The only official biography of fashion and film icon and humanitarian Audrey Hepburn, with the actresss personal history, insights from her family about her philosophy of life, and an intimate picture of how she lived outside of the public eye. There are few celebrities of yesterday or today as iconic as Audrey Hepburn. From humble beginnings, growing up in the Netherlands and nearly dying of malnutrition while assisting the Dutch resistance during World War II, she would go on to be one of the biggest movies stars in history. Best known for her work in classic and renowned films such as Roman Holiday, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Charade, and My Fair Lady, Audrey won just about every award in show business, earning the coveted EGOT designation. Offscreen, she became a darling of the public with her unique, trendsetting fashion sense (for which she also won awards), then later in life, she became the most high-profile Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her humanitarian work. More than thirty years after her death, this aspirational, inspirational, and hugely talented woman is still revered as the epitome of style, sophistication, and beauty. But while more than 300 books have been published about the phenomenon that was Audrey Hepburn, none have truly gotten under the skin of the woman who emerged from the rubble of war to become a symbol for female emancipation, resilience, and authenticity. Ranked as one of the greatest screen legends of all time, she was so much more than that and her legacy of feminism and compassion is what would have made her most proud. INTIMATE AUDREY will take the reader behind the camera to meet the real woman, the survivor, as told by those who knew and loved her. Autorid: Sean Hepburn Ferrer, Wendy Holden

Two renowned investment advisors and authors of the bestseller The Great Reckoning bring to light both currents of disaster and the potential for prosperity and renewal in the face of radical changes in human history as we move into the next century. The Sovereign Individual details strategies necessary for adapting financially to the next phase of Western civilization.Few observers of the late twentieth century have their fingers so presciently on the pulse of the global political and economic realignment ushering in the new millennium as do James Dale Davidson and Lord William Rees-Mogg. Their bold prediction of disaster on Wall Street in Blood in the Streets was borne out by Black Tuesday. In their ensuing bestsellar, The Great Reckoning, published just weeks before the coup attempt against Gorbachev, they analyzed the pending collapse of the Soviet Union and foretold the civil war in Yugoslavia and other events that have proved to be among the most searing developments of the past few years. In The Sovereign Individual, Davidson and Rees-Mogg explore the greatest economic and political transition in centuries - the shift from an industrial to an information-based society. This transition, which they have termed "the fourth stage of human society," will liberate individuals as never before, irrevocably altering the power of government. This outstanding book will replace false hopes and fictions with new understanding and clarified values.

The runaway New York Times bestseller that shows American parents the secrets behind France's amazingly well-behaved children, from the author of There Are No Grown-ups."On questions of how to live, the French never disappoint. . . . Maybe it all starts with childhood. That is the conclusion that readers may draw from Bringing Up Bébé.” —The Wall Street Journal"I’ve been a parent now for more than eight years, and—confession—I’ve never actually made it all the way through a parenting book. But I found Bringing Up Bébé to be irresistible.” —SlateWhen American journalist Pamela Druckerman had a baby in Paris, she didn't aspire to become a "French parent.” But she noticed that French children slept through the night by two or three months old. They ate braised leeks. They played by themselves while their parents sipped coffee. And yet French kids were still boisterous, curious, and creative. Why? How? With a notebook stashed in her diaper bag, Druckerman set out to investigate—and wound up sparking a national debate on parenting. Researched over three years and written in her warm, funny voice, Bringing Up Bébé is deeply wise, charmingly told, and destined to become a classic resource for American parents.

People ask me how come I'm still alive, and I don't know what to say. When I was growing up, if you'd have put me up against a wall with the other kids from my street and asked me which one of us was gonna make it to the age of sixty, with five kids and four grandkids and houses in Buckinghamshire and California, I wouldn't have put money on me, no f**king way. From the telegraph and telephone in the 1800s to the internet and social media in our own day, the public has welcomed new communication systems. Whenever people gain more power to share information, the assumption goes, society prospers. Superbloom tells a startlingly different story. As communication becomes more mechanized and efficient, it breeds confusion more than understanding, strife more than harmony. Media technologies all too often bring out the worst in us. A celebrated commentator on the human consequences of technology, Nicholas Carr reorients the conversation around modern communication, challenging some of our most cherished beliefs about self-expression, free speech, and media democratization. He reveals how messaging apps strip nuance from conversation, how "digital crowding" erodes empathy and triggers aggression, how online political debates narrow our minds and distort our perceptions, and how advances in AI are further blurring the already hazy line between fantasy and reality. Even as Carr shows how tech companies and their tools of connection have failed us, he forces us to confront inconvenient truths about our own nature. The human psyche, it turns out, is profoundly ill-suited to the "superbloom" of information that technology has unleashed. With rich psychological insights and vivid examples drawn from history and science, Superbloom provides both a panoramic view of how media shapes society and an intimate examination of the fate of the self in a time of radical dislocation. It may be too late to change the system, Carr counsels, but it's not too late to change ourselves.

A Rough Trade and Clash Book of the Year 'Excellent, detailed (. . .] Hip-hop writer SH Fernando Jr benefits from an insider's understanding of the milieu and provides generous context.' Kitty Empire, Observer On December 31, 2020, the world was shocked to learn about the death of hip-hop legend MF DOOM. Born in London and raised in the suburban enclave of Long Beach, New York, Daniel Dumile Jr.'s love of cartoons and comic books would soon turn him into one of hip-hop's most enigmatic, prolific, and influential figures. The Chronicles of DOOM: Unraveling Rap's Masked Iconoclast recounts the rise, fall, redemption, and untimely demise of MF DOOM. Broken down into five sections: The Man, The Myth, The Mask, The Music, and The Legend, journalist S. H. Fernando chronicles the life of Daniel Dumile Jr., beginning in the house he grew up in in Long Beach, NY, through to the mysterious, masked icon that he was to become. Centring the music, Fernando deftly lays out the history of east-coast rap against DOOM's life story and dissects the personas, projects, tracks, and lyrics that led to his immortality. Including exclusive interviews with those who worked closely with him, the book provides an unknown, intimate, behind the scenes look into the life of MF DOOM, a supervillain on stage and hero to those who paid attention.
The left views alienation as something to be resisted or overcome, but could it actually form the basis of our emancipation? We often think of our existential and political projects as attempts to overcome or eradicate alienation: therapists imagine that they help patients to attain self-identity; political revolutionaries strive for a society in which they can live in harmony with others; ecological activists work toward a future form of existence in touch with the rest of the natural world. In Embracing Alienation, Todd McGowan offers a completely different take on alienation, claiming that the effort to overcome it is not a radical response to the current state of things but a failure to see the constitutive power of alienation for all of us. Instead of trying to overcome alienation and accede to an unalienated existence, it argues, we should instead redeem alienation as an existential and political program. Engaging with Shakespeare's great tragedies, contemporary films such as Don't Worry Darling, and even what occurs on a public bus, as well as thinkers such as Descartes, Hegel, and Marx, McGowan provides a concrete elaboration of how alienation frees people from their situation. Relying on the tradition of dialectical thought and psychoanalytic theory, Embracing Alienation reveals a new way of conceiving how we measure progress - or even if progress should be the aim at all. In the aftermath of the Second World War relations between the Soviet Union and their former allies in the West quickly soured and developed into the Cold War. The USSR was at a huge disadvantage at sea and sought to redress this balance through the equipping of many of its warships with nuclear weapons ranging from torpedoes to strategic missiles. Doomsday Torpedoes examines the history of these weapons and their live testing during the Cold War.The US Navy maintained a large fleet of aircraft carriers capable of encircling the Soviet Union and delivering airborne nuclear attack from many different directions. The Soviets were in dire need of finding ways to neutralise this threat, preferably with a single powerful blow: torpedoes with nuclear warheads as well as nuclear-tipped anti-ship missiles offered such a capability. Doomsday Torpedoes describes the development and fielding of such weapons by the Soviets and their navy in detail, along with strategic nuclear weapons launched from the sea, primarily submarine launched ballistic missiles. In addition, the Soviet development of submarines, as the primary launch platforms of naval nuclear weapons is examined. The main focus of Doomsday Torpedoes is the time period from 1952 up until the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty of 1963. This book examines the events of that era, including those of the Cuban Missile Crisis in which Soviet submarines came close to firing nuclear-armed torpedoes in a chain of events that came extraordinarily close to initiating the Third World War. This colourful study describes and illustrates the troops of the Seleucid Empire in West Asia throughout its turbulent 250-year existence. This colourful study describes and illustrates the troops of the Seleucid Empire in West Asia throughout its turbulent 250-year existence.Founded by the Macedonian general Seleucus I Nicator in 312 BC in the wake of the death of Alexander the Great 11 years previously, the Seleucid Empire came to control much of the territory conquered by Alexander in western Asia, and at its height reached from the Mediterranean to Afghanistan. The colourful armies fielded by Seleucus I and his successors are described and illustrated in this absorbing study of a major power at war in the ancient world. As the fortunes of their realm ebbed and flowed, Seleucid kings deployed vast armies recruited from diverse peoples that drew upon an array of military traditions, including the mighty phalanx, war elephants, scythed chariots and camel-mounted archers. Illustrated throughout with photographs and drawings as well as eight pages of specially commissioned artwork, this fascinating study draws upon a range of literary, archaeological and artistic sources to explore the organization, tactics, weapons and equipment of the varied units of Seleucid armies over two-and-a-half turbulent centuries in the ancient world.
