These lrish tales all are reprinted from nineteenth-century sources, but they date back to a centuries-old oral tradition of storytelling that had yet to be committed to the printed page. They were passed down through the ages virtually unaltered and feature a wide variety of fantastic beings. This edition has an exquisitely designed bonded-leather binding, with distinctive gilt edging and a silk-ribbon bookmark.

One of the most significant works of Western philosophy, Hume's Treatise was published in 1739-40, before he was thirty years old. A pinnacle of English empiricism, it is a comprehensive attempt to apply scientific methods of observation to a study of human nature, and a vigorous attack upon the principles of traditional metaphysical thought. With masterly eloquence, Hume denies the immortality of the soul and the reality of space; considers the manner in which we form concepts of identity, cause and effect; and speculates upon the nature of freedom, virtue and emotion. Opposed both to metaphysics and to rationalism, Hume's philosophy of informed scepticism sees man not as a religious creation, nor as a machine, but as a creature dominated by sentiment, passion and appetite. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

2011 Reprint of 1930 Two Volume American Edition. Complete. Two volumes bound into one. Volume One: "The Pure Theory of Money". Volume Two: "The Applied Theory of Money". Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Volumes One and Two of Keynes' classic work published in a handy one volume format. Exact facsimile of the original Edition. Keynes had begun a theoretical work to examine the relationship between unemployment, money and prices back in the 1920s. The work was originally published in 1930 in two volumes. We reproduce this two volume edition in one volume. A central idea of the work was that if the amount of money being saved exceeds the amount being invested - which can happen if interest rates are too high - then unemployment will rise. This is in part a result of people not wanting to spend too high a proportion of what employers pay out, making it difficult, in aggregate, for employers to make a profit.

Our hero and narrator is the aging caretaker of cottages at a summer resort. A mysterious visitor inspires him to share the story of his long life: we witness a happy childhood cut short by the war, his hiding from the Nazis buried in a heap of potatoes, his plodding attempts to play the saxophone, the brutal murder of his family, loves lost but remembered, and footloose travels abroad. Told in the manner of friends and neighbors swapping stories over the mundane task of shelling beans-in the grand oral tradition of Mysliwski's celebrated Stone Upon Stone-each anecdote, lived experience, and memory accrues cross-stitched layers of meaning. By turns hilarious and poignant, A Treatise on Shelling Beans is an epic recounting of a life that, while universal, is anything but ordinary.

In the next place, if the things which are not seen are formed from invisible seeds, it follows that those which are seen are from visible seeds. Why, then, does no one see them? But whether any one regards the invisible parts which are in man, or the parts which can be touched, and which are visible, who does not see that both parts exist in accordance with design? (8) How, then, can bodies which meet together without design effect anything reasonable? (9) For we see that there is nothing in the whole world which has not in itself very great and wonderful design.

2013 Reprint of 1950 Third Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Volume One Only. The books of Alice A. Bailey, written in cooperation with a Tibetan teacher between 1919 and 1949, constitute a continuation of the Ageless Wisdom--a body of esoteric teaching handed down from ancient times in a form which is always suitable to each period. Intended to precede and condition the coming era, the Alice A. Bailey writings offer an unparalleled spiritual approach to such subjects as the teaching on Shamballa and the Path of spiritual evolution; the spiritual Hierarchy; the new discipleship and training in meditation as a form of service; the teaching on the seven rays and the new psychology of the soul; the teaching on esoteric astrology; and the new world religion, which emphasizes the common thread of truth linking all the major world faiths. Five volumes have been written under the overall title of "A Treatise on the Seven Rays". This sequence of books is based on the fact, the nature and the quality of the seven basic streams of energy pervading our solar system, our planet and all that lives and moves within its orbit. Of the specialized subjects presented in these books, two volumes are concerned with esoteric psychology - the first in relation to basic energy patterns and structures; the second particularly applied to the soul and the personality of man and to the working out of the Plan for humanity. Psychology is defined in Webster's Dictionary as "the science of mind", at one time considered a branch of metaphysics. Today we are more inclined to include all the conditioning subjective factors as psychological in nature - mental and emotional impulses and soul contact, to whatever degree it exists. These subjective influences constitute the whole psychological background to a man's attitudes and behaviour, and create the faculty of spiritual response. The "psyche" is, after all, the human soul, the centre of consciousness. Esoteric psychology begins with a consideration of the human being as a soul, manifesting in the form of a personality, consisting of mental, emotional and etheric/physical substance, and more or less in contact and control, depending on the stage of evolution in the personality consciousness. From the point of view of esoteric psychology, evolution is the evolution of consciousness, by which the imbedded fragment of the soul within the personality progressively identifies its spiritual source and becomes at-one with it. The seven differentiated streams of ray energy play a significant role in this evolutionary process. A blend of five energies in a human being determine his goals, his problems, his available qualities and energy resources, and the correct method by which - according to his dominant ray influence - he may unfold his consciousness and make spiritual progress. In this volume of Esoteric Psychology many of these distinctive ray qualities and methods are given as quotations, or interpretations, of "The Old Commentary" put into poetic and symbolic words. The seven rays are shown as the Seven Creative Builders, each one imbued with purpose and power, functioning together as a synthesis in occult obedience to the purposes of our Solar Logos. Such a detailed and comprehensive study of the ray energies influencing our planetary life and all kingdoms in nature is of inestimable value to the aspirant consciously preparing himself to become of planetary service as he learns to serve and to unite with his fellowmen.

This TIP is organized into three parts: ¿ Part 1 for behavioral health practitioners focuses on providing appropriate counseling methods and frameworks. ¿ Part 2 for program administrators focuses on providing administrative support to implement adoption of the counseling recommendations made in Part 1. ¿ Part 3 for clinical supervisors, program administrators, and interested practitioners is an online literature review that provides an in-depth look at relevant published resources. Part 3 will be updated regularly following publication of the TIP. Ideally, it is envisioned that a supervisor might assemble a small group of counselors, distribute copies of this TIP (which are free), and begin a series of six or so meetings where the materials in the TIP would be reviewed, discussed, and in other ways used as an educational and training vehicle for the improvement of treatment skills.

A PBS Great American Read Top 100 PickA special 75th anniversary edition of the beloved American classic about a young girl's coming-of-age at the turn of the twentieth century. From the moment she entered the world, Francie Nolan needed to be made of stern stuff, for growing up in the Williamsburg slums of Brooklyn, New York demanded fortitude, precocity, and strength of spirit. Often scorned by neighbors for her family's erratic and eccentric behavior-such as her father Johnny's taste for alcohol and Aunt Sissy's habit of marrying serially without the formality of divorce-no one, least of all Francie, could say that the Nolans' life lacked drama. By turns overwhelming, heartbreaking, and uplifting, the Nolans' daily experiences are raw with honestly and tenderly threaded with family connectedness. Betty Smith has, in the pages of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, captured the joys of humble Williamsburg life-from "junk day" on Saturdays, when the children traded their weekly take for pennies, to the special excitement of holidays, bringing cause for celebration and revelry. Smith has created a work of literary art that brilliantly captures a unique time and place as well as deeply resonant moments of universal experience. Here is an American classic that "cuts right to the heart of life," hails the New York Times. "If you miss A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, you will deny yourself a rich experience."
Artistic practices that share intimate, speculative and queer observations of tree kinshipPlants make the world; they literally create soil, shape landscapes and regulate the climate to some extent. They provide oxygen, fuel, food, building materials and shelter. Is anthropomorphism a way to strengthen the connection between humans and trees or a danger that makes it impossible to acquire objective knowledge? A Tree: A Reader on Arboreal Kinship showcases research and works in which artists explore the relationship between people and trees and ways we can relate more closely to their time span. (Some species, such as pines and Japanese cypress trees, can live up to 5,000 years.) A Tree is about vegetal agency, plant knowledge and the interaction between plants and people. The aim of this reader is to nurture and encourage dialogues and to share inspiration on exercising arboreal kinship by taking the time to think about trees differently.
'Rather splendid' - FINANCIAL TIMES'Admirably ingenious' - THE TIMES'A delicious mystery' - DAILY MAILA trial is rather like a play. We wear our costumes. We perform to the audience. And on a good day no-one gets murdered. Six nights a week the cast of the smash-hit play Daughter of the Revolution performs to a sold-out audience. A thrilling story of forbidden marriage and a secret love child, the critics say it'll run for years. That is until one night the third act ends not in applause but in death, when leading lady Alexandra Dyce is beheaded live on stage. Every cast member has a motive, but it is the dead woman's co-star - and ex-husband - Hollywood legend Leo Lusk who is charged with the crime. When defence barrister Charles Konig is brought in last minute, he knows this ought to be the case of a lifetime. But Charles would rather be on his holiday trekking up K2, and he isn't interested in celebrities, especially ones that seem to be mysteriously trying to derail their own defence. But as he and his co-counsel New York lawyer Yara Ortiz sift through the evidence, it becomes clear that clues may lie in the play itself. And that Charles's only chance of victory is to identify the real murderer... A delightfully clever legal mystery with as many layers as an onion. Perfect for readers of Janice Hallett, Tom Hindle, Rob Rinder and Richard Osman.

'This book will profoundly change the way you consider your own mind' Lewis Dartnell, bestselling author of The Knowledge, Origins and Being Human'You will not a find a more up-to-date or more compelling account of how a mind emerges from the brain' Chris Frith, Emeritus Professor of Neuropsychology at University College London'An engaging, informative, and genuinely entertaining guide to the many weird ways in which our brains create the world we live in' Dean Burnett, author of The Idiot BrainHow does your brain decide what it's seeing, from the physical world to other people? For decades, scientists have tried to understand how our brains work, not realising that the answer lies much closer to home than it seems. The latest research in neuroscience and psychology suggests that the brain is doing the same thing that the scientists are: using past experiences to build theories of how the world works, and using these models to predict and make sense of it. Through this process, your brain constructs the reality that you live in. In this book Daniel Yon takes the research one step further, uncovering how your brain colours your perception of the world, the judgements you make about other people and the beliefs you form about yourself. With transformative applications for how we engage with other communities and approach mental illness, A Trick of The Mind will revolutionise the way you think.
**A Book of the Year in The Times and The Sunday Times **Trees are essential, for nature and for us. Yet we are cutting and burning them at such a rate that we are fast approaching a tipping point. But there is still hope. If we had a trillion more trees, the damage could be undone. Combining cutting-edge scientific research with vivid travel writing, Fred Pearce shows how we achieve this. Challenging received wisdom about the need for planting, he explains why the best strategy is to stand back, stop the destruction and let nature - and those who dwell in the forests - do the rest.Lucid, revelatory and often surprising, A Trillion Trees is an environmental call to arms, and a celebration of our planet's vast arboreal riches.

Examination Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Würzburg, course: Englische Literaturwissenschaft, language: English, abstract: ¿There was an awful rainbow once in heaven:/ We know her woof, her texture; she is given/ In the dull catalogue of common things./ Philosophy will clip an Angel¿s wings,/ Conquer all mysteries by rule and line,/ Empty the haunted air, and gnomed mine ¿/ Unweave a rainbow¿ (Keats 320f). In December 1917, Keats attended Benjamin Haydon¿s ¿immortal dinner¿ during which Charles Lamb accused Haydon of including Newton¿s head in his painting ¿Christ¿s Entry in Jerusalem¿ (cf. Dawkins 38f). This painting was, according to Lamb, an affront since Isaac Newton ¿had destroyed all the poetry of the rainbow by reducing it to the prismatic colours¿ (Dawkins 39). Keats agreed with Lamb that a man like Newton would ¿reduc[e] life to physical organization¿ (Gigante 442) and therefore bereave the world of its wonders. In 1919, Keats began writing Lamia in which he took up the subject of the difficult relationship between science and literature. The initial quotation promotes the assumption that in Lamia, science is seen as something that strips poetry (and the arts in general) of its ¿beauty and mystery¿ (Abrams 307). By ¿unweav[ing] the rainbow¿ (Keats/Cook 321) Sir Isaac Newton had presumably destroyed the mysterious nature of the rainbow by means of rationalism as one then knows about its ¿woof, [its] texture¿ (Keats 320). However, one can find ambiguous details in Lamia that put Keats¿ position in question. Under Apollonius¿ eyes (Apollonius stands for reason and the urge to define everything (Sandy 53)) Lamiäs beauty vanishes and she becomes a serpent again. It could be argued that Apollonius saved Lycius (who is seen as a dreamer and a fantasist) from the sinful and evil snake, rather than depriving him of his lover. Although it might at first seem obvious that Keats is clearly emphatically siding against the scientific position, against reason, this view turns out to be reductive (cf. Midgley 55). Hence, even in Keats¿ poetry, which primarily demonizes science and the scientific progress, hints can be found that science is not that devilish after all. The hypothesis that Keats¿ view on science was not as exclusively negative as most commonly assumed is further supported by the fact that Keats had studied at Guy¿s Hospital and was licensed to work as an apothecary (Keats/Cook xxxi). In himself, Keats internalises the difficult relationship of science and literature.[...]

The southwest coast of Africa is known to sailors as the 'Skeleton Coast', on account of the number of wrecks it has claimed over the centuries. It is not only the most dangerous coast in the world, but the most desolate - and potentially the richest.During World War II, fate had given Lieutenant-Commander Geoffrey Peace, R.N. a charted sea map to this forbidden place. And as one of Briton's best submarine captains he is tasked by the Admiralty to seek out, hunt down, and sink under conditions of absolute secrecy a new type of advanced German U-boat that could change the course of the war. Years afterward, still obsessed by his memories and the nightmares of what transpired during that mission, Peace finds himself being blackmailed and forced to go back to that hellish region by a German ex-pat to once again challenge the whirlwind sea and barren land which has kept the Skeleton Coast free from the intrusions of man.

In recent years, international nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) like Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have described U.S.-led drone strikes in Pakistan, Syria, Afghanistan, and elsewhere as atrocities and even war crimes. Both the International Committee of the Red Cross and Human Rights Watch have asked whether the United States is violating the Law of Armed Conflict (LOAC), with Human Rights Watch suggesting that the United States should be prosecuted for its actions. At the same time, the International Committee for Robot Arms Control (ICRAC) has called for greater regulation of what they term "killer robots." How might military leaders best respond to these allegations? In this insightful analysis, Dr. Mary Manjikian offers a framework for understanding the different types of anti-drone arguments made by policymakers, NGOs, academics, and other states.

The central argument of A Universe from Nothing stems from three discoveries about the nature of the universe: First, that the total energy of our universe if precisely zero, a fact that didnt have to be true, and is highly suggestive. It is hard to imagine how a universe that arose from nothing could have been any different, or why a universe that didnt should be so finely tuned. Second, quantum mechanics, when applied to the universe, requires something to come from nothing. Put more simply perhaps: nothingness is unstable. At a microscopic scale quantum mechanics implies all systems are fluctuating, exploring all possible allowed states at any instant. One with zero total energy can expand outward forever so that empty space is therefore destined to give birth to a universe that has the characteristics that ours has. Finally, physicists have recently begun to address the origin of the existence of space and the laws of physics--and how these change over time. The knowledge that our universe will be quite different in the far future has profound implications for the future of the universe and everything in it.

The astounding "New York Times" bestseller--updated with an explanation of the Higgs Boson and its implications--offers new answers to the most basic philosophical questions. With wry humor and wonderfully clear explanations, Krauss goes back to the beginning of the beginning.
Planet Earth has been a familiar concept for a mere fraction of recorded history. Until about the mid-1600s, most humans thought of Earth as immobile, likely either dim or simply invisible from the Moon or anywhere else in the heavens, and not (like the planets) participating in what Galileo called "the dance of the stars." A Universe of Earths: Our Planet and Other Worlds, from Copernicus to NASA retraces the exhilarating story of how all that changed, and how we came to perceive the Earth as a "wandering star." It's a story that has vastly augmented and enriched our understanding of how Earth and its inhabitants fit into the big picture of the Cosmos. But almost as soon as humans started to grasp that Earth is a planet, many also began wondering if perhaps the other planets might be earths. This bold conjecture ignited the whole gripping history and literature of space travel, of extraterrestrials, of other worlds. And yet the thesis that the Universe is full of other worlds like Earth has from the start been fuelled more by imagination than by scientific evidence. For all its appeal, it has consistently been undermined by observations of the actual Universe. A Universe of Earths offers a surprising alternative to that "other worlds" account, one that releases humans not only from the pre-Copernican view of Earth as low, lowly, dark, a cosmic sump, but also from the persistent modern aspersion of Earth as cosmically ordinary, "mediocre," "dethroned." Instead, from Copernicus to the present, we are confronted with the bracing realization that Earth is in the classical sense a star, a dynamically wandering one, and a bright, maybe even peerless participant in the dance of the stars.

A User's Guide to Capitalism and Schizophrenia is a playful and emphatically practical elaboration of the major collaborative work of the French philosophers Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari. When read along with its rigorous textual notes, the book also becomes the richest scholarly treatment of Deleuze's entire philosophical oeuvre available in any language. Finally, the dozens of explicit examples that Brian Massumi furnishes from contemporary artistic, scientific, and popular urban culture make the book an important, perhaps even central text within current debates on postmodern culture and politics.Capitalism and Schizophrenia is the general title for two books published a decade apart. The first, Anti-Oedipus, was a reaction to the events of May/June 1968; it is a critique of "state-happy" Marxism and "school-building" strains of psychoanalysis. The second, A Thousand Plateaus, is an attempt at a positive statement of the sort of nomad philosophy Deleuze and Guattari propose as an alternative to state philosophy.

A glorious fusion of history and art, A Vast Horizon tells the story of Pablo Picasso and his free-spirited friends, including Lee Miller and Man Ray, in the tumultuous years around the Second World War.
The science behind global warming, and its history: how scientists learned to understand the atmosphere, to measure it, to trace its past, and to model its future.Global warming skeptics often fall back on the argument that the scientific case for global warming is all model predictions, nothing but simulation; they warn us that we need to wait for real data, "sound science.” In A Vast Machine Paul Edwards has news for these skeptics: without models, there are no data. Today, no collection of signals or observations—even from satellites, which can "see” the whole planet with a single instrument—becomes global in time and space without passing through a series of data models. Everything we know about the world's climate we know through models. Edwards offers an engaging and innovative history of how scientists learned to understand the atmosphere—to measure it, trace its past, and model its future.
