'What passing-bells for these who die as cattle?' The First World War produced an extraordinary flowering of poetic talent, from poets whose words commemorate the conflict as enduringly as monuments in stone. Their poems have come to express the feelings of a nation about the horrors and aftermath of war. This new anthology provides a definitive record of the achievements of the Great War poets. As well as offering generous selections from the celebrated soldier-poets, including Wilfred Owen, Siegfried Sassoon, Rupert Brooke, and Ivor Gurney, it also incorporates less well-known writing by civilian and women poets. Music hall and trench songs provide a further lyrical perspective on the War. The work of each poet is prefaced with a biographical account that sets the poems in their historical context. In addition, Tim Kendall's introduction charts the history of the war poets' reception and challenges prevailing myths about their progress from idealism to bitterness. This is the untold story of how some of Germany's top aristocrats contributed to Hitler's secret diplomacy during the Third Reich, providing a direct line to their influential contacts and relations across Europe -- especially in Britain, where their contacts included the press baron and Daily Mail owner Lord Rothermere and the future King Edward VIII. Using previously unexplored sources from Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, and the USA, Karina Urbach unravels the story of top-level go-betweens such as the Duke of Coburg, grandson of Queen Victoria, and the seductive Stephanie von Hohenlohe, who rose from a life of poverty in Vienna to become a princess and an intimate of Adolf Hitler. As Urbach shows, Coburg and other senior aristocrats were tasked with some of Germany's most secret foreign policy missions from the First World War onwards, culminating in their role as Hitler's trusted go-betweens, as he readied Germany for conflict during the 1930s -- and later, in the Second World War. Tracing what became of these high-level go-betweens in the years after the Nazi collapse in 1945 -- from prominent media careers to sunny retirements in Marbella -- the book concludes with an assessment of their overall significance in the foreign policy of the Third Reich.

Eloquent Christian meditations on death. Kreeft downplays theology by casting his book in the form of "thought experiments" - i.e., if, for the sake of argument, we grant the truth of Christianity, what insights do we gain? From this hypothetical standpoint he looks at five aspects of death: death as an enemy, as a stranger, as a friend, as a mother, and as a lover. For each of these personifications Kreeft offers a series of tightly organized, pithily phrased, and sometimes quite moving reflections. For his chapter on death as a stranger, for instance, he builds on the notion that the pre-Christian mind was death-accepting (fatalistic), the Christian mind death-defying (because of faith in the resurrection), and the post-Christian mind death-denying. Modern society - and many of its Christian members - cannot come to terms with death bemuse it gives the lie to so many cherished cultural myths: the pursuit of happiness, the narcosis of collectivism, the technological conquest of nature, etc. Christianity cannot simply welcome death as a friend (since it violates our humanity), nor reject it as an enemy (since it leads to a fuller life), so it follows a painful but fruitful dialectic that synthesizes both approaches. Kreeft is not an original thinker, but he's sensitive, fresh, and exceptionally well-read. He writes dense, driving prose that blends vivid exposition and confessional intensity. And he's not afraid of jolting the reader with violent imagery: "Our old body is our hymen; God is the phallic sword; and our body succumbs to death bemuse we are ravished by our Lover." Pungent, potent, unconventional. (Kirkus Reviews)

In May 1998, the US Congress invited the seven members of the L0pht to testify on the state of government computer security. Two years later, that same group rode the Dot-com bubble to create the preeminent security consultancy the industry has ever known, @stake. Along the way, they stood up against tech giants like Microsoft, Oracle, Novell and others to expose weaknesses in those companies' premiere products. Despite the L0pht's technical prowess, the group could not keep what they had built together as money and internal politics turned friend against friend. Look inside L0pht Heavy Industries, or simply The L0pht, one of the most influential hacker groups in history. From formation, to congressional testimony, to going legit and the aftermath that followed. Follow the hacker 'Space Rogue' as he takes you on a journey through the magical hacker scene of the 1990s.The L0pht hacker collective no longer exists, but its legacy lives on. L0pht set the standard for how the cyber security industry now releases vulnerability information. Famous hackers that were once L0pht members, Mudge, Weld Pond, Kingpin, Dildog, Space Rogue, and others have done even more impressive things in the following years. The hackers and consultants hired by @stake and indoctrinated into the L0pht way of thinking have now become giants in the industry. All the hackers who read security information off the L0pht's website, downloaded software from the Whacked Mac Archives, or watched the Hacker News Network and became inspired have changed the world more than the L0pht could have ever done alone. The L0pht's message of bringing security issues to light and getting them fixed still echoes throughout the industry and is more important today than ever. The L0pht's dire warning of an increasingly dependent culture on a fragile Internet made during their testimony twenty-five years ago still holds true. In fact, the Internet may be in even worse shape today. Is it too late to listen?
Bayesian analysis has developed rapidly in applications in the last two decades and research in Bayesian methods remains dynamic and fast-growing. Dramatic advances in modelling concepts and computational technologies now enable routine application of Bayesian analysis using increasingly realistic stochastic models, and this drives the adoption of Bayesian approaches in many areas of science, technology, commerce, and industry. This Handbook explores contemporary Bayesian analysis across a variety of application areas. Chapters written by leading exponents of applied Bayesian analysis showcase the scientific ease and natural application of Bayesian modelling, and present solutions to real, engaging, societally important and demanding problems. The chapters are grouped into five general areas: Biomedical & Health Sciences; Industry, Economics & Finance; Environment & Ecology; Policy, Political & Social Sciences; and Natural & Engineering Sciences, and Appendix material in each touches on key concepts, models, and techniques of the chapter that are also of broader pedagogic and applied interest.
