With an introduction by Olivia Laing Monday 20 April 1925. One thing in considering my state of mind now, seems to me beyond dispute, that I have at last, bored down into my oil well, & can't scribble fast enough to bring it all to the surface... I have never felt this rush & urgency before. Mrs Dalloway (1925), To the Lighthouse (1927), Orlando (1928), A Room of One's Own (1929) - the years covered by this volume of Virginia Woolf's diary saw the publication of four of her most celebrated works, and the writing of The Waves. Her diary captures the accelerating pace of her life, and the creative friendships with other well-known writers and artists. At times exhilarated, at others fearful or depressed, the entries of these years are animated by Woolf's sheer vitality as a writer.

Autorid: Virginia Woolf
German-english edition The epochal term "New Objectivity" became synonymous with the cultural awakening of the 1920s, and with the rationalism and objective precision to be observed in art as well as architecture, design, photography and literature at that time. In 1925, Gustav F. Hartlaub coined the term with an exhibition of the same name. 100 years later, the exhibition shown then at Kunsthalle Mannheim will be scrutinized critically and reconstructed digitally. In addition to works by key artistic figures such as Max Beckmann, Otto Dix and George Grosz, the new exhibition will also present overlooked positions, especially those of female artists such as Anita Rée and Lotte Laserstein. The scope will also be extended topographically, e.g. to Switzerland and Italy, as well as chronologically, to the 1930s and early 1940s. The publication promises visual immersion in a formative stylistic epoch and will provide insights into the current state of research on key questions of New Objectivity. Look inside New Objectivity - a panorama of the 1920s and 1930s An era rediscovered: female positions and forgotten artists, highlighting people, motifs and themes Exhibition: Kunsthalle Mannheim, 22.11.2024 - 9.3.2025

"A Dog's Heart: An Appalling Story" is Mikhail Bulgakov's hilarious satire on Communist hypocrisies. This "Penguin Classics" edition is translated with notes by Andrew Bromfield, and includes an introduction by James Meek. In this surreal work by the author of "The Master and Margarita", wealthy Moscow surgeon Filip Preobrazhensky implants the pituitary gland and testicles of a drunken petty criminal into the body of a stray dog named Sharik. As the dog slowly transforms into a man, and the man into a slovenly, lecherous government official, the doctor's life descends into chaos. A scathing indictment of the New Soviet Man, "A Dog's Heart" was immediately banned by the Soviet government when it was first published in 1925: alternating lucid realism with pulse-raising drama, the novel captures perfectly the atmosphere of its rapidly changing times. Andrew Bromfield's vibrant translation is accompanied by an introduction by James Meek, which places the work in the context of the Russian class struggles of the era and considers the vision, progressive style and lasting relevance of an author who was isolated and suppressed during his lifetime. This edition also contains notes and a chronology. Mikhail Bulgakov (1891-1940) was born in Kiev, today the capital of Ukraine. After finishing high school, Bulgakov entered the Medical School of Kiev University, graduating in 1916. He wrote about his experiences as a doctor in his early works "Notes on Cuffs" and "Notes of a Young Country Doctor". His later works treated the subject of the artist and the tyrant under the guise of historical characters, but "The Master and Margarita" is generally considered his masterpiece. Fame, at home and abroad, was not to come until a quarter of a century after his death at Moscow in 1940. If you enjoyed "A Dog's Heart", you might like Bulgakov's "The Master and Margarita", also available in "Penguin Classics". "One of the greatest of modern Russian writers, perhaps the greatest". (Nigel Jones, "Independent").

Artist and author Edward Gorey (American, 1925-2000) is beloved for the boundless imagination and sharp humor exhibited in his more than 100 published works. Gorey was also a set and costume designer for innumerable theater productions, including a staging of Bram Stoker's Dracula, for which he won a Tony. He had a profound affection for literature, film, ballet, and animals. Cats and other odd creatures appear in many of his crosshatched illustrations. His humorously unsettling drawings of vaguely Victorian innocents facing unfortunate ends became familiar to a wide audience after appearing in the opening credits of the PBS television series Mystery! Gorey's Cape Cod home, a veritable cabinet of curiosities, is now a museum celebrating his life and work.
