These may be age-old questions, but I aim, in this project, to offer a new approach to answering them.In part two of this project, I aim to actually provide my own answer to the two fundamental questions with which I began and according to the structure I outline in Liberty. Which is to say, this is the answer I provide to you (and everyone else) to judge regarding how successfully it answers those age old political questions. In short, I argue that these are the changes in actual, material, human conditions - the necessary set of ‘alterable human practices’ to borrow a phrase of Isaiah Berlin’s - required to create an enduring, desirable and just ‘perpetual peace’ on earth. In other words, this is not, in Kant’s phrase, a ‘philosophical sketch’ on how perpetual peace might be attained, but, by focusing on the everyday, material, relationships and conditions which create and foster conflict and injustice across the globe today, I hope to provide a ‘material sketch’ as to how human beings might live in successfully together in conditions of peaceful cooperation and freedom over time. Biofuels offer a more sustainable alternative to fossil fuels as they are derived from biomass that can be produced renewably. First generation biofuels posed significant problems because they were either derived from biomass that could be used for food, or that would compete for land with food crops. Widespread uptake of these fuels would have driven up food prices and potentially lead to food shortages. Subsequent research has focused on methods that do not cause this problem. A promising direction is the use of waste biomass that comes from agriculture, food processing and other industries. By using these resources that would otherwise become waste not only can we produce fuels more sustainably, but we can also reduce the amount of waste needing disposal. Covering fuel types from liquid transportation fuels to biohydrogen, this book provides a thorough overview of how waste biomass can be introduced for a variety of applications. What is meant by sacred landscape? How can ancient sacred landscapes, greatly eroded by time, be reconstructed? In the landscape, how did the religious dimension relate to the economic, social and political dimensions? In this book, scholars with many years experience of archaeological approaches to Greek religion offer answers to these questions, by presenting a variety of case studies. The examples selected relate to various regions of the Greek world (Attica, Arcadia, Boeotia, Euboea, Asia Minor) and the periods covered range from the Late Bronze Age to the Byzantine era. Several chapters are based on survey data, which are examined in relation to written sources. Topics covered include the development of sacred landscapes over the long term and the integration of major sanctuaries into their wider environment (Olympia, Kalapodi, Artemision at Amarynthos). The contributions reveal different understandings of a sacred landscape. As a modern concept, the latter is examined in a methodological introductory chapter. Zooarchaeology of Ancient Greek Sanctuaries in Southwestern Sicily addresses the topic of ancient Greek sacrificial practices that were performed in the western colonies of Sicily between the 7th and 3rd centuries BC. The approach is primarily centered on zooarchaeology, focusing on the analysis of faunal assemblages derived from three crucial sacred areas associated with the outstanding poleis of Selinus and Akragas. Adopting a comprehensive interdisciplinary approach, the study incorporates current methods in zooarchaeology alongside taphonomic investigations to explore how animals were used for ritual purposes. By repositioning animals within their central role in ancient sacrificial practice, the results have enriched our understanding of the various ritual activities that took place in Selinus and Akragas, providing a more complete view of how religious beliefs were expressed by the ancient inhabitants of these cities. The analyses have confirmed customary patterns of animal sacrifice as reported by literary and epigraphic sources (e.g. thysia and holocaust) as well as shedding light on less frequent ritual practices followed by ancient Greek communities (e.g. foundation sacrifices). Thanks to the large quantity of remains analyzed, the results go beyond the characterization of the sacrificial practice performed in the two poleis, providing significant insights from an extra-regional perspective involving the wider ancient Greek world. The book constitutes the first synthesis on the zooarchaeology of Greek Sicily, providing a substantial amount of new data which fills a noted void in zooarchaeological research due to the still limited use of faunal assemblage analysis in defining the religious landscape of ancient Greek Sicily. Sieges and siege-related activities played a significant role in the development of Romes power in Hispania and Gaul during the late-Roman Republic. They were made possible by the efficient Roman military machine available to commanders during this period a constantly adapting and improving army, highly regularised encampments and lethal artillery. The narration of Caesars sieges by Caesar himself and his literary successor Hirtius, makes them seem unusual and inventive, probably to emphasise Caesars brilliance as a military commander. They were not that different or new though, as shown by the close similarity between established Hellenistic siege practices and the general evidence of sieges in Gaul and Hispania. It can often seem that siege fieldworks were operation-specific to sieges, but essentially just mining and ramps were siege-only techniques. Most of the other works were simply implementations of the normal repertoire of the armys fortifications, just as the artillery and weaponry were used in all types of conflicts. This becomes apparent when looking at the wide variety of Roman military installations emerging in the Iberian Peninsula. Sieges are not mere mechanical exercises in military technology and tactics, as often seems in academic discussions, but people are at the centre of it all, with troops and besieged suffering alike. Sieges are consequently considered here within warfare ecology the severe environmental impact, the suffering health and well-being of all involved, even changes to the smellscape, much of which continued for the besieged long after the siege had ended and troops had departed. Awarding a Crown of Life to those who had remained steadfast against lusts of the flesh was a popular custom that was prevalent throughout post-Reformation Britain and Europe. The crown was also celebrated as a substitute wedding crown by those who believed in the marriage in heaven of the soul and bridegroom, Jesus Christ. The shape and construction of maidens crowns varied from three-dimensional crown shapes to two-dimensional diadems, chaplet garlands or wreaths. Some were buried with the deceased while others were hung within the parish church. In Germany, the custom was practised by both Protestant and Catholic denominations. Each crown was churched in some way, yet there is no mention of them in either Anglican or Catholic Canon Law. Nonetheless they form a fundamental part of a popular but unsung burial custom. In this book, experts in the fields of history, archaeology and conservation provide a European comparative study of the custom. Chapters explore its emergence, history and cultural significance, as well as the variety and construction techniques of the crowns themselves. Archaeological overviews and case studies shed further light on a locally diverse and dynamic practice. Conservation issues are highlighted in the study of a crown from Theydon Mount, Essex. This monograph details the 2019 Centre for Community Archaeology excavation of Fowlers Pottery, a nineteenth century pottery manufacturing site located in the townland of Derrybuoy, just outside Coalisland, Co. Tyrone. The site produced coarse earthenware pottery, a type which has received little academic attention to date, and this publication will therefore be of great use in advancing our limited knowledge of the coarse, utilitarian pottery used every day in nineteenth century households. Four distinct vessel forms were produced in four possible decorative styles, showing a specialised range of production which appears to have primarily targeted the rural market. Several key features of the pottery were also identified and are described at length, including the kiln, drying room and clay extraction pit, as well as large quantities of brick and kiln furniture. The narrative is greatly supplemented by historical records including personal letters, census returns and local testimony which offer a high-resolution view of precisely how and when the pottery operated. While other Post-Medieval pottery production sites have been excavated in Ireland previously, this is the second example of a nineteenth century kiln producing coarse earthenware pottery to be excavated, and the first to receive publication, meaning that this site is of critical importance to advancing our knowledge of local economy and manufacturing in the period. Of all the great kingdoms that flourished in Africa, the Kongo is one of the most famous. It remains an important historical and cultural reference for Africans and their diaspora. The KongoKing inter-university project (2012-2016), funded by the European Research Council, aimed, through an interdisciplinary approach, to understand the origin of the kingdom and to shed light on the phenomena of political centralization, economic integration and linguistic evolution that took place there. A significant number of Holocene societies throughout the world have resorted at one time or another to the making of paints or carvings on different places (tombs, rock-shelters or caves, openair outcrops). The aim of the session A11e. Public images, private readings: multi-perspective approaches to the post-Palaeolithic rock art, which was held within the XVII World UISPP Congress (Burgos, September 1-7 2014), was to put together the experiences of specialists from different areas of the Iberian Peninsula and the World. The approaches ranged from the archaeological definition of the artistic phenomena and their socioeconomic background to those concerning themselves with the symbolic and ritual nature of those practices, including the definition of the audience to which the graphic manifestations were addressed and the potential role of the latter in the making up of social identities and the enforcement of territorial claims.
