Collects essays and works in which the authors share their love of the city Naples. Born in Australia, Shirley Hazzard first moved to Naples as a young woman in the 1950s to take up a job with the United Nations. It was the beginning of a long love affair with the city. The Ancient Shore collects the best of Hazzards writings on Naples, along with a classic New Yorker essay by her late husband, Francis Steegmuller. For the pair, both insatiable readers, the Naples of Pliny, Gibbon, and Auden is constantly alive to them in the present. With Hazzard as our guide, we encounter Henry James, Oscar Wilde, and of course Goethe, but Hazzards concern is primarily with the Naples of our own timeoften violently unforgiving to innocent tourists, but able to transport the visitor who attends patiently to its rhythms and history. A town shadowed by both the symbol and the reality of Vesuvius can never fail to acknowledge the essential precariousness of lifenor, as the lover of Naples discovers, the human compassion, generosity, and friendship that are necessary to sustain it. Beautifully illustrated by photographs from such masters as Henri Cartier-Bresson and Herbert List, The Ancient Shore is a lyrical letter to a lifelong love: honest and clear-eyed, yet still fervently, endlessly enchanted. Much larger than all its parts, this book does full justice to a place, and a time, where nothing was pristine, except the light.Bookforum Deep in the spell of Italy, Hazzard parses the difference between visiting and living and working in a foreign country. She writes with enormous eloquence and passion of the beauty of getting lost in a place.Susan Slater Reynolds, Los Angeles Times The two voices join in exquisite harmony. . . . American paratrooper medics Robert E. Wright and Kenneth J. Moore exemplify remarkable courage and wartime medical heroism through their profound care and compassion for wounded soldiers amidst battlefield horrors. At the break of dawn on D-Day, two young American paratrooper medics descended silently by parachute into the unfamiliar terrain of Normandy. Landing within half a mile of the quaint village of Angoville au Plain, just five and a half miles from the Utah invasion beach, they had no idea that the small 12th century church in this hamlet, surrounded by stone cottages and farmhouses housing only eighty-three inhabitants, would soon transform into a sanctuary for wounded American and German soldiers. In this unexpected haven, equal care and respect would be extended to all in need.At the heart of this story are the lives and deeds of medic Robert E. Wright and medic/stretcher bearer Kenneth J. Moore. Their accounts reveal the profound care and compassion they administered to their fellow soldiers amid the brutal realities of injury and death on the battlefield. More than a tale of wartime medical heroism, this is a poignant story of remarkably courageous young men facing incomprehensible stress, striving against all odds to preserve the livesof their comrades. John Zorn is one of the most prolific and active American composers/performers working today and has been a fixture of New York's "Downtown Scene" since the mid-70s as a tireless proponent of avant-garde and experimental music. Despite the acclaim and respect he has achieved in America and abroad, very little attention has been paid to Zorn by musicologists or music theorists. Author John Brackett suggests that the reason for the relative paucity of writing on Zorn's music and musical thought has to do with the difficulties and challenges it presents both for listeners and scholars.Zorn's musical language - an amalgam of seemingly incongruous techniques, sounds, styles, and genres - creates complex and sometimes confusing listening experiences that are difficult to categorize in terms of overarching thematic or narrative design. Brackett offers a number of perspectives for understanding Zorn's music and musical practices, while challenging certain assumptions that limit the ways in which contemporary music is typically addressed.
Bringing together diverse case studies and interdisciplinary perspectives, this open access collection serves as the first in-depth examination of queer and trans displacement in East Africa. The collection features original creative works by queer and trans diasporic writers and artists with first-hand experiences of displacement. The last decade has seen a sharp rise in state-sponsored homophobia and transphobia in East Africa. This includes discriminatory legislation, such as the widely condemned Anti-Homosexuality Act in Uganda, and government-initiated crackdowns, such as the 'anti-gay taskforce' launched in Tanzania in 2018. The politicisation of sexual and gender rights in the region is often presented as a moral crusade (i.e. a return to traditional/family values) and is enacted with the support of many religious and cultural leaders. It is within this context that an ever-increasing number of LGBTQI+ people are leaving their homes and seeking protection elsewhere. But East Africa cannot be reduced to a site from which LGBTQI+ displacement emanates. Several countries in the region act as either host countries or transit points, even as they produce LGBTQI+ refugees of their own. These complex social, political and legal dynamics make East Africa a productive site for theorising queer and trans displacement. The region offers insights into how, when and why LGBTQI+ Africans move, the social obstacles they face, and the different survival strategies they deploy. Despite this, research on East African queer and trans displacements remains sparse. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. Open access was funded by the Bloomsbury Open Collections Library Collective. This story by one of China's best contemporary authors offers great insight into modern Chinese society. The hustle and bustle of twenty-first century Shanghai serves as a backdrop for a story rive with office politics and social intrigue. An aimless man, lacking the ambition that those around him possess, is tasked with delivering donated satellite phone equipment to a remote village where the people are peaceful and lead lives that are the complete opposite of his colleagues in the city. In that remote village, the man becomes acquainted with the wild bears that are arcane symbols of long lost virtues. His presence changes the village, while his absence from work makes him an unwitting player and pawn to an office coup in the making, one that will change his life for either better or worse. in author, Sun Wei's search from deliverance from the malaise in modern Chinese society, she discovered that real wisdom and elegance can be found in the cultures of ancient times, when people were at peace with their souls and content with the generosity of Mother Nature instead of being tormented by the pursuit of wealth.

This is an Open access book which examines learning-based innovation (LBI) in working life. It presents innovation as a continuous process embedded in the everyday practices of organizations, shaped by the competence, learning, and participation of employees, and made visible through diverse projects, outcomes, and value creation. The book offers four learning-based perspectives on innovation activities, focusing on innovation actors and the roles they construct, the nature of the competence and learning practices required for innovation, LBI projects and their multifaceted value creation, as well as the challenges of innovation and workplace pedagogical approaches to addressing them. The work is based on the EDLI Employee-Driven Learning and Innovation research project (20222025), drawing on empirical data from two Finnish organizations: the police and a technology-sector organization. The book makes a scientific contribution to research on workplace learning and (employee-driven) innovation, offering rich empirical examples and new theoretical insights for researchers and students. At the same time, it provides accessible perspectives and practical ideas for practitioners in working life, including working-life experts, leaders, and employees. Autorid: Soila Lemmetty
In 2025, the National Trust invited the celebrated British photographer Martin Parr (19522025) to capture the village community of Lacock in Wiltshire, where Henry Fox Talbot had invented modern photography in the 1830s. It was to be Parr's last major commission. "It is such a bittersweet experience for me to look through these photographs of Lacock taken by Martin over the past year. There are so many echoes from his work throughout his long career. It's a credit to Martin that he made this work, so full of the life he loved, when his health was failing so dramatically. What a great way to end such a distinguished career, back in the Home of Photography." From Susie Parr's Foreword Over the course of 2025, Martin Parr, one of Britain's best-known and most influential contemporary photographers, turned his lens on the community at Lacock, a village in Wiltshire, England, cared for by the National Trust. In what was to be his last major commission, he captured aspects of daily village life, the annual flower show, the Scarecrow Trail and the celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day. This collection brings together 58 of those remarkable images, chosen by Parr himself shortly before his death. Quirky, ironic, colourful and occasionally poignant, the selection features many of the elements, juxtapositions and observations that make Parr's work so distinctive. The photographs are accompanied by a foreword by Parr's widow, Susie, and an illustrated introduction by National Trust curator Andy Cochrane, who accompanied the photographer on many of the shoots.
