Kinship & Community rescues and elevates the work of more than a dozen photographers who helped produce this abundant visual culture, including A. B. Bell, Marion Butts, Hiram Dotson, Elnora Frazier, Curtis Humphrey, Alonzo Jordan, and Benny Joseph.These dedicated local photographers, typically operating as small businesses, recorded the activities and events of their communities: parades, award ceremonies, coronations, and other celebrations of everyday achievements. Many of them also contributed to national and regional publications, primarily Texas’s numerous Black newspapers. While those contributions did include some coverage of civil-rights leaders and picket lines, their main emphasis was on the quotidian accomplishments of a vibrant and self-sufficient Black culture—accomplishments all the more remarkable for a wider context of entrenched racial and political oppression. Until fairly recently, genetic information was used primarily in the diagnosis of relatively rare genetic diseases, such as cystic fibrosis and Huntington's Disease, but a transformation in the use of genetic and genomic information is underway. While many predictions have been made that genomics will transform medicine, to date few of these promising discoveries have resulted in actual applications in medicine and health. The Institute of Medicine's Roundtable on Translating Genomic-Based Research for Health, established in 2007, held its first workshop to address the following questions: 1. Are there different pathways by which new scientific findings move from the research setting into health care? 2. If so, what are the implications of those different pathways for genomics? 3. What can we learn from the translation of other new technologies as we seek to understand the translation of genome science into health care? Mummies uncovered at archaeological sites worldwide have proven invaluable to the fi elds of history, archaeology, and anthropology. Ancient Water Supply and Management Systems in the Western Mediterranean brings together a wide range of approaches dealing with the connection between settlements and water from the Iron Age to the Late Antique period.
