Japan's worst nuclear radiation accident took place at a uranium reprocessing facility in Tokaimura, northeast of Tokyo, on 30 September 1999. The direct cause of the accident was cited as the depositing of a uranyl nitrate solution--containing about 16.6 kg of uranium, which exceeded the critical mass--into a precipitation tank. Three workers were exposed to extreme doses of radiation. Hiroshi Ouchi, one of these workers, was transferred to the University of Tokyo Hospital Emergency Room, three days after the accident. Dr. Maekawa and his staff initially thought that Ouchi looked relatively well for a person exposed to such radiation levels. He could talk, and only his right hand was a little swollen with redness. However, his condition gradually weakened as the radioactivity broke down the chromosomes in his cells. The doctors were at a loss as to what to do. There were very few precedents and proven medical treatments for the victims of radiation poisoning. Less than 20 nuclear accidents had occurred in the world to that point, and most of those happened 30 years ago. This book documents the following 83 days of treatment until his passing, with detailed descriptions and explanations of the radiation poisoning.

Human find symmetrical face more attractive than are asymmetrical faces. Perfectly bilateral face and body symmetry is largely a theoretical concept that seldom exists in living organisms. Right-left differences occur everywhere in nature where two bilateral congruent parts present in an entity. The smile is one of the most important facial expressions and is essential in expressing friendliness, agreement, and appreciation. A smile when pleasing and attractive to observers enriches not only the one who smiles, but those who view it. This book highlights the methods to assess facial symmetry, smile and facial aesthetics in different facial growth patterns and correlates them with underlying hard tissue structure. Thus it evaluates facial symmetry and smile in relation to attractiveness in different facial growth patterns.

An exploration of how a supposedly apolitical form of philosophy owes its continuing power to social and political forcesAnalytic philosophy is the dominant form of philosophy in the English-speaking world, and beyond, today. What explains its continuing success? Christoph Schuringa argues that its enduring power can only be understood by examining its social history.Analytic philosophy tends to think of itself as concerned with eternal questions, raised above the changing scenes of history. It thinks of itself as apolitical, and unaffected by political and social forces. This book, however, powerfully shows that the opposite is true. The origins of analytic philosophy are in a set of distinct movements, chief among them the Cambridge philosophy of Bertrand Russell and G.E. Moore, and logical positivism of the Vienna Circle, shaped by highly specific, and different, sets of political and social forces. Only after World War II were these disparate, often dynamic movements joined together to make ‘analytic philosophy’ as we know it.In the climate of McCarthyism, what now established a hegemonic hold on the world of philosophy, under the aegis of European émigrés such as Rudolf Carnap and American philosophers such as W.V. Quine, was robbed of political force. To this day, analytic philosophy is the ideology of the status quo. It may seem arcane and largely removed from the real world, but analytic philosophy is a crucial component in upholding liberalism, through its central role in elite educational institutions and its reinforcement of other parts of the intellectual culture such as neoclassical economics. As Schuringa concludes by arguing, the apparent increasing friendliness of analytic philosophers to rival approaches in philosophy should be understood as a form of colonization; thanks to its hegemonic status, it reformats all it touches in the service of its own imperatives, going so far as even to colonize decolonial efforts in the discipline.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Sociology - Relationships and Family, grade: 1,9, University of Manchester, course: Homosexuality in Jordan, language: English, abstract: This paper will give a general socio-political analysis of homosexuality in Jordan in order to raise awareness of the universal need for LGBT rights. It will be examined how, despite the attempt of Professor Joseph Massad to claim otherwise, there are indeed homosexuals in Jordan and they are oppressed. It will be shown that despite Jordan being the most gay-friendly country in the Middle East, and the only Arab country where homosexuality is technically legal, the situation is less than ideal. Honour killings are still common and only lightly prosecuted, police crackdowns are common, and the pressure from family and society is massive. The coverage of homosexuality in the Jordanian press is almost entirely negative, associating homosexuality with moral decay and perversion.
