2020 Burkitt Medal for Biblical Studies When reading the book of Romans, we often focus on the quotable passages, making brief stopovers and not staying long enough to grasp some of the big ideas it contains. Instead of raiding Paul's most famous letter for a passage here or a theme there, leading New Testament scholar Beverly Roberts Gaventa invites us to linger in Romans. She asks that we stay with the letter long enough to see how Romans reframes our tidy categories and dramatically enlarges our sense of the gospel. Containing profound insights written in accessible prose and illuminating references to contemporary culture, this engaging book explores the cosmic dimensions of the gospel that we read about in Paul's letter. Gaventa focuses on four key issues in Romans--salvation, identity, ethics, and community--that are crucial both for the first century and for our own. As she helps us navigate the book of Romans, she shows that the gospel is far larger, wilder, and more unsettling than we generally imagine it to be. Autorid: Beverly Roberts Gaventa

The full source code for the examples provided in this book aims to encourage innovation and experimentation by a readership that will gain much from the first publication of its kind based on F#. It also covers design and other aspects of Java and C#. This book uses a functional programming language (F#) as a metalanguage to present all concepts and examples, and thus has an operational flavour, enabling practical experiments and exercises. It includes basic concepts such as abstract syntax, interpretation, stack machines, compilation, type checking, garbage collection, and real machine code. Also included are more advanced topics on polymorphic types, type inference using unification, co- and contravariant types, continuations, and backwards code generation with on-the-fly peephole optimization. This second edition includes two new chapters. One describes compilation and type checking of a full functional language, tying together the previous chapters. The other describes how to compile a C subset to real (x86) hardware, as a smooth extension of the previously presented compilers. The examples present several interpreters and compilers for toy languages, including compilers for a small but usable subset of C, abstract machines, a garbage collector, and ML-style polymorphic type inference. Each chapter has exercises. Programming Language Concepts covers practical construction of lexers and parsers, but not regular expressions, automata and grammars, which are well covered already. It discusses the design and technology of Java and C# to strengthen students understanding of these widely used languages. Autorid: Peter Sestoft

Ootamatu küll, kuid meie dþässmuusika on Eesti riigi eakaaslane. Autorid: Mihhail Stalnuhhin
Pole just lõbus, kui sind ajab taga krokodill. Ometi pakkus see päev neile tohutult palju seiklusi, mille peale meie sõbrakesed on alati eriti maiad. Pealegi õnnestus neil üles leida oma tuttav karupoeg. Sellest, kuidas mõmmik loomaaeda sattus ja kuidas tal sealt pageda õnnestus, unistajast papagoist, ülemäära erudeeritud Somaali eeslikesest, maiasmokk-kaamelist, väga kaunist, kuid äärmiselt rumalast paabulinnust ning paljudest teistest loomaaia asukatest, kellega kutsikas ja kassike oma peremeest otsides kokku puutusid, jutustabki teile see raamat.Pildid on raamatutesse joonistanud Anna Ring. This five-views work brings together an all-star lineup of Pauline scholars to offer a constructive, interdenominational, up-to-date conversation on key issues of Pauline theology. Dunn, Brant Pitre, and Magnus Zetterholm then discuss how to interpret Paul's writings and theology, especially the apostle's view of salvation. This small, gorgeously designed and carefully edited bookavailable in grey and beige clothpresents all 20 photographs of a new body of work that Cindy Sherman completed in 2016. In these photographs, reminiscent (conceptually but not formally) of her earlier Film Stills, Sherman enacts variations on the theme of aging Hollywood actresses of the 1920s.The series was inspired by her interest in early German Expressionist silent movies, which led her to further studies of the first wave of the Hollywood star system in the 1920s.Here, Shermans "actresses" are presented in the style of studio publicity shoots, against backgrounds that were carefully composed for each of the characters. With heavy make-up, elaborate hairdos, precisely chosen and arranged wardrobe and dresses, Sherman creates female characters that provoke a rich array of cultural associations. This prosaic address hides an icon of modern architecture, the Neue Nationalgalerie Berlin. Built between 1962 and 1968, it is the only structure Mies van der Rohe built in Europe aft er the Second World War. Despite the radically minimal fl oor plans, it is a complex spatial continuum realised with what only appears to be a simple set of tools. Mies van der Rohes staging is designed to fluidly shape and defi ne the transitions between city and museum, public and non-public, interior and exterior, subject and object. As a trained architect who has been photographing architecture for decades, Ulrich Schwarz looks for ways to translate space into sequences of images. To this end, he uses precise axial camera shift s to trace movements in space, image by image. When looking at the sequences in the book, each photograph is overwritt en by the following variation; the motifs build on each other and eliminate each other at the same time. This strictly conceptual book questions our viewing habits and spatial experiences in a fascinating way. Autorid: Ulf Erdmann Ziegler, Ulrich Schwarz

Every literary household in nineteenth-century Britain had a commonplace book, scrapbook, or album. Coleridge called his collection "Fly-Catchers", while George Eliot referred to one of her commonplace books as a "Quarry," and Michael Faraday kept quotations in his "Philosophical Miscellany."Nevertheless, the nineteenth-century commonplace book, along with associated traditions like the scrapbook and album, remain under-studied. This book tells the story of how technological and social changes altered methods for gathering, storing, and organizing information in nineteenth-centuryBritain. As the commonplace book moved out of the schoolroom and into the home, it took on elements of the friendship album. At the same time, the explosion of print allowed readers to cheaply cut-and-paste extractions rather than copying out quotations by hand. Built on the evidence of over 300manuscripts, this volume unearths the composition practices of well-known writers such as Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Sir Walter Scott, George Eliot, and Alfred Lord Tennyson, and their less well-known contemporaries. Divided into two sections, the first half of the book contends that methods fororganizing knowledge developed in line with the period's dominant epistemic frameworks, while the second half argues that commonplace books helped Romantics and Victorians organize people.Chapters focus on prominent organizational methods in nineteenth-century commonplacing, often attached to an associated epistemic virtue: diaristic forms and the imagination (Chapter Two); "real time" entries signalling objectivity (Chapter Three); antiquarian remnants, serving as empirical evidencefor historical arguments (Chapter Four); communally produced commonplace books that attest to socially constructed knowledge (Chapter Five); and blank spaces in commonplace books of mourning (Chapter Six). Richly illustrated, this book brings an archive of commonplace books, scrapbooks, and albumsto the reader. Autorid: Jillian M. Hess

Peace is not given. It is claimed by those willing to stand in the crucible on behalf of those who are unable or unwilling to act. In a world desperate for peace at any cost, the hard truth is that peace is often paid for in blood. When Violence Is Virtue is a concise book, meant to hit hard. Every page is packed with ideas to dwell on. It isn't about glorifying war or violence; it explores the fragile divide between strength and mercy, peace and peril, courage and restraint. Drawn from the realities of war, and moments that strip away all illusion, Adam McLain reveals that true virtue sometimes demands a steady readiness to meet violence with resolve.Endorsements"Every active duty guy should read this book. It should be part of their mandatory reading list. I highly recommend it. It was phenomenal." - David Rutherford (Navy SEAL, CIA Contractor, Author, Performance Coach, and Award Winning Podcast Host)"A short but nutrient-dense book, written by a man that knows war. absolutely fantastic, I cannot recommend it enough." - Clay Martin (Green Beret, Marine & Author)
