Antisemitism has been on the rise in recent years, with violent attacks, increased verbal insults, and an acceptability in some circles of what would hitherto have been condemned as outrageous antisemitic discourse. Yet despite the dramatic increase in debate and discussion around antisemitism, many of us remain confused. In this urgent and timely book, Rabbi Julia Neuberger uses contemporary examples, along with historical context, to unpack what constitutes antisemitism, building a powerful argument for why it is so crucial that we come to a shared understanding now. A fictional autobiography of Maigret, Georges Simenons brilliant detective. The thirty-fifth book in the new Penguin Maigret series. In this make-believe memoir, Maigret recounts a meeting with the author himself. The account starts with the arrival of Georges Sim, as he is called here, at the Paris Police Judiciaire to soak up atmosphere for his crime novels by dogging the footsteps of Inspector Maigret. The detective is irritated by the audacious young writer who names a character after him and argues that he oversimplifies, in his fiction, the intricate duties of the police investigating a case. Here, Maigret sets the record straight, telling readers how hes different from the invention, and about his courtship and marriage to his beloved Louise. Ingeniously amusing and tender, this is a look inside the mind of the brilliant Maigret like never before. Autorid: Georges Simenon, Howard Curtis
How a system of colonial trusteeship converted Native wealth into settler capitalFrom the earliest days of its founding, the United States set its sights on Native territory. Amid better-known Indian wars, the federal government quietly built an empire by treaty, offering payments to Native peoples for their land. Routinely inadequate, these payments were nonetheless pivotal because federal officials chose not to deliver them as a lump sum. Instead, the government kept the bulk of payments owed to Native nations under its own control as a trustee, and made access to future installments contingent on Native compliance. In Vested Interests, Emilie Connolly describes how a system of fiduciary colonialism seized a continent from its original inhabitantsand, ironically, furnished Native peoples with financial resources that sustained their nations.Connolly documents two centuries of dispossession in the guise of fiduciary benevolence. Acting as both dispossessor and trustee, the federal government invested Native wealth in state bonds that financed banks, canals, and other infrastructural projects that enabled the country to expand further westward. Meanwhile, Native peoples protected the money they did receive for future generations, investing it in their own institutions and mounting legal challenges to hold their trustees accountable. Still, federal trusteeship placed tight constraints on Native economies with the aim of containing Native power, forcing nations to endure through sheer resilience and ingenuity. By chronicling the long history of Native land dispossession through financial paternalism, Vested Interests reveals the unequal dividends of colonialism in the United States. Every culture has its wild entertainment, but the Roman Saturnalia is looked upon as the granddaddy of them all.Roberts's vivid fictional account of the annual event takes place in first century Rome is a historically correct picture of excess, with the city's ordinary life shut down, all rules and most laws inoperative, and even slaves permitted to celebrate without restraint. At the same time, the noted family of Decius Caecilius Metellus the Younger have reluctantly summoned the young playboy, banished to the island of Rhodes for his wild ways, to seek his help in solving a crime that touches them directly and dangerously. They need him to use his investigative talents to look into the poison death of a politically powerful relative and the suspicion that it is the man's wife who administered the dose. Decius, convinced she is innocent (of this murder, at any rate) looks further for the killer---a quest that leads him to a secret, banned cult of witchcraft being practiced by highborn Romans of both sexes. With the witches at his heels, Decius plunges into the maelstrom of Rome at the height of Saturnalia, and barely escapes with his life.
Northamptonshire is a happy hunting ground for church crawlers, being particularly famous for its numerous wonderful spires. There are dozens of major churches, ranging from the internationally important work at Brixworth and Earls Barton through to Sir Ninian Compers early twentieth-century masterpiece in Wellingborough, with all periods and styles in between well represented. Church monuments and stained glass also make a strong contribution to the pleasures awaiting visitors. The countys geology is crucial to the appearance of its buildings: there are at least three main different local stones, and many varieties within these categories, all with their different shades and individual characters. In this book church historian David Gouldstone presents a selection of the countys best churches, pointing out special features and capturing what it is that makes them special, as well as relating them to their historical periods and highlighting the stories of the people associated with the buildings. This fascinating picture of an important part of the history of Northamptonshire over the centuries will be of interest to all those who live in or are visiting this attractive and varied English county. José Emilio Pachecos Selected Poems is a major bilingual retrospective of the poetry of one of Mexicos foremost writers. Born in 1939, Pacheco achieved recognition early, and while still in his twenties, he was already keeping company with the most important writers of his generation. A prolific poet and perfectionist, Pacheco published many volumes of poetry, including his famous 1969 collection No me preguntes como pasa el tiempo (Dont Ask Me How the Time Goes By). This edition is edited by George McWhirter of The University of British Columbia, who worked closely with Pacheco himself in choosing the poems and their English translations. Besides McWhirters own versions are those by Edward Dorn, Alastair Reid, Katherine Silver, and others. As McWhirter writes: In his singularity of vision and multiplicity of poetic forms, traditional and modern, Pacheco spans past and present in both Latin American and peninsular Spanish poetry. It is a glittering and giant technical achievement, as brilliant and instantly visible as Hart Cranes The Bridge. Autorid: José Emilio Pacheco, George McWhirter
