Mobilise le 20 aot 1942 aux Etats-Unis, la 12th US Army Air Force fut envoye dans un premier temps en Grande Bretagne avant de partir pour l'Afrique du Nord o elle participa activement l'opration "Torch", le dbarquement alli en Algrie et au Maroc qui dbuta le 8 novembre 1942. Aprs avoir contribu au dpart des forces de l'Axe en Tunisie, les avions de la 12th Air Force, chasseurs, bombardiers moyens et lourds, prirent ensuite part au dbarquement en Sicile en juillet 1943, puis ceux d'Italie, dans les mois suivants. Outre son action constante dans la Pninsule, la 12th AF joua galement un rle non ngligeable lors du dbarquement en Provence qui dbuta le 15 aot 1944. Ses groupes de bombardiers lgers et de chasseurs-bombardiers bass en Corse et en Sardaigne poursuivirent ensuite leurs oprations en France et dans le nord de l'Italie, suivant la progression des Allis vers le nord jusqu' la reddition des forces allemandes d'Italie, le 29 avril 1945. La 15th Air Force fut forme le 1er novembre 1943 pour oprer sur le front mditerranen, ses groupes de chasse et de bombardement - certains d'entre eux provenant de la 12th AF - tant bass essentiellement dans le sud de l'Italie. Ses principaux objectifs taient les raffineries de ptrole et les usines de construction aronautique adverses et on estime que, par son action, le rseau de transport ennemi fut paralys sur plus de la moiti de l'Europe occupe, tandis que l'activit de raffinage tait rduite de plus de la moiti et la production des chasseurs divise par trois. Aprs avoir soutenu l'avance allie en Italie lors des batailles d'Anzio, de Monte Cassino et de Rome, la 15th AF fut charge, la fin du conflit, du rapatriement de nombreux prisonniers de guerre avant d'tre finalement dissoute le 15 septembre 1945.
