information security officer! What does this responsibility actually entail? How will you manage not to get bogged down? How are you going to keep all the relevant issues in mind? How will you get started? This book is intended to help you take a holistic approach to information security while retaining an overview of the topic. Its primary aim is to impart the essentials of the IT-Grundschutz approach - both as theory and practice - as per the BSI standards 200-x. This book not only serves as a practical guide to basic protection but also allows you to understand the procedure on your own computer as a mini scenario. Another focus is on awareness-raising trainings for employees of your institution targeted at specific groups. These trainings will need to be individually initiated, planned, implemented, and evaluated. We deal with the relevant technical and organizational aspects and focus on a discursive learning atmosphere devoted to interpersonal exchange, experience-oriented learning scenarios, and practical demonstrations designed to achieve a sustained effect and benefit all employees. Have fun reading and good luck with implementing the ideas!
After discussing the fundamental problems of current science and other philosophic concepts, beginning with controversies between Heraclitus and Parmenides, this book launches into a message of great hope: the future has not been determined. Contrary to globalization and the apparent contemporary mass culture society, individual behaviour is beginning to increasingly become the key factor which governs the evolution of both the world and society as a whole. It is a message that challenges existing widespread views, implicitly or explicitly, through mass communication; moreover the importance of the individual's actions implies a reflection of each person on the responsibilities that each one assumes when taking or acting upon a decision. This responsibility is associated with the freedom of thought as well as a critical analysis of fashions, customs, preconceived ideas, and ideologies, externally imposed: exactly contrary to the ideas of those who wish us to be "perfect consumers" in a world dominated only by monetary wealth.Challenging this drive towards the elimination of freedom of thought in the individual is now imperative if we are to save man and his planet from catastrophe, which seems to be ever imminent and (unfortunately) irreversible.
