"The exquisite ceramic ware produced at the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory at Jingdezhen in southern China functioned as a kind of visual propaganda for the Qing dynasty (1644-1911) court. Through a detailed study of porcelain manufacture loosely structured around the career of the Manchu bannerman Tang Ying, who supervised ceramic production for the emperor, this volume considers the role of specialist officials in producing the technological knowledge and distinctive artistic forms that were essential to cultural policies of the Chinese state. Through fiscal management, technical experimentation, and design, these imperial technocrats facilitated rationalized manufacturing in precapitalist and preindustrial society. The volume draws on first-hand archaeological evidence from Jingdezhen, the foremost site of porcelain manufacture, as well as the voluminous Archive of the Imperial Handicraft Workshops to investigate a regional factory, the imperial design system, technological treatises, experiments deployed in porcelain manufacture, and court regulations. Grounded in methods for studying science and technology in society, as well as literary and art history, it contributes to scholarship on global empires and on the history of science and technology in China. In describing how the imperial state's intervention in industry has left a lingering imprint on modern China through its labor-intensive modes of production, the division of domestic and foreign markets, and a technocratic culture of centralization, it provides a new perspective for understanding the technology behind goods "made in China.""-- The exquisite ceramic ware produced at the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory at Jingdezhen in southern China functioned as a kind of visual propaganda for the Qing dynasty (16441911) court. "Drawing on work in philosophy, cultural studies, sociology, literary criticism, and political science, The Swedish Theory of Love shines a light on the workings of individualism in a far from utopian order of things"-- In 2020 Sweden's response to COVID-19 drew renewed attention to the Nordic nation in a way that put the finger on a seeming paradox. Long celebrated for its commitment to social solidarity, Sweden suddenly emerged as the last country in the West to resist lockdown while defending individual rights and responsibilities. To explain these contradictions, Henrik Berggren and Lars Trägårdh argue that the long-standing view of Sweden's welfare state as the result of socialist collectivism is flawed. While social values have been and remain strong, they have co-existed with a radical form of individualism. The English edition of the Swedish bestseller Är svensken människa , The Swedish Theory of Love examines a political culture that stresses individual autonomy on the one hand and trust in the state on the other. Delving into Swedish philosophy, cultural studies, sociology, literary criticism, and political science, the book moves beyond the perspective of rational social engineering to uncover the moral logic behind Sweden's welfare state: the notion that human relationships based on dependency and subordination lead to inauthenticity and that equality and autonomy are preconditions for genuine love and affection. This book presents Documents of Life (DoLs) as a research framework, offering both scholarly insight and practical guidance for conducting this kind of work. DoLs are everyday materials that illuminate the organisation of ordinary lives and their social worlds.Addressing key methodological questions in autoethnography, it brings together critical socio-cultural autoethnography (CSA) and DoLs through the innovative use of facet methodology (FM). This approach enables analytical engagement with texts across the social sciences while remaining attentive to narrative form, integrating literary studies within sociological inquiry through the DoL approach to an accountable/dialogical storytelling. Grounded in relational ethics and a critical humanist orientation, the book remains in dialogue with people and their accounts, recognising connections between the sociological and the literary, as well as the historical and the cultural. These strands are brought together through a sustained empirical focus on those who go to war (including the author, a former soldier) and those engaged in different, but equally consequential, struggles. The book will be of strong interest to PhD and postgraduate students seeking guidance on conducting autoethnographic research, in addition to scholars in sociology, anthropology, philosophy, politics, gender and masculinity studies, memory studies, organisational studies, and the social sciences more broadly. Written between 2021 and 2025 in Berlin and Pavia, João Romeiro Hermeto's Phenomenology of the Capitalist Eternisation develops a Marxist process-ontological critique of contemporary capitalist consciousness. Beginning from his postdoctoral research at Freie Universität Berlin, Hermeto identifies the "perpetual present" as capitalism's fundamental mode of temporal domination-an ahistorical social condition that disables transformation by destroying collective memory. Through close readings of philosophical, aesthetic, and ideological expressions of the current epoch, he analyzes how culture and thought are reshaped to fit capital's eternal now.Engaging thinkers from Marx, Hegel, and Lukács to Debord, Losurdo, and Jameson, Hermeto argues that capitalism reproduces itself by colonizing temporality-by replacing historical consciousness with a constant spectacle of the present. The book ranges from the philosophy of art and media to political theology, ecology, and intellectual property as mechanisms of control over knowledge production. At once philosophical and political, this study is a call to recover a dialectical sense of history-to reignite the capacity for collective imagination and social change within a world that declares itself eternal.
