Open any book on strange or abandoned aircraft projects, and you will probably find the Bristol Brabazon featured. Over the years, this huge piston-engine powered, propeller-driven airliner, designed for the vital trans-Atlantic routes, has been referred to as the white elephant of the skies, or even one of the worlds worst aircraft. But, as the author reveals, such sentiments may well be undeserved. With a wingspan and size larger than the jumbo jets we are familiar with today, the Brabazon was designed to fly just sixty or so passengers in supreme luxury from London to New York. During their flight, these lucky individuals could while away the hours at the cocktail bar, enjoy the onboard movie theatre, or have a rest in the fully furnished sleeping compartments. Born during the Second World War, the Brabazon first flew in 1949. Maybe, the author asks, it was just ahead of its time. The twin-deck design, for example, is mirrored today in the Airbus A380 airliner, and several of the worlds airlines have begun to express interest in using large aircraft configured to provide comfort and style for a limited number of passengers who would pay for such as experience. This book is more than just a technical review. Using a combination of existing documentation, archive material and original research, the author sets out to place the whole story of the Brabazon firmly in its cultural social and political context. How and why was this giant aircraft conceived? What led to it being cancelled in 1952, and the one flying prototype being sold for scrap after millions had been invested in its design, construction and marketing. Who were the people behind the revolutionary technical advances made during its creation? Why was a whole village demolished to accommodate this giant of the skies, and how did that lead to the eventual development of the Concorde SST? Whether you are an aviation enthusiast, interested in engineering history, political sciences or just the history of aviation industry, this study of the Brabazon will help you decide whether it was an engineering masterpiece or a great white elephant.

Autorid: Alan J Porter
Some airlines carry passengers. Others become part of the way a nation presents itself to the world. For generations, the blue-and-yellow crane has crossed political change, technological revolutions, economic crises, new aircraft, new routes, and changing expectations of what international air travel should be.Lufthansa: Aircraft, Routes, Liveries, and the Story of Germany's Flag Carrier takes readers inside one of Europe's most influential airline histories, following the name from its complex interwar origins through postwar reconstruction, the jet age, global expansion, alliance building, fleet transformation, crisis, and renewal.Todd Berkeley combines the aircraft enthusiasts remember with the decisions and circumstances that explain why those aircraft mattered. Boeing 707s, 737s, 747s, Airbus wide-bodies, the A380 and 747-8 appear within the larger story of routes, economics, airports, passenger expectations, competition, politics, branding, and Lufthansa's changing place in European aviation.Along the way, readers will discover:How Lufthansa was rebuilt after the Second World War, why the modern company is legally distinct from its prewar namesake, and how the historic crane survived the break. Why major fleet decisions changed far more than the aircraft on the ramp, from Lufthansa's role as Boeing 737 launch customer to its long relationship with the 747 and Airbus. How routes, hubs, cabin products, liveries, Miles & More, Star Alliance, SWISS, Austrian and Eurowings helped transform Lufthansa from a German flag carrier into the center of a much larger European airline group. The less familiar stories behind the familiar brand-the Airport Express trains, design decisions, financial crises, security challenges, competitive pressures, ambitious fleet bets, and strategic choices that shaped the airline passengers know today.Carefully researched and written for aviation enthusiasts who value history, context, aircraft, people and commercial strategy, this volume turns a century of Lufthansa into a connected story rather than a sequence of dates and specifications.By the final page, the reader will understand not only what Lufthansa flew and where it flew, but how an airline repeatedly adapted to a changing Germany, a changing Europe, and a changing aviation industry-and why the crane became one of the most recognizable symbols in international air travel.
