During the Reformation of the sixteenth century, the status of prostitution evolved from being seen as a trade or a profession, however marginalized, into a source of malignant temptation; the prostitute ceased to be a sex worker who sought to alleviate her economic insecurity through commercial sex, and became a vain, selfish woman who desired wealth and opulence, and who led upstanding married men astray and thus threatened their souls and the moral and civic orders of a reformed society. Sex workers became the literal embodiment of the decadence and corruption that threatened to engulf the world as epitomized by the richly attired Whore of Babylon astride the seven-headed Beast. Yet, the study of late-medieval human trafficking makes clear that vanity, selfishness, and spiritual malignance had little to do with prostitution and the commercial sex industry. New dialects develop out of isolation as well as out of contact with other varieties. Thereby they are influenced by ongoing socio-cultural changes and, in turn, affect culture and way of speaking. This paper will summarize results of latest linguistic research on two ethnic dialects ¿ Chicano English, a Hispanic variety of American English and Türkendeutsch , a relatively new variety of German. First, both varieties will be presented with regard to their history, their structural features and sociolinguistic aspects, starting with Chicano English. After outlining characteristics of both individually, major similarities and differences will be highlighted. Finally, difficulties in the context of this paper will be discussed and future prospects will be given.

The volume collects a series of lectures given by the renowned French thinker Michel Foucault late in his career. The book is composed of two parts: a talk, "Parresia," delivered at the University of Grenoble in 1982, and a series of lectures entitled "Discourse and Truth," given at the University of California, Berkeley in 1983, which appears here for the first time in its full and correct form. Together, they provide an unprecedented account of Foucault's reading of the Greek concept of parresia, often translated as "truth-telling" or "frank speech." In his analysis of parresia, Foucault both advances his project of a history of the present and paves the way for a genealogy of the critical attitude in modern and contemporary societies. Essay from the year 2010 in the subject History of Europe - Newer History, European Unification, grade: A-, University CEU San Pablo Madrid, language: English, abstract: At first glance, the historical Jews do not seem to have been a group that was determining the architectural, visual and spatial outlook of cities ¿ in Europe or overseas alike. In fact, as Rudolf Klein put it, ¿the Jews were seldom in a position ¿ save in ancient and modern Israel ¿ to impose architecture on others¿; partially because they ¿moved so many times in history that they lacked the preconditions for a continuous architectural evolution¿. Moreover, architecture has always been considered a Jewish 'specialty' much less then, say, literature, medicine or business. However, I will show that a closer look at the connections between the Jews and the urban space is an important and promising enterprise that tells us a lot about the Jews, the city ¿ and also about Gentiles. The focus of this paper is on the fin-de-siècle period (late 19th ¿ early 20th centuries) and on the two capital cities of Vienna and St. Petersburg ¿ and for some reasons. Both cities were capitals of the empires (Austria-Hungary and the Russian Empire, respectively), that were powerful enough to be a major military and financial competitors, but still technologically and economically backward. The transition to modernity in both capitals was late and problematic, and the Jewish communities have faced a long and persistent anti-Semitism. In both contexts, however, the Jews were especially successful and over-represented in the most modern professions ¿ and also more visible in the rapidly changing modern urban space. Thus, this paper also compliments to the perspective that analyzes ¿Jewish space¿ in fin-de-siècle capitals ¿ and brings a comparative element into the picture. Accordingly, in this paper I will look at the Jewish experiences in turn-of-the-century Vienna and St. Petersburg to compare the visions, images and representations of the ¿Jewish space¿ in the two imperial capitals that were struggling through modernity. I am particularly interested in residential, occupational and religious aspects of the ¿Jewish space¿ as these were the factors that determined the everyday life cycle of particular Jews. Additionally, I want to trace the potential influence that the Jewish patterns of space organization may have exercised upon Gentile ones around turn of the century.

From 1884 on, Germany established a colonial empire in the Pacific islands. By 1914 it stretched over a vast area, covering a myriad of islands in Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia. While the number of Germans was relatively small, many Germans arrived being equipped with the most recent technology of the time. Usually, this included a camera. It is surprising, how many photographs were taken by government officials, missionaries and private individuals such as planters and businesspeople. This book presents Kainkain Piksa taken during the German colonial period. While some of them depict various aspects of German colonial rule, this book is more than pictorial evidence of the German colonial period in the Pacific islands. It is an important photographic source of Pacific Islanders and how they lived more than a hundred years ago - in what today are the Federated States of Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, the Northern Marianas, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa and the Solomons. Kainkain Piksa shows ordinary people as well as local and Pacific celebrities of the time, whose names and deeds are still known, albeit just to their ethnic group or family. Not a few Pacific Islanders will find portraits of men and women who are actually their ancestors. Further photographs demonstrate the ancient state of places which have been transformed so much that they are hardly recognizable anymore. Kainkain Piksa is a collection of the most interesting photographs Hermann J. Hiery discovered during his many years of research in numerous government, mission, and private archives. Many are published here for the first time.

I wanted to give it a try although I expected another depressing representation of ¿Africä suffering from and dying of HIV/AIDS, as it has been almost common on the World AIDS Day. It didn¿t fulfill my expectations, in no way. I was touched, I was inspired and I wanted to know more about the situation of especially women and children affected by HIV/AIDS and the ¿Memory Project¿ of Uganda. On the basis of this experience, in this paper I will have a closer look at Uganda, at the situation of parents, in particular of women living with HIV/AIDS on the one hand, and on the other hand at the situation of the children affected by the disease and who are left behind after the death of their parents. First I will start with an overview of HIV/AIDS in Uganda. Then I will provide an insight into the situation of women in Uganda in association with the epidemic, also concerning the law on domenstic and gender-based violence as on of the main reason for new and disproportionate infections of females, and the impact on children. Furthermore I will introduce the ¿Memory Project¿ and its core, the ¿Memory Books¿, which was started in Uganda through the national NGO NACWOLA (National Community of Women Living with HIV/AIDS), and point out the importance for both of them, parents and children. The aim of my paper will be to reflect the situation of women and children considering HIV/AIDS, and to provide an insight into NACWOLAs ¿Memory Project¿ and its ¿Memory Books¿. I want to overview the structure and to give a review on the goals of this program, as well as on its offered possibilities and maybe inherent difficulties.
