When a fall from the mast leaves Alba Marsh unable to sail, he finally has the chance to run away from his family debts in search of a better life. He hopes to reunite with his mother, Edythe, where they always promised to meet if things went awry, but finding the small, secluded, secretive town of Moon Harbor proves a greater challenge than Alba ever expected. Worse, upon arriving, no one seems to know anyone by the name Edythe Marsh at all. Taking a job as the local lighthouse keeper while waiting for her to come, Alba attempts to find peace in his stolen freedom--but the sea has other plans. First come the shadows, then the voices, then watery trails left on the floor while he sleeps. He's inundated with erotic dreams of sirens calling out to him, and distant singing haunts his waking hours, all while the townspeople claim to hear nothing. After a debtor catches up with him and he's forced to dispose of their body in the harbor, Alba is interrupted by Eridanys, the last merrow of Moon Harbor, who curses him from leaving until he can find out what happened to the other merrow that once filled those waters. Eridanys' demands, both mental and physical, are exhausting and endless--but as their relationship deepens, and Moon Harbor's long-kept secrets are butterflied open to see, it becomes clear they may both be prey to the town in ways neither of them ever anticipated.

Literature Review from the year 2011 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: A, Atlantic International University (School of Business and Economics), course: Seminar Cultural Development 1D, language: English, abstract: The book ¿The Hidden Connections¿ by Fritjof Capra is premised on the study of living organisms. It is based on Capräs understanding of life as growing inevitably out of increasing complex of cell molecular relationships. Capräs belief is that life is a chain of networks and it is these networks that are the very essence of life. Capra tries to conceptualize this network concept in living systems by presenting a framework integrating the biological, cognitive and social dimensions of life. By integrating these three dimensions of life, Capra tries to justify the essence of the interconnections that equally exist in various human and social organizations. He does so by providing a systematic approach to life¿s critical issues which continue to have negative impacts on human and social organizations globally. The analysis brings up certain aspects of Capräs views of life and how society needed to be organized. These range from his urge for organizations to take a systematic approach to new ways of doing business by creating value systems and need to strive towards a sustainable society by redesigning technologies and social institutions without undue distraction of our natural environment. The analytical view to most of Capräs views of life is that these views may be situational and not binding to every humane and organizational activity of life. The conclusive view of the book is that it is not scientifically oriented to the level of a non - scientific mind as it brings with it a lot of human and organizational implications that hinge on social, cultural and religious aspects of life. Notwithstanding this fact, the overall scope of the book seems to cater for all intellectual areas of life and is masterpiece of its kind.

"Steven Nadler's knowledge of the many influences acting on Spinoza is profound. He is as sensitive to Spinoza's reactions to Descartes and Maimonides as to the philosopher's fears of the conservative religious forces that were threatening the Dutch Republic of his day. The wide context that Nadler provides makes for a reading of Spinoza's treatise which is unfailingly rich, nuanced, and illuminating."--Rebecca Newberger Goldstein, author of Betraying Spinoza: The Renegade Jew Who Gave Us Modernity"If there is a single theme that runs throughout Spinoza's writings, Steven Nadler says, 'it is the liberation from bondage, whether psychological, political, or religious.' Spinoza's importance as a philosopher--maybe as the philosopher of modernity--hinges on that. This Amsterdam Jew was one of the grandest and boldest mold-breakers of all time. Nadler gives us a clean, crisp, indispensible account of what made Spinoza's Treatise so revolutionary."--Russell Shorto, author of Descartes' Bones"A Book Forged in Hell is more than just an excellent and highly readable introduction to one of the most important texts of philosophy and political thought. Steven Nadler provides an eloquent portrait of Spinoza's treatise, placing it firmly in its historical, religious, political, and philosophical setting."--Jonathan Israel, author of A Revolution of the Mind: Radical Enlightenment and the Intellectual Origins of Modern Democracy"This is an excellent book. Steven Nadler's wonderfully elegant and fluid writing style makes difficult ideas accessible and exciting without watering them down. A prime virtue of the book is that it provides just enough biographical and historical background to make the philosophy come alive and to reveal what a dramatic work Spinoza's treatise is."--Michael Della Rocca, Yale University

Writing with the telegraphic swiftness and microscopic sensitivity that have made her one of our most distinguished journalists, Joan Didion creates a shimmering novel of innocence and evil.A Book of Common Prayer is the story of two American women in the derelict Central American nation of Boca Grande. Grace Strasser-Mendana controls much of the country's wealth and knows virtually all of its secrets; Charlotte Douglas knows far too little. "Immaculate of history, innocent of politics," she has come to Boca Grande vaguely and vainly hoping to be reunited with her fugitive daughter. As imagined by Didion, her fate is at once utterly particular and fearfully emblematic of an age of conscienceless authority and unfathomable violence.

In "A Book of Five Rings," Miyamoto Musashi takes the reader into a world filled to the brim with devotion, self-respect, discipline, honesty and purity of thought. Written originally for warriors and samurai in a completely different time and culture, Musashi's book provides a remarkable source of inspiration for self-development today. His teachings are concise and to the point. ¿He uses phrases like "you must understand this" and "you must practice diligently" and explains only general, but unquestionable and fundamental, concepts of the Way of the Warrior. While some of his guidelines are are not directly applicable in our time and age, those about striving to achieve improvement on the inside as well as the outside couldn't be more on target. Taken literally this book is about how to become an efficient, albeit enlightened, killer. It's value comes from reading between the lines--lines which speak volumes.

Peter Kingsley's Book of Life is the culmination and completion of an extraordinary body of work. As a historian he has revolutionized our understanding of ancient philosophy and religion; as a mystic, he introduced us to what philosophy and religion are meant to be. Hauntingly personal, almost autobiographical, this is not the story of one man's life. It's the secret story of us all. Beyond scepticism and cynicism, belief or imagination, A Book of Life offers a roadmap to reality by showing how it still is possible to experience the sacred truths our ancestors knew and lived -- that inside every human being lies the universe and that life itself, in all its splendour, is what lies behind our tiny lives. This little book is a wide open door into the timeless magic and unfathomable mystery our modern world has managed to forget. Even so, to encourage anyone to read it now would be totally wrong -- because it was written to be read not by people today but in a distant future.

From Flow, the groundbreaking international "magazine that takes its time," comes the first big book in a publishing partnership that celebrates mindfulness, creativity, beautiful illustration, a love of paper, and life's little pleasures. Flow is unique for a magazine in how it mixes articles, inspiring quotes, and what the editors call "goodies"--bound-in cards, mini-journals, stickers, posters, blank papers for collaging, and more--giving it a distinctly handcrafted, collectible feeling.A Book That Takes Its Time is both a book about mindfulness and a book that literally inspires mindfulness. It's like a meditation retreat between two covers. You can't hurry through it; it's the anti-page-turner. It's a book that makes you stop to savor, play with, and appreciate all the lovely and interesting detours that hands-on activities provide. Read an article on the benefits of journaling--then come to "The Joy of One Thing at a Time Notebook" tucked into the book. An essay on the power of being grateful is followed by pages of illustrated "Beautiful Moments" cards to fill in, punch out, save, and revisit. Suddenly being grateful becomes a habit. Readers will learn hand-lettering, the basics of collaging, even how to meditate while running. There's never been a book like A Book That Takes Its Time, a book that mixes reading and doing, to help readers live a more thoughtful life and have so much fun in the process.

It's been over forty years since I immigrated to Sydney. I am a Korean Australian poet. In the poem You and I are, I reflect on the division between South and North Korea. More than seventy years have passed since countless families were separated, and I wrote the poem to hold that long sorrow. Letting go of war and politics, I look into the world of a father, the head of a family-my own father, who sat in a small room surrounded by four walls, staring at a hopeless Wall while drawing up hopeful plans for our future. One day, not even realizing spring had come, I saw The Cornelian Cherry blossoms and thought, "Ah... so it's spring," and in that moment, the children moved forward with their lives, tasting The Joy of Being One. Even though Life offers no clear answers, I paddle my little boat in search of friendship. That boat drifts beneath the rising sun at Nelson Bay Beach, missing the mountains and streams of home, until a wave becomes a brush and paints a Hibiscus syriacus blossom on the rocks. Before I know it, it's autumn. When I long for the narrow paths of home lined with The Cosmos flowers, I find myself thinking: perhaps those cosmos wear rainbow hanbok and are counting stars on an autumn night. That longing becomes heartache, and heartache becomes The Resurrection Lilies blooming on the hillside. Leaning there, I gaze toward the sky over my homeland, hoping to feel the wind blowing from that direction-yet who could truly know such a feeling? I stand in that wind and look toward mist-covered peaks. On a day of summer rain, a woman's nobility blossoms like the Blue Plum flowers. Her life, like a bush warbler perched on a thin branch, never ceases its quiet lament. Then, in an instant, she scatters in the winter wind, becoming tears. Meanwhile, her daughter enters college and, sitting beside Camellias in the winter wind, she begins to learn a love as pure and deep as falling snow. And now, as I gaze at the red twilight, I reflect on the sorrows and joys of life. Recalling the people who shaped our world and the histories they forged, I find that the evening sky quietly stains the life of a writer lost in thought, and the clink of red wine glasses echoes with poetic resonance.

A Boy's Own Story traces an unnamed narrator's coming-of-age during the 1950s. With an introduction by Alan Hollinghurst, author of The Line of Beauty. It was his power that stupefied me and made me regard my knowledge as nothing more than hired cleverness he might choose to show off at a dinner party.Beset by aloof parents, a cruel sister, and relentless mocking from his peers, the unamed boy struggles with his sexuality, seeking consolation in art and literature, and in his own fantastic imagination as he fills his head with romantic expectations. The result is a book of exquisite poignancy and humour that moves towards a conclusion which will allow the boy to leave behind his childhood forever.Originally published in 1982 as the first of Edmund White's trilogy of autobiographical novels, A Boy's Own Story became an instant classic for its pioneering portrayal of homosexuality. Lyrical and powerfully evocative, this is an American literary treasure.'Edmund White has crossed The Catcher in the Rye with De Profundis, J. D. Salinger with Oscar Wilde, to create an extraordinary novel' - New York TimesPart of the Picador Collection, a series celebrating fifty years of Picador books and showcasing the best of modern literature.
Nothing ruins a lovely house party like bloody murder. At the decrepit old age of six-and-twenty, Miss Beatrice Hyde-Clare has virtually no hope of landing a husband. An orphan living off her relatives' charity, her job is to sit with her needlework and to keep her thoughts to herself. When Bea receives an invitation to an elegant country party, she intends to do just that. Not even the presence of the aggravatingly handsome Duke of Kesgrave could lead this young lady to scandal. True, she might wish to pour her bowl of turtle soup on his aristocratic head - however, she would never actually do it. But a lady can fantasize. But, when she stumbles upon the dead body of another houseguest, all Bea's good intentions fly out the well-appointed window. Although the magistrate declares it a suicide, she knows better. Time for some very unladylike behavior.
A mystical dialogue between a male author and his creation, this posthumous work has never before been translated, and is a book of particular beauty and strangeness.A mystical dialogue between a male author (a thinly disguised Clarice Lispector) and his/her creation, a woman named Angela, this posthumous work has never before been translated. Lispector did not even live to see it published. At her death, a mountain of fragments remained to be “structured” by Olga Borelli. These fragments form a dialogue between a god-like author who infuses the breath of life into his creation: the speaking, breathing, dying creation herself, Angela Pralini. The work’s almost occult appeal arises from the perception that if Angela dies, Clarice will have to die as well. And she did.

This novel collection from Wael Almahdi is English poetry at some of its finest. It is global, transcending both time and style-as Flamur Vehapi states in his foreword, "a true gem in the world of poetry." Readers may find themselves at turns intrigued, inspired, deeply contemplative, and smiling.Almahdi's work culminates in the creation of Mashriqi English, a poetic register that merges the expressive depth of contemporary English with the multifaceted, centuries-old Perso-Arabic poetic tradition."By seamlessly blending Arabic, Persian, and Urdu in English verse, Wael Almahdi has proven himself an accomplished bard and an innovator, pushing the boundaries of English poetry, and challenging notions of English as an "un-Islamic" language. Mashriqi is new but grounded in a centuries-old tradition of Muslims incorporating Perso-Arabic vocabulary into their native languages. This novel endeavor deserves our attention." -Muhammad Ali Mojaradi, author of The Flame of Love: Rumi's 100 Most Passionate Poems"With open arms, Almahdi welcomes us to the future of poetry: multilingual and marrying global styles and tropes that some would consider incompatible (true lovers, however, have always known otherwise). As if simply lowering the net on a tennis court, Almahdi's compositions gleefully hop over the borders of past and present, east and west, the daily and eternal. This is a masterpiece."-Crescent Reviews"Wael Almahdi's debut poetry collection introduces a confident and eloquent voice to the contemporary literary scene. His poems delve into themes that resonate with millions yet have often been overlooked in English-language publications. A gifted linguist, Wael masterfully blends multilingual elements into his verses, creating a rich and layered poetic experience. His Mashriqi poetry, rooted in a deep understanding of various Islamic and Eastern languages and cultures, is a much-needed addition to today's poetic landscape. This collection not only showcases his talent but also broadens the scope of representation in modern poetry." -Hammad Rind, author of Four Dervishes"A Breeze from the East is a remarkable collection of poems that captures the essence of human experience with depth and grace... Whether you are a seasoned lover of poetry or new to the genre, this collection is a journey worth taking-one that lingers long after the final page." -Laureta Rexha, author of When My Absence Becomes a Moon
