Wildside Press Cyborg and the Sorcerers/The Wizard and the War Machine (Wildside Double #5) In the tradition of the old "Ace Doubles" two-in-one books (flip one over to read the second title) -- here is the fifth Wildside Double: the two-volume "War Surplus" series by Lawrence Watt-Evans, "The Cyborg and the Sorcerers" and "The Wizard and the War Machine."THE CYBORG AND THE SORCERERSThe cyborg code-named "Slant" was sent out as an Independent Reconnaissance Unit during an interstellar war between Earth and its colonies. The fighting ended three hundred years ago, but Slant's computer does not admit this -- he is compelled to carry on as if the war were still raging. Then he comes across a planet where his sensors register "gravitational anomalies." The computer interprets these as enemy weapons research. The local inhabitants call the anomalies "magic."THE WIZARD AND THE WAR MACHINEAt the end of The Cyborg and the Sorcerers, Sam Turner was making a life for himself on the planet Dest. He thought he had left the long-lost interstellar war between Earth and its rebellious colonies behind him forever."Forever" turned out to be eleven years. That was how long it took for another Independent Reconnaissance Unit to respond to the distress call his ship had sent before it was destroyed. And this one made his own berserk killer computer look sane. | 0 | Vaata
State University of New York Press Killing Children in British Fiction: Thatcherism to Brexit GTIN: 9781438499567 Raamatud Investigates how British fiction and film use dangerous and endangered children to explore conflicts over the future, from the Thatcher to Brexit eras. Co-Winner for the 2025 Monograph Prize presented by the British Association of Contemporary Literary Studies This book stems from a simple yet disturbing observation: contemporary British fiction is full of children killing or being killed. Thoughtfully considering novels and films, alongside actual murder cases and moral panics, Dominic Dean develops this insight into a complex account of British cultural history, from the Thatcher to Brexit eras. Killing Children in British Fiction argues that the figure of the child provides means for negotiating, and hence for understanding, recent crises in Britain and their intersections with broader transnational conflicts. The book explores works from major British authors such as Kazuo Ishiguro, Ian McEwan, Doris Lessing, Sarah Waters, Alan Hollinghurst, and Peter Ackroyd; emerging writers such as David Szalay and Melissa Harrison; and filmmakers, including Stanley Kubrick, Nicholas Roeg, Robin Hardy, Derek Jarman, and Remi Weekes. Bridging and often challenging existing scholarship in childhood studies, literary studies, psychoanalysis, and critical and queer theory, Dean shows how the child, at once materially present and representative of an insecure future, can provoke relentless fantasies, fears, and, most troublingly, acts of real violence by adults. Porto Press Ltd Rock Lighthouses of Britain & Ireland GTIN: 9781849955447 Raamatud Rock Lighthouses of Britain & Ireland is a new edition of the classic work on the subject but with some of the most famous Irish rock lighthouses included. The text has been updated to include the modern technology being used by the lighthouse authorities, as well as all the historical advances made over the centuries at British and Irish rock lights. This is complemented by scores of new and many stunning photographs as well as historic plans and drawings, many of them highly colourful and artistic, as used by the original lighthouse builders. At the end are comprehensive and detailed tables about all the rock lighthouses maintained by the three lighthouse authorities. Building on the acclaim received for the earlier editions, it brings the history of these iconic structures completely up-to-date, from the days before the first granite block was laid, through their construction, automation, the disappearance of the lighthouse keeper, right up to todays totally automatic operation. These are some of the worlds most famous rock lighthouses, and their stories of men battling against Natures most powerful forces to build a structure designed to save lives on a seemingly impossible site. Rock Lighthouses of Britain & Ireland spans the centuries between the worlds first rock lighthouse on the Eddystone reef, to the very last rock lighthouse constructed in the traditional style on Irelands Fastnet Rock and accordingly it will remain the premier book about rock lighthouses. Porto Press Ltd Footsteps in the Snow GTIN: 9781849955393 Raamatud Footsteps in the Snow recounts a life shaped and dominated by Antarctica, a multi-facetted account of a life dedicated to Antarctic science, policy and governance. It is also the story of growth from callow youth to Antarctic professional in the most challenging of environments. Joining the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) straight from university in 1966 meant two years as a scientist at an isolated British research station with all the challenges of wintering in the hostile environment half a century ago. After just two years he became one of the youngest men to be made a base commander, and as Sir Vivian Fuchs (then Director of BAS) recounts proved himself one of the best we ever had under the most testing conditions. The story recounts the many challenges of those testing conditions, while developing scientific ideas and accomplishing engineering feats with his team and on occasion looking death in the face and surviving. There were new developments in building research stations on the ice shelf, and the discovery of the ozone hole that gripped the world. Then followed the transition from research scientist to policy maker and diplomat when he became Deputy Director of BAS and advisor to the British delegation at the Antarctic Treaty. Tragedy struck at a base resulting in the author leading the first ever British midwinter flight into Antarctica. Since retiral, the author has become a polar historian of repute, and his efforts have been directed to writing and being a guide for Antarctic tourism. This book allows the reader to feel the wonder, awe, excitement and passion for Antarctica which drove John Dudeney throughout his career, and which is as fresh today as it was on first encounter half a century ago. Porto Press Ltd Scottish Lighthouse Pioneers: Travels with the Stevensons in Orkney and Shetland GTIN: 9781849952651 Raamatud In the 19th century, the Stevenson engineers pioneered marvellous lighthouses around the coasts of Scotland - lighthouses which inspire with their architectural elegance, and speak of compassion for sailors and fishermen risking their lives in these notoriously dangerous waters. But what was it actually like to be a Scottish lighthouse engineer, and how did the professional activities interact with social and economic conditions in Scotland at the time? How did the Northern Lighthouse Board's Engineer (almost invariably a Stevenson) cope with weeks aboard a small lighthouse vessel, travelling around the rugged Scottish coastline on dangerous tours of inspection and interacting with local people in some of the remotest regions of Europe? The author reveals the fascinating story of the Stevensons as family members as well as engineers - brilliant yet fallible, tough yet vulnerable, with private lives that are little known, even to lighthouse enthusiasts. It sets their work in a historical and social context, drawing heavily on eye-witness accounts by two of Scotland's most celebrated literary sons: Walter Scott, internationally famous poet and member of the Edinburgh establishment; and Robert Louis Stevenson, young family member and disenchanted engineering apprentice desperate to become an author. The reader is taken to the Orkney and Shetland Islands with descriptions of the chain of Stevenson lighthouses that illuminate a vital shipping route between the North Sea, Baltic, and North Atlantic. Finally we travel to Muckle Flugga, the northernmost outpost of the British Isles and last link in the chain, a vicious rock on which David and Thomas Stevenson dared to build their 'impossible lighthouse'. Porto Press Ltd A to Z of Whisky Place-Names: Landscape, Language & Invention GTIN: 9781849955034 Raamatud Have you ever wondered about the place-names that appear on Scotch whisky bottles? What language the names come from, what they mean or if they are even real places? If you feel baffled about where to start looking for such information, then this reliable and informative book is for you. Within its pages, you will be able to find out about the derivation and identity of any of these place-names. This book discusses each place-name that is concerned in some way with Scotch whisky, either as the name of the whisky itself, or as the name of the distillery. For each of these names the author provides an informative discussion of the origin, history and development of the name from a linguistic and historical perspective. He also offers an early spelling of the name, the original meaning (where known) and the correct pronunciation. Where applicable he has added curious information, such as a proverb or extract of poetry that mentions the place-name. No special linguistic or local knowledge is assumed. Additionally, there is an introduction for the educated non-specialist dealing with the various languages of Scotland: Gaelic, Scots, English, Norse and Pictish. At the end is a full list of sources used, and an appendix identifying some lost distilleries. Peppered throughout the book are information boxes about particular pertinent topics, such as Inver- and Aber- names and tautological names. As a professional place-name researcher, the author has ensured that the material in this book derives from primary sources (many of which are unpublished) and has been rigorously researched, allowing the reader to distinguish between genuine and spurious names. Interest in Scotch whisky, the Highlands, Gaelic, Scots and place-names has never been higher, and there is an increasing demand for reliable works on these subjects. This is an informative and entertaining book that sets the standard for whisky place-names. Autorid: Jacob King | 0 | Vaata
Porto Press Ltd Kayaking the Sea Roads: Exploring the Scottish Highlands GTIN: 9781849955638 Raamatud Kayaking the Sea Roads is a personal journey by sea kayak into the heart of the sea roads that make up our Scottish Highlands and islands. Blending the intensity of the journey with a careful observation of the natural world and first-hand knowledge of the challenges of living and working in this place, the author reminds us that mother nature, vast and resilient, is still out there beyond our mobile phones and urban lives. For those with the eyes to see, its natural rhythms can awaken a deep sense of wonder and give us cause to become part of the environmental recovery so sorely needed. With Ed, we travel low in the water with the restless sea ever present and we camp with him on remote rough shores. We share his feelings of wonder at the natural world, his fear at the exposure to rough seas and we encounter with him not just the myriad animals and birds that share his every day but also the people, their communities and the often gnarly rural issues impacting on human and animal alike. Alongside a deeply felt appreciation of the natural environment is a first-hand insight into the environmental and land-management issues pertinent to the Highland coast. By exploring, for instance, the impact of native versus non-native species, of community land ownership, of tourism, hunting and the varied other uses and indeed non-uses of coastal lands and seas, the readers eyes are opened to a Scottish Highlands that is so much more than just a pretty view. At the surface, this is an adventure story, but at its heart, it is a tale about belonging and a deep sense of place; and it is a journey home, home in the end to where the authors Highland love affair began. Porto Press Ltd Introduction to Nuclear Safety: Principles and Applications GTIN: 9781849955386 Raamatud This book encompasses many different topics in the field of nuclear safety and answers the need for an accessible introductory text to complement industry guidance. It focuses on the principles and applications of nuclear safety, guiding the reader through the why and the how of constructing a nuclear safety case. The theory is enhanced by the provision of examples on how safety cases may tackle a particular problem. Each nuclear site licensee has its own way of undertaking nuclear safety although there is much common ground. The book adopts a consensus approach to the various methodologies used in the industry and armed with such knowledge, an individual should have a good grounding for the application of nuclear safety in the manner required for their industry. Introduction to Nuclear Safety describes why we pursue nuclear safety, including the legal, financial and moral reasons. The fundamental concept of reducing risks to as low as reasonably practicable in the nuclear industry is discussed and the safety case life-cycle from design to commissioning to operations and decommissioning is described. Typical safety case methodologies are also discussed. In considering the applications of nuclear safety, examples of how to undertake an assessment are given. Producing a safety case is not solely a theoretical exercise; it must be implemented and adopted for use within the plant. Therefore, the book describes how safety case documents can be utilised within the plant. The book assumes only a relatively basic knowledge of physics, engineering and mathematics but the interested reader can find more detailed texts in the bibliography. Autorid: Paul F. Porto Press Ltd Life at the Edge: The Natural History of the Caithness Coast GTIN: 9781849955980 Raamatud This book is a wonderful selection of inspiring photographs reflecting life along 147 miles of fretted Caithness coastline in the far north of Scotland. Divided into five broad habitats: harbours; seas; beaches, dunes and links; sea cliffs and stacks; and rocky shorelines, each photograph is accompanied by explanatory information, opening the door into a wider world for the interested reader. From tranquil, sandy beaches to imposing sea cliffs, rocky shorelines to wild surf, the Caithness coast is a delight for those who love nature and treasure the great outdoors. The geology of the coastal cliffs, where the Old Red Sandstone bedrock has been exposed to erosion from wind and wave over millennia provides a home for the vast colonies of breeding seabirds over the summer months and the dunes and links a haven where special little plants thrive despite their exposure to the raw energy of the sea to the north and east all these factors combine to create one of the worlds great coasts. This is a coast where life is challenged by the unforgiving conditions of Scotlands northernmost county; where life is at the edge of land and sea. Harbours provide a focal point for wildlife, from the familiar sound of the herring gull perched on the harbour wall, always on the lookout for an easy meal from an unsuspecting summer tourist, to less familiar birds, such as sawbills and divers taking advantage of the calmer waters of the harbour basins during the winter. At sea, the sight of an otter feeding on a fish close to shore makes the heart sing, whilst a tall triangular fin cutting menacingly through the water, indicating the presence of an orca, makes the heart beat just that little bit faster. Waders scurry along sandy beaches feeding on the tides bounty, and in the dunes and links there is an array of charming plants blooming during the summer months, among which the Scottish primrose (Primula scotica) takes botanical pride of place; all attracting a range of pollinators. There is so much to discover and such a remarkable diversity, whether in the sea, on the beach or a rocky shoreline. Life at the Edge takes you there, and in such captivating detail through both words and images. This is a book of natural wonders to be savoured and enjoyed, time and again, enabling the reader to experience the essence of the natural history of the Caithness coast Features stunning photographs of coast, sea and wildlife by an award-winning natural history photographer. Porto Press Ltd Self Portrait: The Eyes Within New edition GTIN: 9781849955690 Raamatud This is the story of Bill Mitchell's life - his career and his body of work from hospital at an early age to a life of art with commissions offered 80 years later. It describes gaining commissions, experiments with materials and methods and his determination to produce magnificent works of art. Bill's eye for composition, colour and texture was apparent from an early age and he describes how he saw the world as being saturated in colour, textures and shape, seeing glamour and beauty in what could be dismissed as bleak London streets. After college (self-funded) and war service, he was a consultant with the London County Council and given free rein, as long as the cost was no more than the original specified treatment - which was usually a coat of paint! Bill's experimentation resulted in a vast array of new and innovative finishes which was highlighted in an exhibition by the LCC. This led to work with famous architects of the day such as Basil Spence and Sir Freddie Gibberd who designed the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King where Bill created the famous bronze sculpted doors and designed the Portland Stone frontispiece. He also produced the Stations of the Cross at Clifton Cathedral, Bristol and the Grade II listed Corn King and Spring Queen figures at Wexham, which are 'pieces of powerful and bizarre imagination'. He has had a total of nine works of art listed Grade II by English Heritage - more than any other artist. Following completion of work at Qatar's zoo, he was coerced into producing something prestigious for the Queen and Prince Philip's visit to the State. With a tight schedule, the garden at Shayhania for the Oryx with its pools, waterfalls and sculpted hills was completed in six weeks and was a massive success. He was offered the position of Adviser to the Amir's Office on Art and Design and was involved in creating interior decoration and fabulous gardens for palaces as well as massive infrastructure projects in Doha. Bill's zest for life, his love of London, his determination to cover the world with sculptures, murals and decoration are main themes, as is his dislike of minimalism and the established art world. Included are stories about his discussions on art with Princess Margaret, his clashes with Prince Philip, his battles with Mohammed Fayed and the phenomenal success of the Egyptian Hall and Escalator. He designed the Hall and executed the carving on all 300 panels cladding the walls - no mean achievement for any sculptor but Bill was by then 75 years old. He designed the notorious Michael Jackson statue, which was unveiled by Al Fayed at Fulham Football Club and which created a furore. It was shortlisted for a prestigious Public Monuments and Sculpture award in 2012 - for it to be considered alongside young modern sculptors was remarkable. Self Portrait contains a vast array of illustrations of Bill's work and in so doing reveals the man - a true creative genius, who invariably had a smile or comic story to offer, and whose energy carried projects to completion despite the many challenges. It's a brilliant and inspiring story. Autorid: William Mitchell | 0 | Vaata
Porto Press Ltd Hairy-foot, long-tongue: Solitary bees, biodiversity & evolution in your backyard GTIN: 9781849955645 Raamatud This introductory book explains bee biology and diversity complemented with beautiful drawings and photographs. It forms an essential companion to a field guide, an accessible and affordable alternative to a technical handbook. The text is presented as themed double-page spreads covering all the major topics such as diversity, taxonomy, anatomy, behaviour, pollination, evolution and adaptation and the responses of bees to climate change. Bees that you may find in your garden, allotment or park are highlighted and the book is complemented with notes, references and reading recommendations if required. The book has over 250 photographs and over 150 drawings (in colour and pencil): the majority of the photographs, and all of the drawings, are by the author. Porto Press Ltd Flight from Afghanistan: Tella's Story GTIN: 9781849954341 Raamatud In clear and utterly compelling English, this moving memoir tells the story of the agony, and the ecstasy, of one refugee and of every refugee. A must read for anyone interested in the triumph of Afghanistans spirit over its seemingly endless suffering. Sir Sherard Cowper-Coles, British Ambassador to Afghanistan, 20072010 Flight From Afghanistan is a harrowing account of what drives a man to flee his home country in fear of his life, the trauma of refugee camps and the dangers he faces even when he reaches the sanctuary of the West. Afghans are the second largest refugee group in the world. When confronted by certain death at the point of a gun, Tella Omeri, an uneducated boy from a peasant family knew he had no alternative but to put his life in the hands of ruthless human traffickers, living on his wits and instincts. His 11-year flight, which began as a six-year- old child, is a story combining brutality with courage, hopelessness with resilience. The author asks for no pity, but in his short story he seeks to explain the motivation behind his decisions and paints a radically different picture of life in a troubled region, challenging world leaders and domestic warring factions to find a solution to the endless conflict. While thousands of refugees flee conflict and danger every day, Flight from Afghanistan shines a powerful light on what it actually means to undertake such a journey, and gives a voice to the often forgotten silent victims of the long running wars in the authors home country. Afghan refugees represent one of the worlds largest protracted refugee populations. Over the past four decades, many have been forced from their homes to never see them again. Some were able to return, for a while, but had their lives upended by a fresh eruption of conflict and violence either to be displaced elsewhere in the country, or to become refugees yet again. Amnesty International Afghanistan is the worlds least peaceful country. Institute for Peace and Economics, June 2019 Tella Omeri now lives in the UK as a British Citizen with his wife and children. Porto Press Ltd Black Rood: The Lost Crown Jewel of Scotland GTIN: 9781849955317 Raamatud Black Rood tells the fascinating story of one of Scotlands oldest and most significant crown jewels. Once as famous as the Stone of Scone, the Black Rood was a gold and jewel-studded reliquary for a piece of the True Cross. This profound and holy treasure was smuggled into Scotland after the Norman invasion by the sister of the last Anglo-Saxon king of England. On her marriage to King Malcolm III, the Black Rood passed into the Scottish royal family, and so became a symbol of the authority and legitimacy of Scotlands kingship. Giving its name to the abbey and then the palace and now the parliament of Holyrood, the Black Rood was to help define Scotland as a kingdom which was at least the equal of England in the eyes of God, and in some ways superior to it. David Willem tells the story of the Black Rood though the lives of the kings and queens of Scotland and England who honoured it, treasured it, enacted themselves through it, fought over it, and who sometimes died clutching it, so creating a history in vivid human detail that ranges over a thousand years of Scottish and English history. At the same time, the author tells the story of two other similar reliquaries of the True Cross the Croes Gneth of Wales and Irelands Cross of Cong. Like the Black Rood, these Irish and Welsh crown jewels helped define the autonomy and independence of their nations, and both were to follow similar trajectories through time. The book ends with the mystery of what happened to the Black Rood, and explores the possibility that, like the Cross of Cong, it might still exist and be waiting to be found. Together these stories create a new and compelling perspective on the relationships between Scotland, England, Wales and Ireland, just when those relationships are changing again for the first time in hundreds of years. Porto Press Ltd Ploughing a New Furrow: A Blueprint for Wildlife Friendly Farming GTIN: 9781849953283 Raamatud Farmland wildlife has been decimated by intensive crop growing using pesticides, grubbing up hedges, ploughing heathland and draining marshes, etc. With too many sheep grazing our moors, hills and mountains, a range of upland plants, invertebrates and birds has been diminished and the land converted to closely-grazed turf, perfect for heavy rain to cause catastrophic downstream floods. Once common farmland birds have declined by 54% since 1970 with farmland invertebrates declining by 40% in a few decades. Since the 1930s a staggering 97% of our once flower-rich meadows has been lost. Ploughing a New Furrow examines these stark figures and in the context of Brexit considers the unprecedented opportunity for wildlife once again to be nurtured by Britains farmers alongside food production, reversing the enormous plant and animal losses our farmland has suffered. With its financial largesse, the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) has encouraged farmers to destroy huge areas of wildlife habitat in Britains lowlands and seriously damage large tracts of our uplands, depleting Britains farmed land of much of its wildlife. With responsibility for farm policy to be transferred back to the UK, these enormous losses could be reversed and Britains farms made wildlife-rich once more. This book is based to a significant extent on conversations with farmers and on the achievements and experiences of some farmers who have made good use of agri-environment payments to reinstate lost habitats and manage their remaining wildlife more sensitively. The author sets out the case for removing or capping subsidies, supporting organic and other more sustainable forms of agriculture and the conservation of soils and the rich life forms they hold. He proposes a set of policy changes and other measures that should be adopted by the Government post-Brexit to make the 70% of our land that farming occupies rich in wildlife again. Literally food for thought! Autorid: Malcolm Smith | 0 | Vaata
Porto Press Ltd Kabul: Final Call: The inside story of the withdrawal from Afghanistan August 2021 GTIN: 9781849955812 Raamatud A powerful and truly shocking story of the fall of Kabul to the Taliban in August, 2021. It reveals the challenges, difficult decisions and conditions in Kabul during the horrific final days and the evacuation from Kabul airport. On 15 August 2021, the world watched in horror as Kabul fell to the Taliban, almost exactly 20 years after western-backed Afghan forces overthrew the Taliban government in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. During those 20 years the United States, the United Kingdom and their allies tried to build a modern democratic society in Afghanistan, alongside fighting a counter-insurgency war and eradicating al-Qaeda terrorism. The campaign cost the lives of 457 British soldiers, 2402 United States soldiers, and countless Afghan soldiers and civilians. For years Afghanistan was at the top of the UK's defence and foreign policy priorities. The UK spent tens of billions of pounds on the military campaign and on aid. The United States spent trillions of dollars. This book tells the shocking and troubling inside story of the last days of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. It offers a no-holds-barred insight into the looming collapse of Afghanistan as western military forces pulled out and catalogues the political intrigues among the Afghan elite and the indifference of western politicians for whom Afghanistan was a no-win quagmire. It describes the horror of the chaotic evacuation from Kabul. And it pays tribute to the quiet heroism of the British soldiers and civilians on the ground, who brought over 15,000 vulnerable Afghans to safety, against impossible odds, in under two weeks. Afghanistan is no longer top of the news. But the people of Afghanistan continue to pay the price of failure particularly Afghan women and girls. So too do the families of the soldiers Afghan as well as British and American who gave their lives, and those whose bodies and minds were broken by the war. This book offers an unblinking assessment of the causes, the meaning and the human cost of the disaster in Afghanistan. Autorid: Laurie Bristow | 0 | Vaata
Porto Press Ltd Beautiful Beasts, Beautiful Lands: The fall and rise of an African national park GTIN: 9781849955621 Raamatud When Lake Mburo National Park in Uganda was created in 1983, thousands lost their land and livelihoods. Three years later people reclaimed the land and set out to destroy the park and its wildlife. Reduced in size and settled throughout, the park seemed lost. This was the challenge faced by Mark Infield on arrival in Uganda as a young conservationist. A programme of recovery over a 10-year period proposed and implemented by the author and colleagues in Uganda National Parks used community conservation approaches, and today the park is saved and visited by thousands. With this project as its primary focus, Beautiful Beasts, Beautiful Lands looks back at Marks 30 years in conservation and asks the questions What really works? and Why? This is a personal account of the authors 30 years work in nature conservation, focused on the rise and fall and rise again of this national park. Despite this and other successes, and while lands under conservation increase, the natural world continues to wane. Local support is critical if national parks are to survive, and efforts over many years building links to communities must have more than a fleeting success as this book amply demonstrates. After five years explaining to Bahima pastoralists who named the land Karo Karungi the Beautiful Land why the national park was important, the author finally thought to ask for their views. Their answers changed his thinking about the park, about working with communities, and about how and why to protect nature. Beautiful Beasts, Beautiful Lands provides a commentary on nature conservation, casting light on its failures, and explaining why protected areas are stronger when based on local values than when based on financial worth. It puts forward a way of thinking that reaches out to ancient connections between people and nature, putting beauty and meaning firmly back at its centre. Autorid: Mark Infield | 0 | Vaata

Porto Press Ltd Ring Ouzel: A View from the North York Moors GTIN: 9781849954587 Raamatud Using vivid extracts from field notebooks and profusely illustrated with photographs as well as paintings and sketches by wildlife artist Jonathan Pomroy, the reader is transported to the beautiful North York Moors National Park. We can share in the excitement as the first Ring Ouzels of the year return from their winter quarters in North Africa, witness their courtship displays, the establishment of territories and the female ouzel painstakingly building her nest and laying eggs. This is followed by the monitoring of the hatching and fledging of chicks and the levels of predation noted in order better to understand the productivity and sustainability of this vulnerable and isolated population. To hear the song of the Ring Ouzel carrying for a surprising distance across the high moorland in the early morning is one of the many delights of upland Britain. The authors have recorded and analysed both simple and complex songs in their study area and, following comparison with recordings from Scotland, Derbyshire and the Yorkshire Dales, have confirmed the suspected presence of local dialects. Crucially this book is much more than a remarkable record of twenty years fieldwork as it builds on earlier research elsewhere and relates local findings to the results of other current studies in England, Wales and Scotland. The contraction in distribution and number of Ring Ouzels breeding in Britain, the work of the Ring Ouzel Study Group, the introduction of conservation measures and the potential impact of climate change are all described. Attention is drawn to the first indications of Ring Ouzel decline in Switzerland. As a migrant, the Ring Ouzel faces additional pressures and problems on passage and conditions in their wintering areas in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco are described. The importance of Britain as a stop-over and refuelling area for Fennoscandian birds on passage in Spring and Autumn is stressed. There is still much to learn and the early attempts to track Ring Ouzels on migration from Scotland to North Africa and back are described. This milestone publication brings the Ring Ouzel into sharp focus for the first time. Autorid: Vic Fairbrother, Ken Hutchinson | 0 | Vaata
Porto Press Ltd Dive Truk Lagoon, second edition: The Japanese WWII Pacific Shipwrecks 2nd edition GTIN: 9781849955416 Raamatud The 50-mile wide lagoon of Truk Atoll, far out in the remote expanses of the Pacific, is quite simply the greatest wreck diving location in the world. Scores of virtually intact Japanese WWII wrecks of transport ships, still filled with cargoes of tanks, trucks, artillery, beach mines, shells and aircraft, rest in the crystal-clear waters of the lagoon along with two Japanese destroyers and a submarine each now a man-made reef teeming with sea life. This book takes you there. The islands of Truk Atoll once housed a large airbase and were the main forward anchorage for the Imperial Japanese Navy. On 4 February 1944, a long-range U.S. reconnaissance flight revealed the lagoon to be full of ships. Sensing danger the Japanese Navy scattered. But the merchant ships remained, as crews rushed to offload their cargoes. Meanwhile, other heavily laden supply ships continued to arrive from Japan The attack came at dawn on 17 February 1944, precipitating one of the largest aerial dogfights of WW II. Eventually, air superiority over the islands was achieved and U.S bombers spent two days sinking all the large ships trapped in the lagoon. These sunken ships, with their war cargoes, were largely forgotten about until 1969, when Jacques Cousteau located and filmed many of the wrecks. The resulting TV documentary, Lagoon of Lost Ships, went viral. Truks secret was out and the beautiful wrecks, untouched since WWII, have proved an irresistible lure for thousands of divers each year since then. Autorid: Rod Macdonald | 0 | Vaata
Porto Press Ltd Horse Welfare: A Window on the Equine World GTIN: 9781849955485 Raamatud This book is a softback reprint of the popular hardback, Horse Welfare: Use not Abuse and is dedicated to the protection of horses, ponies and donkeys and is based on first-hand international experience from a lifetime spent with horses hunting, racing and welfare whether with The Pony Club, The Jockey Club or international horse charity. It covers all equines to the highest levels of performance racing, show jumping, eventing and endurance riding and encourages all owners to care for their animals. Horses are beautiful animals that can work with their owners to the best effect; it is only right that they should all be cared for with respect so that the partnership is equal, one of working together and free from abuse. Christopher also looks at the world of working horses, donkeys and mules in the developing world, where they are often the only means of transporting people and goods, provide the only power to work the land and are essential for their owners survival. He calls for them to be given closer attention and care and that training is given to the owners who may not be aware of how to care properly for their animals. He also writes about people in equestrian sports both nationally and internationally and the work of the major charity World Horse Welfare of which he was chairman, calling on his role as a leading regulator and lifelong horseman. He held one of the highest profile jobs in the Jockey Club, steward in charge of enforcing the rules of horse racing and provides an insight into the high stakes world of racing where winning is everything. But whatever the activity or level, readers will be aware that horses are the real stars. Autorid: Christopher Hall, Roly Owers | 0 | Vaata
