2017. aasta ilukirjanduse Finlandia auhinna pälvinud romaan "Neem" jutustab meile soome rahva ajaloo ehk nn soomeliku vaimsuse kujunemiskäigu ja tagamaad. Autor Juha Hurme alustab kosmilisest Suurest Paugust ja rändab läbi 14 miljardi aasta kuni 19. sajandi esimese kümnendini, et näidata, kui mitmekesisest ainesest koosneb ühe rahva iseolemine. Lugeja ees on terve maailma suvaliste rõhuasetustega kultuurilugu. Autorid: Juha Hurme, Tiiu Kokla

Swallow and starling, puffin and peregrine, blue tit and blackcap. We use these names so often that few of us ever pause to wonder about their origins. What do they mean? Where did they come from? And who created them? The words we use to name birds are some of the most lyrical and evocative in the English language. They also tell incredible stories: of epic expeditions, fierce battles between rival ornithologists, momentous historical events and touching romantic gestures. Through fascinating encounters with birds, and the rich cast of characters who came up with their names, in Mrs Moreau's Warbler Stephen Moss takes us on a remarkable journey through time. From when humans and birds first shared the earth to our fraught present-day coexistence, Moss shows how these names reveal as much about ourselves and our relationship with the natural world as about the creatures they describe. Innocent boys sentenced to die, not for a crime they did not commit, but for a crime that never occurred. Lives splintered as casually as wood being hacked for kindling. Alabama, 1931. A freight train is stopped in Scottsboro, nine black youths are brutally arrested and, within minutes, the cry of rape goes up from two white girls. In the shocking aftermath, one sticks to her story whilst the other keeps changing her mind, and an impassioned young journalist must try to save nine boys from the electric chair, one girl from a lie, and herself from the clutches of the past . . . Stirring racism, sexism and the politics of a divided America into an explosive brew, Scottsboro gives voice to the victims - black and white - of this infamous case. 'A gripping read as well as an important one.' Rana Mitter, GuardianIn October 1839, Britain entered the first Opium War with China. Its brutality notwithstanding, the conflict was also threaded with tragicomedy: with Victorian hypocrisy, bureaucratic fumblings, military missteps, political opportunism and collaboration. Yet over the past hundred and seventy years, this strange tale of misunderstanding, incompetence and compromise has become the founding episode of modern Chinese nationalism.Starting from this first conflict, The Opium War explores how China's national myths mould its interactions with the outside world, how public memory is spun to serve the present, and how delusion and prejudice have bedevilled its relationship with the modern West.'Lively, erudite and meticulously researched' Literary Review'An important reminder of how the memory of the Opium War continues to cast a dark shadow.' Why are otherwise smart and competent people such lousy investors? Individual investors give up as much as two-thirds of their potential investment returns in misguided efforts to beat the market?and most don't even realize it.Ashvin B. Chhabra, chief investment officer of one of the world's largest wealth management firms, explains that an important idea has gotten lost amid the relentless pursuit of investment returns. Rather than trying to beat the market, your primary goal should be to construct an investment strategy that creates a solid safety net and enables you to pursue your dreams and aspirations. With no more guarantee of lifelong jobs or pensions, all of us bear the burden of investing wisely. But many of us focus on the wrong set of investment activities, such as identifying the next great start-up or star fund manager, or simply beating a market benchmark. Even the standard framework for investing, modern portfolio theory, offers an incomplete solution. Meanwhile, the grand debates in finance, such as indexing versus active management, prioritize the wrong set of issues. We need a framework that shifts the focus of investment strategy from portfolios and markets to individuals and the objectives that really matter: protection against unexpected financial crises or retirement planning. Whatever matters most to you?paying for your kid's education, starting your own business, endowing your favorite charity, or traveling the world?you need a road map to help you achieve both your essential and aspirational goals. In The Aspirational Investor, Ashvin B. Chhabra outlines a groundbreaking yet intuitive approach to managing wealth, based on the identification of key goals and the careful allocation of resources and risks. The Wealth Allocation Framework will help you connect your investment portfolio with your life's goals, and accommodate the three seemingly incompatible objectives that must underpin every sound wealth management strategy: the need for financial security in the face of unknowable risks, the desire to maintain current living standards despite inflation, and the opportunity for life-changing wealth creation.Chhabra's pioneering work illuminates some surprising facts about how people get very wealthy, and reinterprets the success formulas of investing greats such as Warren Buffett and David Swensen. Chhabra also offers a novel perspective: If the markets don't really care about you, as surely they do not, then why should you spend all your time and effort trying to beat them?Raising the bar for what we should expect from our investment portfolios?and from our investment advisors? The Aspirational Investor is a thoughtful, practical guide for any investor, regardless of income or wealth level.
Milk Wood Memoir, the fourth collection by Samantha Wynne-Rhydderch, opens with a handful of family recollections of Dylan Thomas, including Samanthas grandfathers presence in the poets house on the night he was shot at in March 1945. Thomass wartime sojourn in New Quay in West Wales from 1944 to 1945 was one of the most important creative periods in his life. Many scholars have linked the small coastal town to the imagined Llareggub (buggerall) in which Thomas set his most famous work, Under Milk Wood. New Quays present-day poet-resident, Samantha Wynne-Rhydderch, takes up the baton of the guide who never made it into the final version of Thomass play, showing us around her hometown through the eyes of its inhabitants past and present. In a series of eco-elegies, she explores how the wood of Under Milk Wood is turning into a floating forest due to coastal erosion. The paths once walked by Dylan Thomas between his bungalow and the pubs of New Quay are slowly collapsing into the sea, taking with them both trees and houses. As the guide takes us along the path she points out moments and monuments, all the while relating various hanes (pronounced ha-ness, a Welsh word for stories, gossip) relating to local characters, a sort of family lore handed down the generations. Samantha Wynne-Rhydderch takes us by the hand and shows us the joys and sadnesses, excitements and fears behind the doors of the town she believes is key to Under Milk Wood. Wynne-Rhydderchs poetry masters a variety of styles, is intelligent, sincere, and deeply human. How lucky we are to have a guide like her Matthew Dickman Autorid: Samantha Wynne-Rhydderch
To the Hermitage tells two tales: a contemporary story of our narrator, a novelist, who has been invited to Stockholm and then to Russia to take part in what is enigmatically referred to as the Diderot Project, and one set two hundred years earlier in which Bradbury brilliantly recreates Diderots journey to Russia to entertain and enlighten the mind of that powerful monarch, Catherine the Great. Part of the Picador Collection, a series celebrating fifty years of Picador books and showcasing the best of modern literature. To the Hermitage reads like a love letter to the life of the mind from a man who, in his work as a writer, critic, academic and teacher, has done much to contribute to that dizzying circulation of ideas which is so richly celebrated here The Independent on Sunday A charming, engaging, witty, amusing, playful, reflective and informative book by a writer who is in championship-winning form The Sunday Express Autorid: Malcolm Bradbury
