In this cleverly conceived book, physicist Robert Gilmore makes accessible some complex concepts in quantum mechanics by sending Alice to Quantumland-a whole new Wonderland, smaller than an atom, where each attraction demonstrates a different aspect of quantum theory. Alice unusual encounters, enhanced by illustrations by Gilmore himself, make the Uncertainty Principle, wave functions, the Pauli Principle, and other elusive concepts easier to grasp.

Lewis Carroll's classic tales of Alice go almost without introduction -- but many in our day and age know the story only from an infinity of TV adaptations. That's a shame, because Carroll was a delightful writer: " . . . Just then her head struck against the roof of the hall: in fact she was now more than nine feet high, and she at once took up the little golden key and hurried off to the garden door. . . . Poor Alice!" Alice may be poor, but all who read of her are wealthy in a way that's utterly uncommon.

In this sapphic homage to While You Were Sleeping, a down-on-her-luck receptionist is mistaken as the girlfriend of a comatose man and doesn’t have the heart to come clean to his devastated family—even when she starts falling for his sister.Alice Rue has never spoken to her longtime crush Nolan Altman, but when she saves his life one night in their office building, the EMTs tell his family that Alice is Nolan’s girlfriend. She wants to set the record straight, but Nolan’s in a coma, and if the family feels comforted by the idea of Nolan having his “girlfriend” by his side for what might be his last moments, isn’t it kinder to go along with it? At least for now? After all, the Altmans are impossibly nice and supportive, and there’s something about Nolan’s sister, Van, that makes Alice feel more seen and understood than she has in years. The local news names her a hero. Her boss finally starts treating her well. Alice even starts to remember what it’s like to have a family. She knows it’s wrong to lie, but it's easy to convince herself that she's doing the right thing by evading the truth. What she can’t avoid, however, is her growing chemistry with Van. Alice must decide if she can unravel this tangle of lies in order to salvage her chances with the woman who just may be the love of her life—especially if Nolan wakes up. Warm, witty, and full of heart, this debut romcom is a love story for pessimists who secretly hope for their own happily ever after.

In 1862 Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, a shy Oxford mathematician with a stammer, created a story about a little girl tumbling down a rabbit hole. Thus began the immortal adventures of Alice, perhaps the most popular heroine in English literature. Countless scholars have tried to define the charm of the Alice books-with those wonderfully eccentric characters the Queen of Hearts, Tweedledum, and Tweedledee, the Cheshire Cat, Mock Turtle, the Mad Hatter et al.-by proclaiming that they really comprise a satire on language, a political allegory, a parody of Victorian children's literature, even a reflection of contemporary ecclesiastical history. Perhaps, as Dodgson might have said, Alice is no more than a dream, a fairy tale about the trials and tribulations of growing up-or down, or all turned round-as seen through the expert eyes of a child.

Witty, whimsical, and often nonsensical, the fiction of Lewis Carroll has been popular with both children and adults for over 150 years. The newest edition to the Leatherbound Classics series from Canterbury Classics, Lewis Carroll takes readers on a trip down the rabbit hole in "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," where height is dynamic, animals talk, and the best solutions to drying off are a dry lecture on William the Conqueror and a Caucus Race in which everyone runs in circles and there is no clear winner. "Through the Looking Glass" begins the adventure anew when Alice steps through a mirror into another magical world where she can instantly be made queen if she can only get to the other side of the colossal chessboard. Fans of Carroll will also delight in the inclusion of "Alice's Adventures Underground," the original unpublished manuscript written for the three daughters of a family friend that would later be transformed into "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." Complete with the original drawings by John Tenniel, this luxurious leather-bound edition is a steal for new readers and Carroll fans alike.

Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (Lewis Carroll) was born in 1832. Already reading The Pilgrim's Progress at the age of seven, his exceptional intelligence was apparent from the outset - his Mathematics master at Rugby wrote of him, 'I have not had a more promising boy at his age' - and he went on to be awarded a double first class honours in Maths at Christ Church, Oxford. Despite going on to hold a lectureship at Christ Church for twenty-six years, however, Dodgson found it difficult to apply himself to academic work, and it is for his extraordinary literary works that he is known. His two Alice books were originally composed for the daughter of the dean of his college, Alice Liddell, and are the most famous and enduring of his works along with The Hunting of the Snark, a book of nonsense verse. He also wrote works on logic and satirical pamphlets on Oxford politics, and became a pioneering amateur portrait photographer, specializing in Victorian celebrities and children. He died in 1898, at the age of sixty-five.

Young and imaginative Alice follows a hasty rabbit underground and comes face-to-face with some of the strangest adventures and most fantastic characters in all literature. The mad Hatter, the diabolical Queen of Hearts, the grinning Cheshire-Cat, Tweedledum, and Tweedledee could only have come from that master of sublime nonsense Lewis Carroll. In this brilliant satire of rigid Victorian society, Carroll also illuminates the fears, anxieties, and complexities of growing up. He was one of the few adult writers to enter successfully the children's world of make-believe, where the impossible becomes possible, the unreal, real, and where the heights of adventure are limited only by the depths of imagination. The International Phonetic Alphabet is a system of phonetic notation based primarily on the Latin alphabet. It was devised by the International Phonetic Association as a standardized representation of the sounds of spoken language. The IPA is used by lexicographers, foreign language students and teachers, linguists, speech-language pathologists, singers, actors, constructed language creators, and translators. This edition of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" is written entirely in that same alphabet, with fonts specially designed by Michael Everson. The transcription reflects the standard, regionally-neutral form of spoken British English known as "Received Pronunciation". Granted that most linguists agree that not much more than 4% of the population of Britain speak it today, RP was nevertheless traditionally based on educated speech in southern England; it is still widely taught and dictionaries for native speakers and learners of English still make use of it in their transcriptions. Because this is a novel, and meant to be read, it was decided to retain some orthographic features which are not normally kept in phonetic transcription: punctuation, italicization, and capitalization. Carroll's punctuation has been retained with the exception of the apostrophe marking the genitive (because "Duchess's voice" just looked wrong as "¿D¿t¿¿s'¿z v¿¿s"). ---- Ði¿ ¿¿nt¿¿næ¿¿nl F¿¿¿net¿k ¿Ælf¿b¿t ¿z ¿ ¿s¿st¿m ¿v f¿¿¿net¿k n¿¿¿te¿¿¿n be¿st ¿präm¿r¿l¿ ¿n ð¿ ¿Læt¿n ¿ælf¿b¿t. ¿t w¿z d¿¿väzd bä ði¿ ¿¿nt¿¿næ¿¿nl F¿¿¿net¿k ¿¿s¿¿s¿¿e¿¿¿n æz ¿ ¿stænd¿däzd ¿repr¿zen¿te¿¿¿n ¿v ð¿ sändz ¿v ¿sp¿¿k¿n ¿læ¿¿w¿d¿. п ¿A¿ ¿Pi¿ ¿E¿ ¿z jüzd bä ¿leks¿¿k¿¿r¿f¿z, ¿f¿r¿n ¿læ¿¿w¿d¿ ¿stjüd¿nts, ¿nd ¿ti¿t¿¿z, ¿l¿¿¿w¿sts, spi¿t¿ ¿n ¿læ¿¿w¿d¿ p¿¿¿¿l¿d¿¿sts, ¿s¿¿¿z, ¿ækt¿z, k¿n¿str¿kt¿d ¿læ¿¿w¿d¿ kri¿¿e¿t¿z, ¿nd træns¿le¿t¿z. пs ¿¿d¿¿¿n ¿v "¿Æl¿s¿z ¿d¿vent¿¿z ¿n ¿W¿nd¿¿lænd" pr¿¿zents ð¿ tekst ¿n ¿n ¿¿nt¿¿næ¿¿nl F¿¿¿net¿k ¿Ælf¿b¿t træns¿kr¿p¿¿n. п træns¿kr¿p¿¿n r¿¿flekts ð¿ ¿stænd¿d ¿ri¿d¿¿nli ¿njütr¿l f¿¿m ¿v ¿sp¿¿k¿n ¿Br¿t¿¿ ¿¿¿¿l¿¿ n¿¿n æz "R¿¿si¿vd Pr¿¿n¿ns¿¿e¿¿¿n". ¿r¿¿nt¿d ðæt m¿¿st ¿l¿¿¿w¿sts ¿¿¿ri¿ ðæt n¿t m¿t¿ m¿¿ ðæn 4% ¿v ð¿ ¿p¿pj¿¿le¿¿¿n ¿v ¿Br¿t¿n spi¿k ¿t t¿¿de¿, ¿¿¿ ¿Pi¿ w¿z ¿nev¿ð¿¿les tr¿¿d¿¿n¿l¿ be¿st ¿n ¿edjüke¿t¿d spi¿t¿ ¿n ¿s¿ð¿n ¿¿¿¿l¿nd; ¿t ¿z st¿l ¿wädli t¿¿t ¿nd ¿d¿k¿¿nr¿z f¿ ¿ne¿t¿v ¿spi¿k¿z ¿nd ¿l¿¿n¿z ¿v ¿¿¿¿l¿¿ st¿l me¿k jüs ¿v ¿t ¿n ðe¿ træns¿kr¿p¿¿nz. The early writings of renowned poet and critical theorist Jackie Wang, drawn from her early zines, indie-lit crit, and prolific early 2000s blog.Compiled as a field guide, travelogue, essay collection, and weather report, Alien Daughters Walk into the Sun traces Jackie Wang’s trajectory from hard femme to Harvard, from dumpster dives and highway bike rides to dropping out of an MFA program, becoming a National Book Award finalist, and writing her trenchant book Carceral Capitalism. Alien Daughters charts the dream-seeking misadventures of an “odd girl” from Florida who emerged from punk houses and early Tumblr to become the powerful writer she is today. Anarchic and beautifully personal, Alien Daughters is a strange intellectual autobiography that demonstrates Wang’s singular self-education: an early life lived where every day and every written word began like the Tarot’s Fool, with a leap of faith.
