The Baird Casket is an extraordinary survival which was completely unknown to the public until shortly before its emergence on the art market in Edinburgh in 2021. Showing scenes of combat with wild men and their capture alongside carvings celebrating the power of the sword, it combines imagery that is unique amongst the corpus of surviving ivories with a remarkable provenance, which dates to the late 17th century. Williamson draws on his extensive expertise to present a complete examination of the casket, ranging from its history in the possession of the Baird family to its facture and interpretation. In doing so he presents a new reading of the scenes depicted and uncovers a possible identity of the original intended owner. The casket has only been published once previously in a 2022 journal article, making this more detailed discussion an exciting and valuable new contribution to the field of medieval studies. The Regency was a period of crucial importance in the history of collecting Old Master paintings in England. As the owners of aristocratic collections in France and Italy were forced by the political upheavals following the French Revolution to part with their inherited possessions, Old Masters arrived on the London art market in unprecedented quantity and quality. This book presents seven case studies of English collectors of the period, tracing how their collections were formed, and analysing the taste that guided them. Also discussed here are how these new owners displayed their acquisitions and how they sought to organise them into a new unity. Peter Humfrey examines in detail seven notable Regency collectors the 4th Earl Darnley, the 2nd Earl Grosvenor, Amabel de Grey, Sir Richard Colt Hoare, Philip John Miles, Samuel Rogers, and the 5th Earl Cowper. All were of course from the upper ranks of society. They nevertheless show, as well as many other similarities, several telling differences. They were from both the higher and lesser nobility, and the gentry; they acquired their fortunes (and collections) through inheritance, but also made them anew; predictably, most of the collectors were men, but one to be discussed here was a woman; some chose to house their collections in central London, but others at their seats in the country; and within the parameters of fashionable taste, the seven show rather different priorities in their choices of schools, scale, and subject matter. No doubt, too, the collectors selected here were motivated by different considerations, and fashion, financial investment, and political and social self-promotion in addition, presumably, to aesthetic pleasure must all have played a part. For each case study an Appendix lists the paintings they acquired. Together the appendices may serve to give a general idea of the prevailing taste among collectors during the Regency period. In 1338 Ambrogio Lorenzetti painted three huge frescoes known today as Good and Bad Government on the walls of the Sala dei Nove, the Room of the Nine, in the Palazzo Pubblico in Siena, where the citys nine executive magistrates presided over the destiny of this famous commune. The frescoes were meant to be strong visual reminders of the Noves duties and an admonishment of the nefarious effects of bad government. Good and Bad Government has become one of the most widely reproduced works of the early Renaissance and is recognized for its many innovations, including the first European panorama of a cityscape and countryside. But what sort of visual journey was Ambrogio asking the Nove to make? The murals have become one of arts great puzzles, challenging scholars and the public alike. They have been studied as symbols and allegories of abstract political concepts in which good and bad government are starkly juxtaposed; scant attention, however, has been paid to the images themselves. This book attempts finally to illuminate Ambrogios pictorial strategy by reading it in light of the Hymn to Justice inscribed upon the walls. The frescoes enrich the poets message, subtly changing and even subverting it.
