Né en 1934 dans l'île de Hokkaido, au nord du Japon, dans une famille de photographes de studio, Masahisa Fukase aurait dû reprendre l'affaire de ses parents mais, après des études de photographie, il entame une carrière de reporter free-lance à la fin des années 1960. D'abord pour des magazines et dans le domaine de la publicité, avant de s'engager dans une oeuvre plus intime. C'est en 1971 qu'il publie son premier album de photographies, consacrée à sa famille, à travers des portraits de groupes. En 1974, il cofonde la Workshop Photography School avec Shomei Tomatsu, Eikoh Hosoe, Noriaki Yokosuka, Nobuyoshi Araki et Daido Moriyama. Le MoMA de New York leur consacre ette même année une exposition qui fera date : " New Japanese Photography ". Mais c'est le livre The Solitude of Ravens, sorti en 1986, qui va révéler Fukase avec ces images hallucinées et hallucinantes de corbeaux, travail entrepris suite à son divorce avec Yoko, sa seconde épouse. "Je deviens un corbeau", écrira même son auteur, à propos de cette série célèbre dans l'histoire de la photographie. Victime en 1992 d'une chute dans l'escalier de son bar favori et tombé dans le coma, âgé de 58 ans, Masahisa Fukase sera maintenu en soins intensifs jusqu'à sa mort en 2012. Ce livre est la seconde publication à l'Atelier EXB après l'ouvrage monographique Masahisa Fukase, paru en 2018.

This book describes the concept, characteristics, methodology, design, management, business, recent advances and future technologies of plant factories with artificial lighting (PFAL) and indoor vertical farms. The third wave of PFAL business started in around 2010 in Japan and Taiwan, and in USA and Europe it began in about 2013 after the rapid advances in LED technology. The book discusses the basic and advanced developments in recent PFALs and future smart PFALs that emerged in 2016. There is an emerging interest around the globe in smart PFAL R&D and business, which are expected to play an important role in urban agriculture in the coming decades. It is also expected that they will contribute to solving the trilemma of food, environment and natural resources with increasing urban populations and decreasing agricultural populations and arable land area.
