Dans un contexte, où les notions de féminisme et d’égalité sont vidées de leur sens hier radical, que peut signifier être féministe aujourd’hui? Quels sont les combats à mener? Comment mettre au cœur des luttes des femmes l’antiracisme, l’anticapitalisme et l’anti-impérialisme?Françoise Vergès s’attache d’abord à interroger les deux récits médiatiques qui dominent l’histoire du mouvement des femmes des années 1970 en France, l’un qui parle d’un mouvement qui aurait mené à une reconnaissance de la place des femmes françaises dans la république avec ses valeurs de laïcité et d’égalité, l’autre qui dénonce un mouvement qui aurait été exclusivement « blanc » et essentiellement intéressé par la liberté sexuelle. Reconnaissant une profonde asymétrie entre ces deux récits, Françoise Vergès questionne cependant les causes de l’effacement de féminismes radicaux et anticoloniaux, antiracistes et anti-impérialistes des années 1970. Il faut en effet analyser comment le féminisme étatique contribua à la pacification du mouvement radical en faisant des discriminations et de la loi l’objectif des luttes; comment il transforma le contrôle des naissances dans le Sud global ou auprès des femmes pauvres et immigrées et l’intégration des femmes racisées dans le monde du travail globalisé en politiques de la sororité. Il a su faire de l’intégration des femmes dans le monde du travail et dans celui de l’éducation la mesure du progrès des gouvernements et des institutions internationales. Le féminisme carcéro-punitif a pris peu à peu une place majeure, donnant au tribunal et à la police le rôle de protéger les femmes des discriminations et des abus, ignorant l’analyse sociale et politique. Violences domestiques et sexuelles sont devenus le fait d’individus isolés, enfermés dans une pathologie de masculinités arriérées et n’ont plus été analysées comme faits sociaux. En faisant disparaître le radicalisme des mouvements de femmes des années 1970 qui furent portés par l’énergie des grandes luttes anti-impérialistes et antiracistes pour passer à un féminisme de la pacification, c’est le désir de faire éclater les structures qui est effacé. Dans un deuxième temps, à travers une lecture critique de la métaphore de "vagues", l’auteure propose une temporalité et une spatialité des luttes des femmes pour la justice et la liberté, contre le racisme et pour l’égalité qui excède celles du cadre national. En partant des luttes des femmes esclavagisées et colonisées, puis des luttes des femmes des sociétés postcoloniales françaises, elle montre l’internationalisme des luttes. Puis, partant des grèves de ces dernières années de femmes ouvrières racisées qui font le ménage dans les hôtels ou nettoient les gares, Françoise Vergès revient sur les analyses féministes autour de la question du travail dit « féminin » – le travail de soin et de nettoyage. Elle propose de mettre au cœur d’un féminisme politique et révolutionnaire ce travail dans ses dimensions de classe et de race.Enfin, Françoise Vergès fait une analyse critique des politiques gouvernementales actuelles – la parité et l’inégalité – et, s’appuyant sur les nombreux exemples d’offensive féministe à travers le monde, elle suggère des pistes d’action et des axes de recherche pour renforcer un féminisme politique et révolutionnaire.
