Lancaster has always had a vibrant pub culture. In Georgian times, with sailors landing in the port hell bent on drunken oblivion and revelry, lawyers, traders and even royalty wishing to find a good meal and a bed for the night, the city had to provide a range of establishments to satisfy demand. While some of the inns that were born as the town flourished have disappeared, many do still exist, though sometimes with a change of name, and even location. Well-known local historian (and lover of good beer) Andrew White has dug deep into the archives to trace the records of inns and pubs that have served the town over the centuries. In this wonderful new book, he paints a vivid picture of inn life, touching on all aspects, including brewing, publicans, food, prostitution, famous visitors and inn names, and also provides a unique and fascinating gazetteer of Lancaster inns, past and present. Growing up in Victorian Bolton was definitely not easy for Allen and Midge. Life was harsh, what with dangerous mill work,ever-present hunger, and their shoeless feet always cold. But these two young milltown boys were determined to have as much fun as they could, getting into plenty of mischief on the way. Their often hilarious escapades make for tremendously entertaining reading, but while we can laugh at some of their daring adventures, we have to remember that this is not fiction - these boys were real and all that is described here is true. The thirty-three cases in this excellent book give a unique and fascinating insight into life in the Victorian period, in Liverpool and beyond. Although murder can never be condoned, it is clear from the accounts of the lives of the accused and their victims that the world they inhabited was a harsh one, where people were pushed to the very end of their tethers on a daily basis. It seems little wonder sometimes that people snapped under the strain, and this is clearly what happened in some of the cases described here. Others, however, are much more brutal and premeditated and still have the ability to shock 150 years on. Autorid: David Parry
This excellent little book is a wonderful introduction to the story of the trial of the witches of Pendle in 1612. In a very lively and readable style, Christine Goodier provides a who's who of the events, as well as an interesting angle on the trials themselves. She emphasises that the accused were merely flesh and blood, not demons, arguing that they were poor, uneducated people who were at worst misguided. Her inevitable conclusion is that a terrible injustice was done 400 years ago when they were famously convicted of witchcraft and hanged. Autorid: Christine Goodier
...scattered heaps of stone, so thoroughly collapsed but still so numerous, mysterious & challenging ...This unique and engaging book takes the reader back in time, on a journey into the forgotten lives of Lancashire's lost hill-farming communities. In the space of little more than five square miles, there used to be nearly fifty farms, upon which hundreds of men, women and children depended. Then, almost overnight, the march of 'progress' robbed them of their homes and livelihoods, leaving behind a landscape frozen in time, with crumbling buildings and lonely vestiges of human habitation. Local author David Clayton has located all the remains of the old farmsteads that were the beating heart of life and work for generations of farming folk, and he reveals why it all ended so suddenly. Skilfully combining his intimate knowledge of all of the farms and most of the families with testimony from surviving diaries and other documents, he paints an intriguing, often poignant, picture of a way of life that now exists only as a memory. Presented in the form of a gentle tour that can be undertaken either from the comfort of an armchair or by wandering around the ruins, Lost farms of Brinscall Moors is a journey of exploration and discovery that will appeal to anyone interested in the history of both the local area and the county of Lancashire. The background study represents the ¿rst part of the deliverables of the Work Package 3.2. A for milestone one. It re¿ects the status of the power sector of Andhra Pradesh with speci¿c consideration of Greater Hyderabad. Beside transport, electricity is the main application of energy sources in the areas of generation, transmission, generation and consumption. The study places particular attention, ¿rst, to the regulatory framework of the Andhra Pradesh power sector and the linkages to Hyderabad and, second, to the state of the sub-sectors. Based on this we identify sources for ine¿cient energy use and provide the basis for further analysis of consumption patterns of households and ¿rms in the public and private sectors. The predominant problems of the power sector highlighted in the background study are huge supply gaps and growing peak de¿cits due to economic growth, insücient incentives for energy saving investments and limited capacity expansions, because tari¿ structures fail to set price signals for energy saving measures and application of low emission technologies. The results of the background study indicate several reasons for ine¿ciencies and supply gaps arising from institutional, economic and technical issues, such as subsidies for irrigation and agriculture failing to set incentives for energy savings for farmers. The background study forms the basis for analysis of strategies to improve energy e¿ciency and to develop strategies and projects together with the stakeholder analysis in the entire energy sector.

This paper analyses the structure of local, regional and national stakeholders that might be relevant for a transition of Hyderabad into a low-carbon megacity. The main angle of the stakeholder selection in this report is de¿ned by the leading question of our research: How do (local) lifestyle dynamics contribute to climate change, and how can lifestyle changes help to reduce local emissions and the vulnerability to global climate change? Our analysis reveals that climate change actually is a medium to low attention issue for the majority of stakeholders in Hyderabad (as in India in general). At the same time, the identi¿ed minority of individual or collective actors that actually do rate climate change higher on their agendas have the potential to form a critical mass for socioecological change in the city if (1) they improve their cooperation, if (2) institutional reforms in the urban space increase their impact, and if (3) they manage to align with a still ¿silent majority¿ of stakeholders that by now rate climate change to be of minor relevance. The latter point is based on another key ¿nding of our analyses: Actors with high structural power (based either on political, economic or network power) might be turned into potential ¿allies¿ of a low-carbon strategy, if (1) they can interpret adaptation and mitigation options as new opportunities in their option space, (2) climate issues are more closely linked to sustainability issues, and (3) they perceive institutional reforms and stakeholder involvement as being bene¿cial for their daily operations. From these insights we derive some consequences for future pilot projects and policy advice.
The background analysis focuses mainly on chances for civil society participation, its democratic legitimacy and the existing forms and experiences of civil society participation, as well as constraints to participation and access to information. Furthermore, relevant stakeholders are identi¿ed with a focus on civil society organisations in Hyderabad, which are active in the ¿eld of climate protection, energy, sustainability, and environment, and their goals, activities, strengths and weaknesses, networks and speci¿c needs described. On the basis of the stakeholder analysis, multiplicators within civil society that are relevant to the project¿s areas, can be identi¿ed for participative processes with other WPs. Based on these ¿ndings and in an iterative process to test strategies, the participation strategies can be adapted to the local, cultural and civil society context in Hyderabad.
The paper evaluates the global climate projections of 17 AOGCMs with the aim to project 4 climatic variables under two di¿erent global emission scenarios (SRES B1 and A2) for the area of Hyderabad (India) for the 21st century. The evaluated model runs were produced within the IPCC AR4 - process. We applied a statistical downscaling to be able to evaluate that large number of model runs. Aggregation of results was done on the basis of model and variable speci¿c weights re¿ecting the accuracy of reproduction of the current climate. Projection certainty was assessed by the degree of model consensus.
Essay from the year 2018 in the subject Pedagogy - Nursery Pedagogy, Early Childhood Education, grade: 69%, Newman University, language: English, abstract: Disability is viewed as a form of a social issue for families with disabled or impaired children and is referred to restrictions resulting from social experiences, which requires attention and needs to be addressed via removing the barriers that children and families experience (Curran and Cole, 2014: Burke, 2008). Since the focus of this essay is structured around the title ¿If I could change one thing¿I would change the fact that my child and my family have to fight for every single service we need¿ (NCB, 2007) shows no signs of an inclusive society. So, this essay will demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the common issues children with disabilities and families experience. A significant knowledge of the historical context of disability and the models surrounding disability, where segregation was obvious, and the knowledge of the legislation and policies for families with disabled children, will be demonstrated first. It will also evaluate some issues highlighted when supporting parents and families of children with disabilities and SEN. Some significance is placed around the importance of multi-agencies and partnership with parents and professionals from other agencies when offering provision for families with disabled children to show whether the society has moved from integration to inclusion.
