Nikolaus Lenaus 24 Szenen umfassende Dichtung "Faust" nahm er zur Vorlage für sein zweiteiliges Orchesterwerk "Episoden aus Lenau's Faust". Den zweiten, zunächst für Klavier solo komponierten Teil, einen wilden, sich fast ins Delirium steigernden "Tanz in der Dorfschenke", überschrieb er mit "Mephistowalzer". Die Klavierkomposition ging schon bald eigenständig um die Welt und gilt bis heute als Inbegriff eines hochvirtuosen Bravourstückes. Im Anhang geben wir erstmals eine von Liszt gekürzte und vereinfachte Fassung des Stücks wieder.?

"Virtuosenstück im Stile einer ungarischen Rhapsodie" - so lautet der Eintrag Ravels zur "Tzigane" in der sogenannten "Autobiographischen Skizze". Dieses 1924 entstandene Werk existiert in drei Fassungen: mit Klavier, mit Orchester und mit Luthéal, einer Vorrichtung für Tasteninstrumente zur Erweiterung des Klangspektrums. Angeregt wurde "Tzigane" durch die ungarisch-englische Geigerin Jelly d'Aranyi, der Ravel bereits 1922 ein virtuoses Stück in der Nachfolge der "Ungarischen Rhapsodien" von Franz Liszt versprochen hatte. Ravel kam nur langsam voran, so dass d'Aranyi die Noten erst vier Tage vor der Uraufführung erhielt - aber das Werk trotzdem mit Bravour aufführte.
Dont, Kreutzer, Rode: three of the most prominent violin pedagogues of the nineteenth century are united here in one volume. At the outset of the nineteenth century, Rodolphe Kreutzer and Pierre Rode each composed epochal collections of studies (see HN 1177 and HN 1186); in 1852, as an introduction to these two standard works, Jakob Dont wrote his exceptionally helpful 24 Preparatory Exercises op. 37, which even today no student of the violin can avoid. Their success is also evident from the fact that numerous revised editions were published in the twentieth century by violinists such as Hans Sitt, Carl Flesch, or Ivan Galamian. Now for the first time, G. Henle Publishers' Urtext edition restores access to the unadulterated original with Dont's authentic fingering and bowing suggestions, in an outstandingly legible musical text. The prominent violin pedagogue Paul Roczek acted as a consultant for this edition and carefully supplemented Dont's original marking.

This Spanish composer wrote compositions for every genre, but the piano was undoubtedly his main focus. The 12 "Danzas españolas", first published in four volumes between 1890 and 1895, are an important highlight in his early oeuvre. "My inspiration is founded above all in the singing of the people", explained Granados. "Nevertheless, [these dances] are quite original and are no mere transcriptions". They thus set themselves apart from the conventional folkloric pieces of the time, belonging instead in the tradition of the character pieces of Chopin or Schumann. Their rhythms and melodies borrow from dances from all over Spain, and this is what gives them their unique atmosphere. All available sources were consulted for this Urtext edition, including Granados's own recordings.
The three volumes of the "Années de pèlerinage" belong to the core of Liszt's piano oeuvre. In the first volume, "Suisse", the composer realised impressions of an extended sojourn in Switzerland in 1835/36. The pieces, for the most part published already in 1840/41, were later substantively reworked by Liszt, and the collection enlarged by two numbers, until it received its final form in 1855. For the revision of the Henle Urtext edition, it was possible for the first time to also take into account the engraver's copy of the first edition that was once again accessible. The resulting modification in the weighting of the sources and further important new findings in Liszt research are presented in detail in the preface and the comments. We were able to enlist the Swiss pianist Francesco Piemontesi for the fingerings.

The photographs - mostly discovered by chance in a New York flea market in 2004 - chronicle the experiences of men who dressed as women, gender nonconforming people, and transwomen in states of relaxation, experimentation, connection and joy. All of this was made possible by Susanna Valenti who - on her own journey toward womanhood - created Casa Susanna, a protected space where others could crossdress and live freely as women. Supplementing the images are excerpts from Transvestia, a magazine that allowed those who had been cast out by a rigidly binary society to connect in a different medium. The people who came to Casa Susanna found a spot where they could explore and celebrate their own and each other’s femininity, as they could not do elsewhere. Among Haydn's piano sonatas, the great Sonata in E-flat-major is particularly popular. It was composed in 1794 during Haydn's second stay in London where he became acquainted with the new English fortepiano and its fuller sound, pedals, and larger range. These new sound possibilities may have inspired the composer to write a noticeably fuller, chordal texture in the first two movements. Closely linked to G. Henle Publishers through numerous collaborative projects on Bach and Mozart, András Schiff was engaged to provide fingerings for this exceptional work in Urtext.

Debussy erarbeitete die viersätzige Suite 1888, gerade aus Italien zurückgekehrt, wo er sich als Rom-Preisträger zu einem Stipendiaten-Aufenthalt in der Villa Medici in Rom aufgehalten hatte. Er spielte die Suite 1889 zusammen mit Paul Dukas am Pariser Konservatorium vor und fand großen Anklang. Unter den Studenten war Henri Busser zugegen, der den Zyklus 1907, als Debussy längst eine Berühmtheit war, für Orchester bearbeitete. Debussy bedankte sich umgehend brieflich bei Busser für die "geistreiche Orchestrierung". Das Werk gehört heute im Original und seinen zahlreichen Bearbeitungen zu Debussys meistgespielten Kompositionen.
Bach schenkte seiner Ehefrau Anna Magdalena zwei handgeschriebene Notenhefte. Das zweite davon war besonders wertvoll, mit einem pergamentüberzogenen Einband mit Goldschnitt versehen. In dieses Büchlein von 1725 notierte er zahlreiche Klavierstücke in den verschiedensten Stilen - eigene und solche von anderen Komponisten. Die Henle-Urtextausgabe, die übrigens zu den alljährlich am meisten verkauften Titeln unseres Katalogs zählt, gibt den gesamten Inhalt dieser Handschrift notengetreu und hervorragend von Hand gestochen wieder, ausgenommen die im Notenbüchlein enthaltenen Sätze aus den "Französischen Suiten" (HN 71) und "Partiten" (HN 28), die man im Henle-Katalog bekanntlich an anderer Stelle findet.
